Hmm, maybe a feature to change the url based on the url they type in.

Like for

freeipods.com/?r=spammersreferrerid

freeipods.com/?r=admin'sreferrerid

But, this looks nice, very glad it's a plugin, will try later. ;)

I have been plagued with this recently so just blocked ip's but this could effect others. Will this work on vb 3.5.0 rc1?

'luvly' installing now, great hack. Every day placing 'Win a free i-pod' ads all over. Do people get paid just to do that because I had about 20 of them?

sorry, numb, didn't do admin/installspamscan.php

Michael Morris

The options are supposed to show up in vboptions since once set they shouldn't need to much tinkering, so why clog up the navpanel with another group :)

Anyway, let me know if there's any problem. I'm going to try to move this thing to using the products system introduced in RC1, but it that change won't affect any existing installations.

For those with this on their to do list, I'm going to work on the next beta of this using the RC1 products system and I expect I'll get done today - so hold off if you was planning on an install today.

will it be just a simple overwrite for those with the other one installed?

Michael Morris

If you've already got it installed then yes, it's just a simple overwrite. The settings have more elaborate and detailed descriptions as to what they do, and one bug will be fixed, that's it.

Weird. I figured when the product manager said overwrite it meant overwrite. Hmm.. Not many folk are registered as having installed the first beta - so I'm not sure writing an uninstaller is justified, especially since the settings can be dropped using phpmysql

If anyone needs any help transferring over let me know.

Weird. I figured when the product manager said overwrite it meant overwrite.
It will only overwrite things that are placed by the same product. Since the beta's are not installed as a product, they have productid empty, hence not the same and they will not be overwritten.

Makes sense. Well, should I go to the trouble then of getting the uninstaller to work or what?

VERY Nice! I have been having issues like this for months, every once and a while someone will sign up and make two posts, both short, simple spam posts like "Win a free iPod!". Myself and my mods are getting annoyed as it is difficult to ban these people, always using different IP's / emails / nicks.

Michael Morris
08-06-2005, 09:42 PM
Ok folks, it's been out a few days now - any ideas for improvements?

These are the ones I'm considering.

- If a spammer gets past the system give the mods the ability to use the inline moderation tools to add spam to the local blacklist.

- Get with Jay Allen and figure out how to get the module to communicate it's findings back to the mt-blacklist main site. This could be tricky since MT-Blacklist itself is written in Perl.

- Maybe implement a harvester that will watch coventried spammers and see if they try to use domains not in the blacklist.

Any other ideas?

RC2 added - this update allows users to store the blacklist in the template engine instead of leaving it in an external textfile. It also removes the need to use FTP during the install, though that option is still viable as well.

Yes, but unless you're intending to move your spam list into a template you don't need to upgrade.

When a message get's posted in the mods forum about an attack, it keeps saying a guest user and not their id for some reason. I don't allow guests to posts, what could I have done wrong?

I would think so. Even if you disable url tags they can spam the board and post the link - disabling url tags for them just means they won't parse the link - but it will still be there.

Michael Morris

Yes. You can enter words and domains on the local blacklist and use it in addition to the main blacklist -- you can also leave the blacklist pointer empty in which case only the local blacklist will be used.

Did you get an email notification? If so that's the section of the code I haven't been able to test as well as I like. Being unable to see the post in question is normal if the system coventried them since even admins don't see coventry posts by default in vb 3.5. That's one of the reasons why I had it set up to copy the body of the post to the post in the mod forum and make that post as a "guest" post to prevent tachying.

It's been awhile since I've looked at this code, is it copying the body of the post to the email? If not I need to add this feature.

This was working fine on the other versions, but now that we upgraded to Gold we are getting this error:

Warning: file_get_contents(/forum/includes/blacklist.txt): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /includes/functions_newpost.php(333) : eval()'d code on line 50

Hopefully they can upgrade it to gold soon. It's a great hack :)

OK we fixed it. Somehow a file was deleted when we upgraded to 3.5.0 :ermm: So maybe it does work on Gold...

Sounds good, but will this help me with my problem.

I'm getting a lot of emails with the following subject:

Where the X's are the title of one of the threads at my forum.

Body contains:

Is there a fix for this as well ?

PS: dont check out that url, it suck!

Have installed on 3.5.3 and works fine. Only problem is finding the original post. At the moment I'm waiting to rebuild the search indexes as the database is huge (many millions of posts) and with 50+ forums it's a pain trying to find the original. Once search is fully indexed shouldn't be a problem though. Just would be much quicker if there was a link back to the original post.

Oh great... that's what I get for not doing the full research before installing a plugin - lol (grrrrr)

got it installed - looks great - except when you go to get an updated copy of the blacklist that this plugin is based on - you realize that the MT BLACKLIST project has been abandoned since last winter....

There are no active BLACKLIST's to download.

So unless there's a new backend for this plugin to reference, it's like installing an anti-virus program without the updated def files.

I have a spammer join and post on my forum nearly every day. This is just what I was looking for.

Came onto vbulletin, did a search for a spam blocker and found this.

Thumbs up Michael Morris. Installing now.

I hate it when porn sites try to advertise on my forum, it is a definate no no. My forum is www.dogeplanet, not exactly a site you want porn on. Not to mention the advertisers for prescription drugs etc. Blehhh, a daily job just watching the new members.
