Hello,

I am requestiong a story submissions mod that allows people to post their stories into categories.

The only site that I know off the top of my head with this is: http://literotica.com/stories/index.php

They have all kinds of categories, even a one for most recent stories and the most popular!

Since it's very hard to navigate, here is their submissions page:
http://www.literotica.com/storyxs/writ_stor.shtml

thanks :)

Also please notice that links to adult sites are not allowed by our rules. The link you posted is a borderline case i would say, that is why i left it for now. But please don't post any links to adult sites anymore.

Okay, thanks Marco.

Yea, I didn't know if it would be considered or not. It was also the only example I could find. And yes, Dream, that site it God awful looking. ;)

As per your question, "would people reply to this story?" Yes, users can leave comments. :)

I forgot to add, Dream, that comments would be text only. :)

Try contacting Mitnik from JustErotica (StolenDream at LitErotica) they had a story submission bit at that site too he might be able to help you out.

I'd LOVE to see a mod like this myself, it'd be pretty useful since most of my members are of the writing kind. :D

If you want to offer cash, you can post a Service Request in the relevant forum :)

On a topic-related note, it looks interesting - Certainly appears do-able - If I'm free I'll code it, but not sure of what monday/tuesday holds for me as far as work :)

Generaly, how long does it take to make something like this?

Generaly, how long does it take to make something like this?

Off the top of my head, probably a day of coding and templateing and then maybe a few hours of bug testing and correcting of things I don't like about the way it functions...

It all depends on how thorough the coder is and how clean they like their code - If they're a slap-together and throw at you kind of coder probably about half the time it would take me, maybe less - If they're like me and like their code to be clean, tidy and take care in what they do, probably about the same time, maybe a little longer :)

Could be over a week before I'm able to start though...

I am willing to wait.

Should I gather a list of feature suggestions and stuff, or would it be better to just let you build as you go?

A list of feature suggestions would help me start somewhere - If there is stuff not on the list that I think up on the way I'll chuck em in :p

i dont mind paying a small amt if it's good. some suggestions:

top 10 most comments
top 10 rated
editors pick
authors page - listing of stories/poems etc written by author
categories and subcats - stories (horror, fantasy), poems (romance, spiritual)
let users specify categories and subcats when submitting
required synopsis field (pretty much like thread descriptions)
featured story of the week/month

that'd be cool brinnie. to add on an extra suggestion... i particularly liked the way literotica had for their submission members's profiles... something like this:

http://english.literotica.com:81/stories/memberpage.php?uid=446609

Thats one of the things I love about their script.
It would also be nice if their story profiles had a link back to their forum profiles... But I think that's probably a given.

i reckon it'd be good to merge them together into just that one. this way, the members wont complain about filling it out twice or something.

By the way, hellsatan,

What kind of damage are we looking at?

JirQUEST
08-05-2005, 12:59 PM
can i also suggest a multi-page feature for stories that are too long?

MrNase
08-05-2005, 02:09 PM
hellsatan:

Here's my suggestion.. You could add a little option to any thread something like 'this is a story'. This can be controlled by usergroup/forum/whatever

If 'this is a story' is set to yes the whole templates change and you'll see the story. The rest is easy:

You can pull off someone's threads with a query like
SELECT * FROM thread WHERE author = userid AND isstory = 1

In this way you can get the votings, the topten, most replies (comments) etc.

And on another page you could read _all_ stories off the database (SELECT * FROM thread WHERE isstory = 1)

The possibilites are endless.. And since this is using normal threads with just different templates all AJAX features remain and you don't have to take care off them :)

JirQUEST: this can be added, too :)

JirQUEST
08-05-2005, 02:59 PM
wont that be similar to the geek articles? u basically just decide which forums can hold stories.

MrNase
08-05-2005, 04:19 PM
Basically yes.. With this method any forum can hold a story :)

JirQUEST
08-06-2005, 07:33 AM

I personaly would like the script to be more original than just a hack of the forums. But then again, I don't exactly know what I'm talking about. But I DO know 2 things:

1) I don't like the idea of the stories main page to be forum/stories.php? I think it should be wesite.com/stories
2) Crazy URL's to Author's profile. Instead of website.com/forum/stories/member.php?u=34 I'm hoping it would be something more like membername.website.com or membername.stories.website.com or membername.website.com/stories or stories.website.com/membername

That is all for now :)

That is all for now :)http://membername.stories.website.com, etc. would require you to set that up on the server side with virtual sites which would be hellish for you to manage as the site administrator.

Would it be possible to achieve something like http://www.website.com/membername parsed from http://www.website.com/forum/stories.php?u=34 via mod rewrite?

I can't get the mod_rewrite hack on this site to make my vBulletin do http://www.website.com/forum/membername, so I really don't know...
What I DO know is that there's a hack for invision (http://mods.invisionize.com/db/index.php/f/5110) so I know it's possible without mod_rewrite.

This can easily be done if your server is set up correctly.

Just do http://www.website.com/stories/member?# as a redirect directory to the member profile... you could even set it up to be http://www.stories.website.com/member?#, or http://www.member.stories.website.com/?#

However, I dont like the idea of this becuase it seems to me like your trying to be fake. Sites that do the above do it because they need to, not because they think it makes them cool.

Btw, how much are you offering?

Really, how so?Sites that do the above do it because they need to, not because they think it makes them cool.[link (http://www.google.com/search?q=%22is+deviously+deviant%22&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8)]Btw, how much are you offering? How much do you think a hack of this magnitude; non-exclusive in the sense that everyone will be able to download; is worth?

Ron1n

Really, how so?Its like using big words when you could easily use a smaller, more common word that is equally descriptive.

[link (http://www.google.com/search?q=%22is+deviously+deviant%22&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8)
Perfect example. deviantART does that not because they think it looks cool, but because they need it. They have 14 million pieces of art and hundreds of thousands of members. Each member has their own portal style area with its own subdirectories. member.deviantart.com/x, member.deviantart.com/y member.deviantart.com/y/a, etc. Their url setup makes it easy to find anyones deviantions.

How much do you think a hack of this magnitude; non-exclusive in the sense that everyone will be able to download; is worth?I don't make the rates, thats what the clients do.

JirQUEST

why are we arguing over whether it's fake or not? tbe question here should be whether anyone wanna take the job, and if it's taken, how much would it cost?

do the clients really make the rates? if that's the case, can i put up say $5? come on, let's get real. give us an estimate.

these things take a while to develop, trust me i just finished doing something similar (won't be released for free, or at all for now as it's not even gold) but yeah it don't suit your needs, but just letting you know these things take time.

I figured that the fact that we're (4 people) willing to PAY CASH (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=94105) might add to the impulse factor...

It's times like this when I wish guests could read this board.

This may do the trick:

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=97341

But it may be an overkill as well, unless you want a CMS to organize it. Check the Drupal site for "taxonomy", to see how their categories work. It's quite powerful, where you can file items into multiple categories, and categories can belong to multiple branches, etc.

PM me to send your cash :)

Hi.. Tamarin,

It's a nice Drupal Mod. But I doubt it will be suitable for fiction sites.

The best script for fiction is e-Fiction v2.0.1 (http://efiction.wallflowergirl.com/) (free).

If somebody can make a mod like this, or at least combine the registrations, it would be useful to us.
