View Full Version : NFL Football Pool

Here's what I want is a simple football pool add-on.

For a user to participate, they have be a member of a secondary group, "Pool Players" which can either be free or a paid subscription, depending on the site.

On the admin side, I have to be able to specify a 17-week, 16-game schedule for each season, keeping history from prior seasons. The entire season should be exportable/importable, complete with point spreads and scores.

Obviously, we need a way to input point spreads before a game and scores afterwards. If the programmer can find a way to extract this information from web sources automatically, thats a bonus, but it would be acceptable to do this manually.

I'd like two email options, one to invite all forum users to register for the football pool before the season ends. Another would be a weekly email to all pool members when the week's point spreads are all in so they can register their picks.

Users should be able to submit/change their picks up until midnight of the day following the first game. Closing the weekly pool should be automatic.

I'd like for each player to select ONE game as their "sure thing". This will be the first tie breaker.

For Monday Night Football, each player specifies an over/under representing the predicted combined score. This is the second tie breaker.

The third tie breaker is a coin-flip. In the event of a multi-player tie that goes to a coint flip, players will be seeded based on their season standing. If two or more players have the same standing for season, then alphabetically by username.

Once the seeding is determined, the two losest seeds engage in the coil flip and so on until the final rankings are determined.

To avoid this, there should also be a configuration option to allow ties.

I would like to be able to specify a forum where weekly announcements are inserted. Each week, a post will be made when the picksheet page is read (ie. all of the point spreads are in) and another when all the scores are in annoucing the weekly winner as well as the current season leader.

Ideally, the format of these posts whould be editable via the ACP.

We also will need a way to enter in playoff information and continue the season up to the Superbowl.

For those that want to actually make money off of their football pool, here are a few more ideas.

1. Pool Players group can be a weekly subscription.

2. Specify a split, for example 20/55/25; meaning 20% goes to the forums for hosting the pool; 55% is paid out to the weekly winner and 25% is added to the pot for the overall winner for the season.

3. Specify positions and percentages to pay out:
1st - 50%
2nd - 25 %
3rd - 15%
4th - 10 %

4. Allow uses to specify paypal info and payout automatically.

I leave the rest to your creativity.

The creative programmer will figure out not only can he make money selling the program, but also on yearly subscription for not just updates but for the data sources: schedules, scores, point spreads, playoff schedules.

Let me add that I'm willing to pay to have this done. PM me if interested.

I'd definitely be interested in something like this, and I'd be willing to add some $$ to the pot to have it done too.

Not bad. I've been looking for something similar but not as complicated. For years my family has the "NFL Picks". basically we all pick the winners. wekkly totals are added up, and at the end of the season, the winner gets their name engraved on the trophy and has it on their mantle for a year. The loser gets to host the superbowl party. :) Its been tons of fun. We use to come voer to my dads house and write in our picks on the clipboard. Now we email them in. If I could have something that could just tally correct totals, by user, and show wekkly and overall standings, that would be incredible.

email mike at sportsrant.com, or go to www.sportsrant.com to check it out. This is exactly what you're looking for. I have it on my sports related site, but am not currently using it.

VBpool is what you are looking for. I have it for my site. It could use some customization, but it's the perfect program, basically just like a yahoo style u pick 'em , by spread or s/u.

If anyone wants to pay to have truely "private" pools, and a paypal subs thing added in, I would be more than happy to pitch in on that.

Have you installed 3.5 on your site? Does it still work?

yeah, I have it installed on my site. But my site merged with another site not too long after I started it, so I'm about to take it down.

It works just fine. All the NFL logos are already plugged in as well.

The only thing it lacks is the ability to create "private" pools that only the people involved in that pool can see.

Right now it's just one group, and once you're in that group, you have access to all the pools.

Currently It does support private pools.
I am working on a newer version with a few nice enhancements/features.

please let me know when any updates are done.

I would really like to have an "updated" version.

The version I have supported private pools, but I thought anyone with access to the private pools could see ALL of the private pools, rather than just the ONE or X number of pools that they had access to, say per user group.

please let us know what updates are coming!

* Email users who have not done their picks prior to the deadline (cron job)
* Various bug fixes

I own the copyrights to this addition and I forbid it to be released to the vbulletin community, it's a special add on that I do not want anyone else to have

Sorry to say this

Just joking

:nervous:

as soon as it is ready for release, at least for VB3.0.*, Dark_Wizard will let you know here. If anyone wants this then contact either myself or Dark_Wizard

He will also be porting one for VB 3.5 but we have not discussed the release of this

Mike

Awesome!!! Hopefully you guys release a 3.5 version.

Very awesome of ya Mike, I'd definately put links in key locations to your site as props for this hack. :)

* Cyricx crosses his fingers for a 3.5 release

I thought the next release would be 3.5 compatible. We've been discussing this release in a VB3.5 forum. If not, then it has misled other developers who might have addressed this need.

I am moving as fast as possible on the vbulletin 3.5.x version of vbpool. The vbulletin 3.0.x version of vBPool is now ready for download on vbwar.com.
