This is a beta version of vBulletin 3.5 lite.
and it is just that. LITE!
There will be updates to this, including better error message support and re-written comon templates.
But for now, its fairly basic, but it gets the job done well

Alright, looks like I got the bugged niiped in the butt, I had copied code and not replaced it with the proper varibles when releasing.
Should be all good to go now (uploading in a moment and sending an email)
Other notes for version 0.2
- Fixed small lack of phrase (hard coded english)
- Removed the table from the navbar (the breadcrumb)
- Updated for (not really, just downloaded from) RC1

Wow.... talk about sparse. I can understand "LITE" but this is well beyond that. What is the target market here?

PDA or low bandwidth, mostly. I was tring to slimline everything
Overtime I plan to continue development of this to include a plugin to auto switch to the style on identified pda / mobile phone user agents.
and continue the slimlined templates in other places, at least as much as possible, preferably for the usercp (or at least parts).

That's great for accessing through PDA's, maybe even mobiles.
Nice style. :D
Very nice for mobiles yeah!
Make the quick thread links ON the index for faster posting (less money for browsing on the site)

Ahhh... Good luck with that. What is the PDA and Mobile access on forums, percentage wise? This isn't a market that I really plan on accomodating for the near future.
OMG!!! Why is this not in the Features Request at VB.COM!!!!
Dude, you are awesome. This is something that SHOULD be in the Product...this is so useful.
Great Job!!!

Its a growing market, I know that sooner or later I'm going to have a PDA and cell phone for emergencys. I want to be able to check on things, stuff like this helps me in the long run as well :)

Love you work. However I found a glitch. I selected a thread and then added a new post. But the new post didn't appear in the thread I had choosen, but a different thread in a different forum.
Very strange.

pretty cool the way the forums with new posts are highlighted green
would be nice to have a link "use default style" somewhere, members can get stuck in that style

Actually I realize that... I am questioning the long-term viability of participating in discussions with a PDA or Cell-Phone and their limited capabilities.

If you would have said this 5 years back (remember the Nokia Communicator, big device hardly 10% of the capabilities of a modern smallsized phone) i would have agreed.
But more and more phones (and more even PDA/MDA) are turning into full usable computers. Lol even my wife now has a MDA with Windows Mobile, IE, Word, Excel, you name it, you can even still use it as telephone.

True, and I expect that an increasing number of people will be online via a PDA or similar. But I too would question how many would use it for forum participation.
Some will for a time, I think more as a gimmick factor, but they are too much of a hassle to post with. The screen size is what really puts me off. Call me a big monitor snob but...
Though, I am still really keen to get a decent lite skin. I have a number of Unix freaks on my forum and they don't like my bright sparkly graphics (and I don't have a lot compared with some styles). They want plain text and that is all.

Yes but not every user participates. Some may want information or research the answer to a question and a lite skin gives them a fast and easy way to access the forum posts via a mobile device.
No they may not click on a banner ad, but if they find your forum a useful resource, it stands to reason they will refer it or also access from their pc based browser later.
This is a great skin for a particular audience.

I am questioning the long-term viability of participating in discussions with a PDA or Cell-Phone and their limited capabilities.This light version has other benefits as well. It is easier for blind users to navigate with their text-to-speech devices.
It is also easier for data-mining scripts to navigate--which enables the building of an automated message gathering and posting application--an OLR.

Wow.... talk about sparse. I can understand "LITE" but this is well beyond that. What is the target market here?
Well there are 100s of styles... probably less than 1% of vB users use a PDA/mobile, or require ultra low bandwidth, but hey, theres only one style [that I can see], or at the very least: less than 1%.
Those statistics match up nicely if you ask me. Not everything has to be for the general audience. :)

Thanks Zac - Nice style, I'll probably install it because the 'lite' style on my site is shameful.

Don't forget the world isn't US (or english-based) only....
for example, I'm in Korea and the no question whateversoever able cell-phone/pda viability.
Some ppl use cell-phones more than their pc and the tech is so advanced now (out here at least....Korea is WAAYY ahead in in the cell market than the US) that cell phone and pcs are comparable on many the most important aspects. Some younger types can actually type FASTER on their cell than on a keyboard :-O...without looking....one hand!). no joke...they had competition on TV just last month.
phone here have high-res screens, 5+ (!) Megap. cameras, 3-D gaming (like virtual fighter level quality), broadcast TV, mp3, movies, internet, commerse, broadband speeds, etc etc....... all on your cellphone....
and available NOW and in HUGE participation and penetration numbers. And big conglomerate companies are eating content up for big $$$$$$ like you wouldn't believe.
in fact, I'd worry that this is TOO simple for phones out here more than the reverse. :-0 but its the right idea....and best to start simple...
PLEASE KEEP AT IT!!!! this is well worth the effort and honesly I'm surprised this was never brought up before!!!! :D :D
if they scoff at 'round here lemme know.. instead I'll help ya reach an appreciatived 10s of millions people on the other side of the world. ;) heh. (I'm so not kidding.)

I can't believe how big the market is, I installed a PDA style a few weeks ago and my users LOVE it. The number of PDA and Smartphone users is higher then a thought and is growing every day.
This is something VB should look into making a feature. :)

Zachery, this is great. And to Wayne, you have a point about the long-term - something like this won't matter in 2 years or so when everyone in the world has some sort of EDGE or 3G enabled phone or PDA or BlackBerry-like device. However, in two years, I also see a vast and rapid change in the vB product, as well. The modern mentality is one of instant gratification, so long-term viability or not, this project is good for use now.
And lets not mention the forums such as BlackBerryForums.com, HowardForums.com, or any of the umpteen others that are directed towards mobile users and mobile technologies. Just because a forum for My Little Pony won't have mobile visitors doesn't mean that some other forum wouldn't...
Someone else mentioned that mobile phones are now capable of whatever parsing, but the simple fact of it is - there's still a global bandwidth issue in the mobile market. GPRS's claims of 50kb/s and more is f'n ridiculous... 15-25kb/s is tops, so you try and navigate HAPPILY using that crap. EDGE and EVDO should be rolled out in N. America in the next few weeks/months, so maybe things will change at that point, but I doubt it. There will be atleast 2-3 years for a demand in slim-line, fast-browsing products.

Zachery, you can download a BlackBerry simulator program (I believe they also make these for Palm, etc), if thats all you want to be able to further development.
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=00EC53C4682D36F5C4359F4AE7BD7BA1
Get the JDE 4.0.2 version for the latest handheld OS code. You have your choice of running the handheld from ANY BlackBerry handheld available - both the 72xx and 7100 handheld models and screen resolutions. You will need to start up the MDS simulator first, but after that, you can start up one of the handhelds and be surfing on your computer via simulation.
Its a cheap fix to your problem, but probably not the one you wanted... hehe. :-)

Nice job Zachery. In a future release is there a chance you can add a function so the member can change the skin. I installed on a test board and did not see any way for a member to change their style back to a regular one if they were back on their computer.

Just add /?styleid=1 after your board-url, and in most cases you should be fine. unless ofcourse if you disabled the 1st (default) skin
Very good work. I installed and have been testing with my PDA and mobile device.
Some mods i did to get working a little better:
- Spacer Size (pixels): Set to 0 pixels
(Spacing between the body border and the main content)
- Add 'go to main style' link (at bottom)
- Set users nicks in bold
- check quote font size (is different than message font size)
- pagination links at bottom
- remove <ul ..> "from forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost" template (space saving is a must for using with these devices)
- replace ( → ) character in forumhome_lastpostby by a simple > or similar (some devices doesn't recognise that $rarr ; thing :)
Some more:
- reduce Add Reply box size
- add forums navbar at bottom

I'll think about adding some sort of markup for usernames, but I'd prefer to avoid it. I'm thinking about a <hr> to seperate the post abit more
Ah.. I didn't think about the bbcodes.. Thats where the plugin side of this will eventually come in. But i will do my best to see what can be done with the templates.
I've changed this to 5, as I believe there should be some spacing
I won't be removing the lists, it helps the flow of the page. I will see about modifying the css to make them not space as far out however.
What would be a good size for the reply box.
I don't think we really need ANOTHER navbar. Thats what the one at the top is for.

I'm trying to edit the footer of this template to include the theme chooser, and after clicking 'Save', I get the following error. The following error occurred when attempting to evaluate this template:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE, expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or T_NUM_STRING in E:\wwwroot\opiophile.org\includes\adminfunctions_t emplate.php(3519) : eval()'d code on line 2
This is likely caused by a malformed conditional statement. It is highly recommended that you fix this error before continuing, but you may continue as-is if you wish.Probably needs to go to vBulletin.com, but how can I restore the theme chooser so those that accidentally pick this theme can escape?

You should place a link to usercp at the top of the main forum page. Otherwise, users will not be able to switch back to normal style. Or I am wrong?
BTW, it seem to work ok on VB 3.5 Final.

you need to add the allow members to change styles drop down menu to the bottom, and maybe a new post feature when your in the top level of a forum ?
but as said this is an awsome release,
Also does anyone have the code that makes PDA, WAP, etc automaticly use that style i had it before but cant remember where this code was ?

Hi,
I have been testing your Lite style and I like it. A couple of issues I noticed are the following:
1. It is only possible to reply to existing threads, I found no method for starting a new thread.
2. Once someone has started this mode, there is no easy method to return to the normal style. I solved this by adding a link in the footer "Switch off PDA mode"
I also set the Spacer Size (pixels) to 1. 0 is too small and even 5 is too large when displayed on a PDA.

Actually I realize that... I am questioning the long-term viability of participating in discussions with a PDA or Cell-Phone and their limited capabilities.
Actaully I find that quite a negative opinion from a member of one of the most dynamic web applications around, things move forward, well generally. Most computers and software has done since they began, so PDA's are not, they are just going to stand still ?
I dont have a use for this style yet but If i could talk my ma round to paying a bit of $$ out for her entertainment and arts local club site instead of being comp ignorant and wanting to spend as little as possible this is likley the style she would want.

I have just upgraded my forum to 3.5.1 and I am now being asked to update a number of templates related to this style.
Is there anything which actually needs to be updated, or can I just save them in the new format and forget about it?
By the way, I think this style is great and works well with my PDA.

That's great, thanks...
When I get some time I have the following planned
Changing announcements (I'd like suggestion on their formatting, bold etc, and maybe a hr to devide the page abit?)
Quote BBcode
Maybe move to a tannish or somthing color scheme, or offer multile colors, at least to show more than plain white.
It doesnt seem to work for cell phones with small er displays. Any idea how to change things so they are not all scrunched up? I would love to have this work for cell phones.

great skin, but a few comments, i installed it and then uninstalled it.
you mention - Template changes. what are they?
and i don't see a way for members to make a new thread. some functions are missing like the nav bar. and basically anything that needs a button like new thread, new post, etc etc. is missing. and is there a zip file?
i'm running 3.5.1, is this part of my issues?

This style is lite and thus some things are not in yet, its also in beta.
There is currently no way to make a thread, and theres no real need for a navbar IMO.
its designed to be able to browse the forums, and add a response at this time.
Zachery,
Any ideas with my post above?

Haven't done any massive testing, but will be in the future, depending on the cell phone things could be limited and theres not too much I can do about this...

I'm also hoping to write a plugin in the future that will identify mainstream pda/mobile/etc browsers and instantly redirect them to this style.
Altho I haven't been able to collect much data on pda browser User Agents

Might be better to just affiliate the skin with a specific address, ie http://wap.vbulletin.org/forum or https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/wap.
One vBulletin forum I can think of that uses a WAP extensively is http://www.sprintusers.com

I know they do ;) check the showgroups page.
Thats always an idea, but it gets more complicated after that.
sprintusers uses a wiforums addon that does more than just a style.

I installed this skin yesterday, and it works great. I tweaked it a little bit, noticeably the quick style chooser. Without this, it's a bit difficult to switch back to the standard skin. I copied the code from the another skin, and put it at the very bottom of the header template of this skin. It seems to be working fine. :) Thanks Zachery.

My next steps is to start redoing the most common error pages. (like when you don't have enough charaters and submit)
I really wish I had a pda / cellphone to do etsting with though :/
All you need is the PalmSource simulator, which you can find at this link (http://www.palmos.com/dev/tools/simulator/). Unfortunately you have to sign up as a developer, but it's easy and free.
Once the simulator is on your desktop, then you can install a web browser (http://www.palmsource.com/interests/browsers/). Treos are running WebPro (http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/palmwebpro301fortungstent3.shtml) and another browser you can try is Xiino (http://www.mobirus.com/eng/products/Xiino/index_html).
Either one will allow you to install and test easily on your desktop.
Hope that helps!

Vtec44,
Thank you! That was the one thing missing from the style and I wasn't sure how to add it.
Now the style is perfect for my group who use Palm OS devices all the time to access the site - Nashville Palm Users Group (http://www.npug.org)

Generally it works, but its not useable since you can not change style, you can only change the style throught the admicp. But in somecases you can not do it, even when you change it throught the admincp the user can still only see the lite version. My guess is that if you disconnect the cockies will be deleted and you will be able to see the style that you choose from the admin cp. The only problem is that you CANNOT logout............
You must fix these bugs because there is no reason for anyone to use it, the style works like a trap.

Overtime I plan to continue development of this to include a plugin to auto switch to the style on identified pda / mobile phone user agents.
and continue the slimlined templates in other places, at least as much as possible, preferably for the usercp (or at least parts).
im sure it would work on the new wap phones also? ones that can view images n stuff??
anyway dude not sure if its already added! but what about log out text/ log in?

kick arse style man. i really needed a pda skin too!
added tbaleno's new thread code to FORUMHOME template - works great!
added some logout coding to the NAVBAR template directly under the login forum:
<if condition="$show['member']">
<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="login.php?$session[sessionurl]do=logout&logouthash=$bbuserinfo[logouthash]" onclick="return log_out()">$vbphrase[log_out]</a></td>
added this code to FOOTER template. add at very top which just sends you back to styleid 1 [or whichever you choose]:
<div class="smallfont" align="center"><a href="$vboptions[forumhome].php?styleid=1">Exit PDA Skin</a></div>
OR
you can add this to the FOOTER template to add the style selection box:
<form action="$vboptions[forumhome].php" method="get">
<table cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="$stylevar[outertablewidth]" class="page" align="center">
<tr>
<if condition="$show['quickchooser']">

This is not my work - I asked sometime back and someone posted this. It works under 3.5.4 for me from my PDA.
To make your mobile style automagically selected when a mobile device is detected edit your global.php, search for :
// ################################################## ###########################
// if user can control panel, allow selection of any style (for testing purposes)
// otherwise only allow styles that are user-selectable
and add the following immediately above it:
// BROWSER DETECT
$browsers = array(
"Windows CE",
"WebTV",
"AvantGo",
"Blazer",
"PalmOS",
"lynx",
"Go.Web",
"Elaine",
"ProxiNet",
"ChaiFarer",
"Digital Paths",
"UP.Browser",
"Mazingo",
"Mobile",
"T68",
"Syncalot",
"NetFront",
"Danger",
"Symbian",
"Nokia",
"Xiino",
"AU-MIC",
"EPOC",
"BlackBerry",
"Wireless",
"Handheld"
);
if(preg_match('/('.implode('|', $browsers).')/i', $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'], $match))
{
$mobile=1;
}
else if (isset($_SERVER['HTTP_UA_OS']))
{
if (strstr($_SERVER['HTTP_UA_OS'],"POCKET PC") !== false)
{
$mobile=1;
}
}
else
{
$mobile=0;
}
if ($mobile==1)
{
//echo "You are on a mobile device!";
$styleid='9';
}
// END BROWSER DETECT
Change the 3rd last line " $styleid='9'; " to the style number of your mobile/pda Style. You can add user agent strings of other browsers to the list.
**NOTE - YOU CAN NOT OVERRIDE THIS, IF YOU ARE ON A MOBILE DEVICE THIS WILL BE THE ONLY STYLE YOU CAN USE
ON another note, if you need to get to otherwise unavailable screens when in your mobile style - just manually enter in the URL you want to go to...

Be my guest. I've searched for where I got the info form in the first place, but to no avail as yet...
I have been using a modified version of "Alabama" style (which in itself is a modified version of the "Archive" or PDA style) for a while to work with PDAs. This was under 3.0.9, I only ugraded to 3.5.4 yesterday, so am using this style for the moment till I can redo my mobile style for 3.5.4. I'm not a coder, so it's very much a trial and error thing for me.
I'm looking forward to any further mods you make to it. I have a few regular PDA users (320x240 resolution) including myself and would be happy to test for you.

it shouldn't too hard to have a link which goes to the default style. worst case is have a post with a link to your forum home using default style:
www.website.name/forum/index.php?styleid=xxx
where xxx is the styleid number of your default style...

quickstyle chooser at top of forum click here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=133199&highlight=quickstyle+chooser)
here is the code:
at top of header add this:

</optgroup>
</select></td></tr></if>
</table>
</form>
To the footer template for the chooser in the bottom of the page and then I added
if ($_SERVER['HTTP_UA_PIXELS']) {
$_POST['styleid'] = 14;
define('STYLEID', 14);
$vbulletin->userinfo['styleid'] = 14;
$styleid = 14;
}
to the top of the global.php file right before the init.php include so that it forces my Windows CE device to use the Lite style (which is style ID 14, you will have to change your style accordingly.)

Hey Zachary, what I want to do is in the box where mobile users type their reply, I would like it to automatically say (Posted via mobile device)~, so it's in there and when they make their post, it shows they have posted via mobile, without them having to manually type it in.
What template would I edit to add that in? Does that make sense?

After logging out from this skin forum is resetting to default one. Any idea how to keep the same skin?

I get this when I try to install this:
This file was created using a different version of vBulletin from the one you are running.
Your version: 3.6.8
File version: 3.5.0 Release Candidate 1

NM, I figured out how to get it to work. I edited the xml file and changed the version to 3.6.8.

Does anyone know what changes need to be made in this style for the 3.6.10 update? I get a security token error when posting from my mobile site.

Nevermind, I figured it out. I had to make the template changes to the SHOWTHREAD template, and it's working now.

PROBLEM:
Installed... all looks good until I go to hit submit on a reply to a thread and I get:
Your submission could not be processed because a security token was missing or mismatched.
If this occurred unexpectedly, please inform the administrator and describe the action you performed before you receved this error.
SOLUTION:
In the SHOWTHREAD template in your mobile style, find:
<input type="hidden" name="s" value="$session[sessionhash]" />
Directly Below, ADD:
<input type="hidden" name="securitytoken" value="$bbuserinfo[securitytoken]" />

what happened to the screenshot or the demo
Most awesome thing ever, couldn't of imagined for a better style!
installed ^-^
I installed this skin yesterday, and it works great. I tweaked it a little bit, noticeably the quick style chooser. Without this, it's a bit difficult to switch back to the standard skin. I copied the code from the another skin, and put it at the very bottom of the header template of this skin. It seems to be working fine. :) Thanks Zachery.
