View Full Version : Starting to regret my vB purchase.

Between this site and vbulltin.com, I am getting no where fast.

And you know, I'm not a complete n00b. I can skin an Invision board from the ground up. But I'm not familiar with vB customizing. But the questions I am asking are increadibly simple.

And to give you an idea what I'm talking about, is that I've been trying to add a CUSTOM COLOR to the swatch for 3 days... 3 friggin days...

vB won't help me because I'm touching the code and you guys don't help me because...? I dunno, do you think my questions are so stupid I should re-read the manual or do a search on the forum?

But I don't know "what's what" in your world- but I do know it's a little different.
IPB has Invisionize for 3rd party support. They are to IPB what you are to vB. And I swear, I ask them something simple like, "How do I add more post icons" and it's answered within 1-3 hours. Not here.

I understand you do not guarantee support. But who does? No one. But here, I can't even bump my topic when it falls to the bottom of the page because of this automerge thing. (how lame)

How stupid can vB get to not supporting custom color? Really, what is it, 1 template edit or something? And then I have this other issue where moderators can view the Admin's IP, and the list goes on...

And I'm not saying it's your fault. It's most likely vB's. But I'm just ranting.

Between the 2 boards, I cannot find n00b sollutions to n00b problems. This makes me shudder at the thought of installing a hack.

Modifying colors for the most part does not require editing any code, including the templates. Jelsoft should be able to directly support your unmodified installation. I would say, though, that vB3's modification learning curve is far more sharp than vB2's was.

Yea, I'm finding that out. It's so simple that is scares me.

But my issue is dealing with the color swatch for the post screen. Here's the thread.

As good a product as vbulletin is (i love it) it seems that this:

There is no function to do this. This requires modifying the code. We cannot officially support code modifications or forums running modified code, however can try searching or asking for help with this over at www.vbulletin.org.
Is the answer most people get unless asking very simple "how to" questions concerning functionalty..

your way for asking things done wont help you.
If you are not familiar with CSS or Simple HTML code for selecting an HEX colour its not vB's problem.

And they told you to ask for suppor @ vbulletin.com

Roxie, the color swatch on the post screen lacks deeppink. I mean, it has magenta, but I'm not happy with it's selection and I would like to add more colors to it.

You can modify a IPB board yet you cant mod a vbulletin board?!?!?!? Your a troll!

Try a less antagonistic tone as no one on this site is getting paid to provide you with anything.

Just put the hex color code for the color you want, and voila.

What are you talking about, they told me to ask here.

I would... If I knew where it is. Do you know where it is?
You know I'm trying to do this for WYSIWYG, right?

Intersting how www.vbulletin.com will not help you add colors "because it is altering the code", blah blah, but they have no problem instructing you on how to "alter code" here (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114545)

My advice is to learn some hex color codes or keep a guide to the side for it. There are also many places that list colors and their hex codes on the net if you are intrested in doing search for them.

Honestly you should avoid using that thing all togther, I have never used it but then again back when I got into this stuff we didn't even have one. :)

Trust me, going from hex is the best way.

I understand you do not guarantee support. But who does? No one. But here, I can't even bump my topic when it falls to the bottom of the page because of this automerge thing. (how lame)

We use this script so the staff doesn't spend half the day merging posts and telling people not to bump their threads. If you wait 24 hours you can double post and bring the thread back to the top of the forum.

okay. ou don't have to use the color swatch to code vbulletib. you can input any hex value in tere. To find hex values try finding a good hex value chart.

http://www.december.com/html/spec/color.html

take the number of the color and put it in the field. If you need a screenshot to help you I'll post it tomorrow as I can't do it on his computr for a very lnog and complicated reason. Hope this has helped.

And yes I do get agrivated when vb.com does nothing to try to help you extend their code the least little bit.

If you want to edit the color of wysiwyg, then go to the CSS manager or whatever it's called, and edit the class, named .wysiwyg

Edit: NVM, I know what you are trying to do know. And I don't know how to do it. :ermm:

I read his post over at vb.com and it was quite rude and his posts here were quite rude. Its all right there in all style vars but he wants people to do things for him on demand. Life doesnt work that way.

Some people are just never happy.

Gotta a question for him. If you liked IPB so much, why did you switch? That doesnt make sense to me.

This thing is truely lame to the nth degree. I don't like too many bumps, but this things merges everything, not only duplicates. I'd reply to a question, then reply to another question, they are merged. The person who asked me the second question never gets notified about the update, since it's merged into the 1st question.....

But if you are familiar with IPB, getting used to vB take time, and the opposite, I think, would be the same.

why dont you stop whining and go try to make the changes you want to your forum?

Gunshot

Why in heck would you need to add a color swatch?

that thing is just there for quick editing.......

open Photoshop.....create whatever color you like and enter the hex value

or enter a valid image path

I think people are just starting to look over threads you've made at this point because its just too much already.

The colours are defined in the javascript files in the "clientscript" folder ;

For vB 3.0.7 you need the vbulletin_editor.js, for 3.5.0 it's vbulletin_textedit.js

In the relevant file named above you will find a section defining the colours in an array ;

var coloroptions = new Array();
coloroptions = {
"#000000" : "Black",
"#A0522D" : "Sienna",
"#556B2F" : "DarkOliveGreen",
"#006400" : "DarkGreen",
"#483D8B" : "DarkSlateBlue",
"#000080" : "Navy",
"#4B0082" : "Indigo",
"#2F4F4F" : "DarkSlateGray",
"#8B0000" : "DarkRed",
The above is just the first few lines.

Edit the colours in this array until your heart is content.

don't confuse template mods with file edits.

Oooo, thanks, I'll try it now :)

Just curious, do you where to framework of that code is? I'm trying to add a 6th row.

All the WYSIWYG code is in the javascript files. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to tell you what to change or where to change it. My knowledge of Javascript is limited to cut and paste.

Boy, there sure are some rude, lazy people in this thread.

Danny, COBRAws, Brad, TruthElixirX, Dream, and Gunshot all suggested "learning some HTML and hexcodes". It should be possible, easy in fact, to add colors to the palette.

If they are going to start saying that adding colors to JavaScript files is "unsupported", then I officially brand vBulletin tech support as LAZY.

Brinnie asks a lot of annoying questions, but adding colors to the color swatch palette in the Quick Editor and WYSIWYG editor is perfectly valid and should be built into vB.

Paul M was the first to show some maturity and identify where and how to modify the colors.

and it's easier to do than most of the template mods posted at vBulletin.com.

Now if I can just figure out how to ADD colors. Adding colors to that palette has strange results -- you get white boxes that do nothing. The 8 across and 5 down (40 total colors) limit is hard coded somewhere else and I have had no success overriding it.

And before anyone wants to flame me, I answer dozens of tech support questions at vBulletin a day.

Was it really important to bump an 9 month old thread, started by a member which is no longer here on vb.org?

if you want to start a discussion about that topic, please start a new thread
