This modification is no longer available or supported.

Here is a 3.5 version of the ever popular "miserable users" hack. Basically a way to really annoy anyone you don't want visiting your forum. Based on the original idea & hack for vb2 by Zzed, and the vb3 port by KuraFire.

When classed as miserable, a member suffers ;

1. Slow response (time delay) on every page (20 to 60 seconds default).
2. A chance they will get the "server busy" message (50% by default).
3. A chance that no search facilities will be available (75% by default).
4. A chance they will get redirected to another preset page (25% & homepage by default).
5. A chance they will simply get a blank page (25% by default).
6. Post flood limit increased by a defined factor (10 times by default).
7. If they get past all this okay, then they will be served up their proper page.

Note: All the above options are set in the vBulletin Options.

To install this hack simply download the xml file to your pc and then import it into vbulletin as a product - then create your 'miserable users' usergroup and set the value of this group, and your preferred other settings, in the hacks settings area (vBulletin Oprions > Miserable Users). To make a member suffer just edit their profile to add them to the miserable users group (it will work as either the primary group or as a secondary group).

History:

v2.01 - Released as a product - all settings are in the vB options.
v2.02 - Added option for multiple usergroups to be defined as miserable.
v2.03 - Added option for IP addresses to be defined as miserable.
v2.04 - Updated multiple usergroups code.
v2.05 : Minor changes, no update necessary.

I forgot to mention that this also increases the post flood limit by five times, so if you normally limit members to one post per 30 seconds then it will be once every 2.5 minutes (assuming they have the patience to get past everything else).

This has got to be the single best concept EVER. I have a user who has been banned at least 50 times, but keeps returning. We let him stay til other members get tired of abusing him, then ban him again. This will be SO MUCH FUN.

It would be nice if there was an Admin button on posts to automatically throw them in that group :)

I'm waiting on the full release of vb3.5 before I get it, but I'm sure this will be one of the first things I add in the new plugin section when I do. Fortunately for me, the members that I've had problems with don't know what that "Tachy" feature is or does, so they generally have no idea why no one cares what they have to say. This would be a great addition to that, as it would discourage them from coming back.

I wonder how hard it would be to identify repeat members quickly that just fire up a new proxy and register a new account... that's the problem I'm having right now.

Great plugin... I must say... hours and hours of fun.

The only option that would be nice is if it had a interface like the banning system has. So it would be accessable via the Moderator Control Panel along with the Admin control panel.

Basicly, it would be nice to allow them to be able to added and remove Miserable Users just like banned users. Also allowing time limits just like the banning system would be a nice option.

Anyway, LOVE THE PLUGIN. Thanx Nutter

Version 2 Release.

This is now released as a product with no editing of the plugin required, all settings are in the vB options.

See the first post (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=93258) for full details.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To update from version 1.50 ;

1. Delete the current plugin (in the ACP plugin manager).

2. Import the new product and edit the settings to suit.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: There is no requirement to upgrade if you are happy with the v1.50 plugin as is - however, I will only support problems with the current version. :)

I've been using various versions of this since vB2. Anyway, for some reason, trying to login as a miserable user results in the following error;

<!--
Database error in vBulletin 3.5.0 Release Candidate 3:

Invalid SQL:

SELECT text, languageid
FROM phrase
WHERE phrasetypeid = 1000
AND varname = 'toobusy' AND languageid IN (-1, 0, 1);

MySQL Error : Lost connection to MySQL server during query
Error Number : 2013
Date : Thursday, September 22nd 2005 @ 08:55:37 AM
(etc)
-->

I have tested this with all other plugins/products disabled and the board I'm testing this on has no edited source files.

This is something that only happened since I upgraded to vB 3.5.

Paul M
09-22-2005, 06:16 PM
<i>Lost connection to MySQL server during query</i> ? - that's a mysql connection failure.

Probably worth checking that you do have the "toobusy" phrase (it's a default vb phrase).

Maybe if the code can be modified to accept more than 1 user group ID's...Not if you want different settings for each group, you would have to completely rewrite it, and also create a second set of settings in the ACP.

Trevor Hannant

Also, I can't see any "Miserable User" options in vBulletin Options :(

Got the same problem. Added it as a product, created a new usergroup but can't see any options to have that one set as the 'miserable' one.

Does the new group have to be given a specific name at all?

Paul M
09-25-2005, 11:28 PM
Nope, the product import process should create the "Miserable Users" settings, it has no reliance on any group names. I can't think of any reason why it would not do this as the options are defined in the product, it's part of the standard functionality of the product import. Perhaps try rebuilding your languages ?

Can this be done for a particular IP address instead of User Name?
I have an annoying member on my board who registered a new member name, but is smart enough not to post from the same location with both accounts. By day he/she uses the regular screen name from school or work, by night he/she uses the new account from home. I'd like to force him/her into posting from one location so I find out just who's the culprit.

doen't that just add them to everyone's ignore list? Thats not what i'm trying to acomplish. I want the user to suffer when posting from a particular IP address, possibly forcing them to try & login with their other account.

Maybe if the code can be modified to accept more than 1 user group ID's...Paul M, can we add multiple usergroup ID to the Miserable Users input field seperated by a space or comma?
Ex: 2, 13, 7
A few people seem to she interest in this. The thing is, i have 3 user groups (New, Adv, Vet) & each group has a different color display. if I throw people from various user groups into the Miserable group, they are going notice that their user color changed.

I also tried using a space & got the same result, so I asume the plugin code would have to be modified.

That would be truncated by sql itself, not by vbulletin.

What's happening is you're trying to insert a string into a field that is meant for an integer. The sql parsing engine will accept the 1 and the 3 but as soon as it gets to the coma, it says "Whoops!" and tosses the rest out.

The only real solution to what you're trying to do methinks is to use a secondary usergroup.

After this alter your preferred settings in the vBulletin Oprions [Miserable Users] settings. I have searched through the vBulletin Oprions over and over and Miserable Users is not there. I also made my test user miserable and it had no effect.
The options for the Miserable Users in the Usergroup manager are the same as all the other usergroups, ie - no new options pretaining to this mod.

My srever is Win2003 could that be a problem?

When made a member of the miserable users group, a member suffers ;

Um... we just installed this on 3.5 gold and nothing seems to be happening :( This is a brand new 3.5 install, with no other hacks. Using default vB skin. It installed fine, and we tried both primary and secondary user groups, even raised the settings (above) to 75%, but nothing is happening to the user.

Can someone please clue us in on what might be wrong?

Do you mean in ACP>Options>Plugin/Hook System>Enable Plugin/Hook System? It is set to ?yes?. I could PM you the URL with a pre-setup ?miserable user? name/password if you want to test it for yourself?

I think I traced it down to a bad Usergroup ID number. It was set at 14 by default, and it should have been 9. Seems to be working now so we'll make a nice "Server Load Exceeded" page for them to be redirected to. We'll even put a donation button on it for them :nervous: We used to dread trolls, now we use them as toys :)

Thanks Paul for all the hard work that you've put into this.

You need to learn a bit of patience, I do not camp in these forums reading posts every five minutes, there is no need to post a question and then "bump" it 7 minutes later, thats just going to annoy me.

I'm having similar problems. I upgraded from 3.0.8 to 3.5, turned on plugins, installed the plugin' as a product, and created my usergroup, but I get notta. It just acts like a regular user group.

what do you mean "setting a group in the settings"? I created the User Group, I wouold assume there should be some way to associate the settings for the Miserable Users with the group, but didn't see a way to do that, nor did it say a way to do so in the instructions. I am however a fairly new user of Vbulletin, so It could be something that other users would consider an implied step not sure.

Thank you for porting this to 3.5. This is my second favorite hack of all time, behind Ted S's (http://www.theadminzone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3560), but if I could only have one on my board it would be this one. I increased the pain to 3.0 level. :p

Will the following work for IP addresses and user agents?

if (is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo, $vbulletin->options['muparm9'])||$_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']=='192.168.0.1'||$_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']=='Some anonymizer')

Thanks.

very very true. I have three members with multiple nicks, even though it is against the rules. I let it slide because 1) they are funny and 2) they don't let people catch on.

This is my favorite mod. I've got a genuine troll-stalker who's been flooding my forum with fake identities, attacking members and all kinds of stalking trolling goodness for more than 3 years. With MU, I can reciprocate the annoyances.

Our moderator's group uses this hack like a verb in sentences, "hey, so and so made a new account. Should I mizz it? Yes! Mizz the $%#!@%#$@. User is now mizzed."

Of course, once an account of his/hers is mizzed, we get the joy of then clicking delete in our inbox from the flood of email containing thinks like, "nya nya, your board is down. You see, you really are inferior to me and my web proxy and blah blah blah blah blah". Which isn't much different from the daily email recieved containing the hillarities of, "you'll never keep me out blah blah blah I know more than you blah blah blah I will sue you for defammation blah blah blah here's a photo of me with my sister blah blah blah you think you're so smart don't you blah blah blah I just read a post, isn't so and so and so and so stupid? Bet you didn't know I could still access the forum? That's how smart I am and how dumb you are blah blah blah".

3 years, going on 4 of this daily fun. Amazing what people will throw away their lives doing.

Put your forum into debug mode, then goto the Miserable User settings and choose to edit the "Usergroup id" setting. Change the validation from 'numeric' to 'free' and save. Take your forum out of debug mode. You should now be able to enter a comma seperated set of usergroup numbers which *may* work. I have not tested this.

True. It might. But there is a certain principle here. We have a group of Admins and we have agreed to vote on installations, modifications and anything else major for the site. This was installed by one Admin with no discussion. So most of the others have agreed it should be removed.

The version we have is Miserable Users 2.01. So, if this is a simple one click uninstall and removing it won't cause the board to have any problems, then that's what the majority have agreed should be done.

I tried that, and it didn't work. However keeping the member a member of their current group and making them a member of the targeted (secondary) group did.

Thanks for your help..

Installed. lol.

That's how we do it as well.

I been testing this and I keep getting a similar reaction. The page will just hang and never go anywhere. Granted this is one of the things it will do but that is all it ever does. These are with default settings and tweaked. Never does a redirection no matter what percentage I set it to.

This is an AWESOME hack! Thank you!

I have only one small issue. One of my "miserable users" just happens to be a Super Moderator. When SM's click to edit a profile, or their own, they can see the list of primary and secondary usergroups in profiles. Therefore, I gave the new usergroup a non-descript name so as not to arouse any suspicions from the other mods. Is there a way to "hide" that usergroup from being in a users profile options? Or is there a way to make them a miserable user without them or other mods being able to see that they are in a secondary usergroup? Otherwise, this has been a BARREL OF LAUGHS!! :devious:

You cannot hide the usergroup - and TBH I would seriously question why someone you want to make miserable is a Super-Moderator ?? BTW, if you require support, please click "install".

The list of reasons is long and distinguished... it's just a little retribution for many things this person has done, and the many knives sticking out of my back. Actually, it's only used as a "mute" button for them. :ninja:

Oh, and <clicks install> :devious:

Your could add his ip to the miserable ip list.

Well this they are on their way out of the position and the board... it's just a matter of time. But this will make the time pass with a little more satisfaction. :devious:

I would love to see a log page of exactly what a miserable user suffered. :D

OK, I'd like this and am going to ask a stupid noobie question. When I attempt to install I get this message (can't find a topic on it here using search.):

XML Error: xml declaration not at start of external entity at Line 1

What is this telling me? Should I try putting it on the server first and then upload it via the product manager, rather than uploading directly from my machine?

Paul M

Are you sure you are trying to upload it as a product, not a plugin ?

Also, how did you save it on your pc ?

Rakehel

Thank you for the insight Paul. I had saved it incorrectly. It is now installed and ready to go! :)

I love this Hack !

If I may, a little suggestion :

Some users are very vicious and change their login easily, erasing cookies and having changing IP at every new connexion. We have to make them "miserable" at each new account.
I assume it is possible to target specific users more precisely on basis of recognizing OS, graphic resolution and some other criteria which limit error possibilities.
Do you think it would be a good idea (and not too complicated) to implement it on your (already so good) plugin ?

Paul M
01-22-2006, 03:02 PM
Sorry, but there are no plans to expand this beyond the current user and IP options. :)

Todi
01-23-2006, 05:12 AM
Ban their ip-ranges instead? You can't really use OS/Resolultion/etc to identify anyone, i can guarantee you will get many, many false positives. Your users won't like it.

Just for my knowledge.

Does the % for redirect, blank and server busy have to equal 100% ?? If not, what is the effect.??

Thanks.

Does the % for redirect, blank and server busy have to equal 100% ?? If not, what is the effect.??No, you use what ever value you want. Each feature is independant, so one can be 5%, another 10% and another 0% if you want.
