View Full Version : Forum Specific Administrators

Hi,

I've done a little playing around with the new vB 3.0.7 and I've noticed that there are features for lesser admins, but not quite to the extent that I would like--maybe I overlooked the feature?

My situation
I'm developing a music site. I would like artists who sign up on my site to be able to have "sub-forums" under my forum. They would be hidden from my index.php and only be accessible by url. Then, when you click to these sub-forums they act and look like a regular index.php and don't show any signs of being a child forum.

What I would like
I would like to be able to designate administrators per a specific forum. So that (ex) Britney Spears could administrate over her specific forum and child forums and not the parent forums (my forums).

The advantage to the artists is sharing a single member-base. (This is a local bands website :P)

Anyways, these forum specific administrators don't need to do much... but they need to be able to:

- Not see any information regarding parent forums
- Use Forum Tools (Add/Edit/Etc)
- Threads/posts Tools
- Edit their specific style

optional:
- Statistics regarding their specific forum.

I'm an intermediate PHP programmer and I could probably get this done by myself, though I really don't have the time to spend doing it.

I don't know if I'm only allowed to say this or make an offer, but I will offer $$ for anyone who is willing to develop this in a timely manner.

Feel free to ask questions if you don't understand, I'm not the best explainer.

Thanks for reading,

Corey

This MAY be a violation of your vbulletin license. According to the terms of your license, you can't lease out forums so that it acts sort of like ezboard.

You CAN give users their own forum. But, it's with limitations. I suggest you check with Jelsoft to see exactly what those limitations are.

That would really be a shame if this idea is in violation of the vBulletin license because I think it's a really nice feature.

If it is then I'll come up with another solution...

But really all I want to do here is create sub-forums with forum specific administrators. I don't see why that would be a violation... because all I'm essentially doing is giving select members of my community a special place to look over much like a moderator.

The purpose of this isn't to have COMPLETELY different forums with SEPARATE (ex) "General Discussion" boards, no -- not at all. But sub forums for each artist for like "Ask the Band" or "News & Events" etc. I'm not looking to REPLACE another potential vBulletin license.

Can somebody from the vB Staff check on this?

staff may not read this thread. You should contact them via email. The part that I think is going to get you in hot water is as follows:
1. Not seeing the parent forum.
2. The ability to change the style.
3. Giving users more than one forum.

hasnt all this been covered already with the vbhosting hack? https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=62849&page=1&pp=15
i think since it was never put back up that it was determined that it is in violation of the Jelsoft liscence

I think the first one MAY be an issue, but #2 most certainly wouldn't be.

And there's not more than one forum. What he's basically attempting to do is allow the child forums to act as the parent as far as a "view" is concerned.

Edit -- I was unaware of that little discussion from the link posted above. Pity there wasn't a general announcement regarding that issue.

Yes Biker, he said So that (ex) Britney Spears could administrate over her specific forum and child forums

So, he does intend to let Britney have more than one forum, at least as he described it.

Well how about giving Moderators access to Adding/Editing child forums under their respective forums? That's really the main thing here. As far as styles, I can edit them myself.

What's wrong with the multiple child forums?

And as long as I link back to my main forum there should be no problem.

These are questions you really need to ask Jelsoft. We aren't the ones who would invalidate your license. They are. ;)
