View Full Version : Switching my forum to vB, needs help with style sheets etc.

Hi, I'm planning on buying a vB license and switching my forum (see signature) from UBB.threads to vBulletin when v.3.5 (or maybe 3.5.1) is released. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with vB as an admin (other that I have played around a little with the admin demo at vBulletin.com).
I'll do the basic software install myself, and Jerry from vB will do the import from threads, but then I'll need someone to convert the css custom style sheet (Jerry recommended I visit here about the stylesheet conversion etc.). How would be the best way of finding (and paying) a professional to help with that here? (I think I would need someone with top skills and a good reputation/reference)
This communiy is all new to me, but I intend to hang around and get to know you. I still haven't made the final decision if I end up going with vB after UBB, but right now I'm leaning heavily towards it.
Any advice on how to go about this, for my forums, important switch (not only the style sheet convertion) is very appreciated
:)

First of all welcome to vbulletin.org Magle.
Once you have bought your vB license and updated your license information, you will be able to post in the Service Request asking for a payed designer. Alternative would be to post in the Modefication Request forum for a volunteer job, or have a look at the free available Styles.

Thanks Marco,
I'll probably end up posting in the service request forum. My stylesheet is quite unique and has been custom designed, so geeting a free style instead would be out of the question :)

Yes, although free Styles are available, the downside would be that your site would be far from unique.

The best way to learn VB is to start installing a few hacks (that's how i learnt it ;)).

Thanks, That's good advice MyIS_Jordan.
And thinking about it, that's the way I really learned UBB.threads myself, by installing hacks. I must admit it somehow annoys me that I have to start all over again learning, but I hope my experience from UBB (with basic php editing) will at least make the learning curve faster and less steep...
My plan is to install vB on my server but keep UBB running and only import/switch the users over when I have gotten acustomed to the new software (e.g. by installing hacks)

I suggest that you setup a test board (your license will allow you to run 1 non-public test-board) for trying out hacks first.

Well, I decided to jump right into it. I'm now the happy owner of one vBulletin (owned) License. As soon as I receieve the license info on mail I will download and install the latest 3.5 release (RC1) as a test forum to play around with. Then when 3.5 or 3.5.1 final is released I will make a new install and import members from my UBB.threads database, etc...
phew, can't believe I really did it! ;)

Magle,
Congratualtions on your purchase.
At this time the latest downloadable version is Beta 4, but RC1 will follow soon.

You will need to use your customer number and password (which will be in the email you got when you paid for your license) to access that page. Please note that your email is case sensitive. The update of your account may take up to one hour.
Thank you.

Done, thanks :)
I'll just go ahead and install beta4, since I'm only going to run the first install as a test board, then I can also try out how to update (from b4 to rc1)

Sounds like a great plan :D

Thanks. So far it's going well - the test board is already up and running after 30 minutes install (including me troubleshooting and fixing some bad cookie settings by uploading tools.php and resetting cookie path) and I've made the first succesful test post on my new vBulletin board. I'm very excited about this! :)
