Has the 301 permanent redirect issue been solved in this release?
Is there any chance of getting the "Last Post" links on the forum home to be the same SEO format?
Thanks,

Dean C thank you so much for all of your work on this, I've yet to install (haven't upgraded to 3.5 from 3.0.x) but I'm following this thread very closely and this will be one of the first plugins I install for my 3.5 board.
I also look forward to your latest update of this code that you mentioned, I'd also be happy to donate towards this project - the time you spend on this is greatly appreciated :)

I installed it, it installed flawlessly.
My forum titles and thread titles are all now in .html format with proper thread titles, this is quite awesome :D...I've yet to run into any issues, but I've only been running it for today.

Hi
Thank you for this plugin but there is an issue.
I have specified a subforum as a link.
The rewrite works just fine up to the link forum.
After that all urls are the normal forum urls with no rewrite.
take a look:
http://www.hiphop-battles.com/forum/index.php
(below "Beatbox Tutorials" it stops)
the issue is only present on the index page.
Any idea where the problem is?

It's fixed in the latest beta. I have a user who is kind enough to be testing it at the moment :) And no I won't rewrite lastpost URLs for reasons stated earlier in the thread :)

Woot, last thing I was waiting for was the forum clean urls working when you have subforums as links in the cell headers, super :)
But, wouldnt the lastpost be tagged as duplicate though? - there is the clean url pointing to the thread, and then the lastpost is still php?
I guess it's easy to get around, you can just do a conditional and check if the visitor is logged in, if they are then show the lastpost links, if not, don't show them. I allready do that with the print-thread link, I have seen google bot spider the print-thread links even with rel=nofollow on it, don't know if it indexes it, but you never know.
Subforums as links in the cell headers on forumhome still doesn't work.
After some messing around with different settings, as far as I can tell, as soon as you have a forum where you have it setup so the subforums shows as links in the tablecell below, AND you set the parent forum to 'act as forum=yes' then the rewrite will stop working from that point on.
This setup causes rewrite links to stop working:
Main forum (Act as forum=yes)
-- subforum1 subforum2 subforum 3
(Any forums below this point is also not rewritten no matter what settings)
If I have the same setup and set 'Main forum' in the example above to 'Act as forum=no' then everything works.
Hope this helps a little figuring out this bug.
EDIT: add to the above, if you have any subforum in the above setup where it is a link (Enter an url in 'Forum Link') then it also stops working.

We have second, third and forth tier subforums displaying and re-writing with no issues.
We have second, third and forth tier subforums displaying and re-writing with no issues.
Try and add a subforum that is a link (Add forum, enter 'Forum Link')
Like this:
Main Forum
--Subfoum
---- ChildForum1 Childforum2(Link) <= Stops working from here and any forums after.
No biggie, I can live without that functionallity, I'll just ad the links I had like that to the navbar or something.

The way I optimize this is on a per-need basis. vBadvanced is a third-party script and I have no idea how it works. If someone wants to look into what the THIS_SCRIPT constant is in the vBadvanced file and whether or not it uses its own global.php/init.php, and contributes code which follows the current structure, I'll include it in the release. But i'd rather not get into providing support for third-party addons :)

on the forum home page, the forum names now come up in the URL. however, the thread titles in the URL in the last post section still show "showthreadX". however, in the forumdisplay, the thread titles show up in the url.

i think the same logic applies here as to the Last Post on why these URLS shouldn't be rewritten. in essence, they are technically most recent Last Posts.

Not really, but it's a modification for vB. This modification is for vB, not for its modifications ;) If i went and did the rewriting for every modification, I'd have no time :)
Found another Bug!
If i want to rate the a thread with this URL:
http://www.rapmatics.de/t384-quotein-bisschen-rapquotep-free-download6-trackskinkerlitzchen.html
there will be an 403 Error!

Regarding the last post and other links that will be treated as duplicate content, imo it makes more sense to remove them alltogether for guests (Spiders) with conditional statments in the templates.
That's what I have done, all links that are php versions of the pages that the hack rewrites I have removed with conditionals for guests, takes a couple hours but well worth it.
I have also removed archives and external.php because they leak the php versions to, if someone grabs your feed then other spiders can follow the links to the php versions from wherever feed is used.

Remember not all guests are spiders. The last post even serves a function to guests who don't bother to register. As the new post indicators work off a cookie/session :)
Yeah I know, but I'd rather downgrade slightly for guests and not risk dupe content, I have of course tried using the forums as a guest and evaluated the changes, and unless you know vbulletin well, you'd never know what was missing, if you do it right it's very small changes overall, like missing lastpost links/lastpost.gifs, just show last post dates instead with no link, sort links on forumdisplays I just downgraded to text instead of a link etc..
And hey, more reasons for real visitors to register :)
I would love to have this hack, but I need this for 8852-2 charset.

I tested rating a thread at http://de.castlecops.com/forum using this plugin (and modified to match a bit of http://googletap.com for foreign characters) with absolutely no issues. I can also merge threads with no issues either. I can't seem to replicate the bugs.
Rating at all is not a problem, just in a thread with a URL like this which has beeng generated in this case. I think there was an Problem because the user has used Quotes for the Title.
You can use the new URLs to move particular postings? I cant believe that.

This plugin is working like a charm on our board, but the only problem i'm having with it is that it breaks up pages after 10 posts.
Anybody else experienced this or know how to fix it? I tried to double the post #s from inside the admin, to see if it would just even it out but no matter how many posts I set it to display before splitting the page, it keeps showing only 10 posts inside a thread and then splits the page.
Thanks everyone.

The perpage setting is hardcoded in the .htaccess file. This cannot be avoided unfortunately due to the way vB outputs its pagenav URLs, so if you want to change it find where it says pp=10 in the .htaccess file and change the 10 to the value you want :)

But I do not think that url needs foreign chracters. At least in my language we have same letters as english, but we use additional punctuation marks to differ some letters from each other (latin2),
than I only need to translate for url rewrite this letters into normal letter without punctuation symbol. For example ?=a ?=i ?=e

Well that is something different :) But what use is it having an english character set in your URLs when your site is foreign? Your search engine users will be searching in google, yahoo or msn etc using foreign characters and your URLs will not have these characters so the benefit is lost.

If you mean only specific threads, then not with this plugin.
Thanks for the script, it works perfectly. I just think it work well if it were for specific threads because then search engines would spider them better right?
For my site, most threads are news articles which would make the proposed hack ideal.

Because also Google and other robots translate these letters and they equal them.
Also lot of people do not use punctuation symbols, they got used to write emails without punctuation, because it cause troubles for email clients to read them.
Then I suppose crawlers started to equal those letters, because sometime they are in use and sometime they don't.
Nobody use foreign characters in URLs anyway.

Click Plugin-Manger and delete it - then remove the lines you added in your .htaccess file
*EDIT - I just reread your post, you stated it's not visible in your plugin-manager but it should be...just checked my admincp and it's there for me.
This is not to push preasure on you....

DC, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this.
I asked T2DMan if he was ever going to make his google sitemap mod compatible with your rewrite hack, basically he says it's more damaging to have this installed than to not have it.
His words exactly :
Meantime, I dont want to add any credibility to a rewrite script that I consider is so half done that its worthless, and in fact damaging.
What are your thoughts on that? I certainly don't agree with him.

It is damaging, but not to you, to a specific company who wants your money for an encoded script, with some serious privacy issues. :)

First, kudos to Dean C for working on this and enabling all those who wish to get away from an encoded schema (look at vbulletin... people will pay for commercial, but do you need to encode the product?).
Second, I've made my own modifications (as I said before) and I love it.
Thirdly, I have no issues with it. Browse around, check it out: http://de.castlecops.com/forum. Alls well in wonderland.

Well I noticed on castlecops you still have the foreign chars in the actual URI's. My problem with that is that no-one showed me evidence that these chars are actually valid in a URI. I've changed a lot since then but I used this function to convert foreign chars to their english equivalent:
// function to replace foreign chars with their english equivalent
function remove_accents($text)
{
$trans = get_html_translation_table(HTML_ENTITIES);
foreach($trans as $literal =>$entity)
{
if(ord($literal) >= 192)
{
$replace[] = substr($entity, 1, 1);
$search[] = $literal;
}
}
return str_replace($search, $replace, $text);
}

You need to take a look at IRIs and the URI-> IRI mapping (international resource identifier).

Great hack but I'm having a little trouble using it on Windows 2003 IIS6 and using the ISAP Rewrite dll (http://www.isapirewrite.com/)
Basicaly it does the same job as the Apache equivalent through a ini file in the web root.
This is my httpd.ini file:
[ISAPI_Rewrite]
RewriteRule /forums/archive/([^/.?]+\.html) /forums/archive/index.php\?$1 [I,L]
RewriteRule /forums/(^f([0-9]+)-([A-Za-z0-9\-]+)\.html) /forums/forumdisplay.php?f=$1 [I,L]
RewriteRule /forums/(^t([0-9]+)(((-p)([0-9]+))?)([A-Za-z0-9\-]+)\.html) /forums/showthread.php?t=$1&page=$5&pp=10
[I,L]
The archive works perfectly but I'm getting 404's when I try to activate your plug in. I "think" its got something to do with the rule as I have had to add /forums/ to the condition as my config file is in the web root...
Can you help at all?

Sorted. The amended rules are below:
RewriteRule /forums/f([0-9]+)-([A-Za-z0-9\-]+)\.html$ /forums/forumdisplay.php\?f=$1 [I,L]
RewriteRule /forums/t([0-9]+)(((-p)([0-9]+))?)([A-Za-z0-9\-]+)\.html$ /forums/showthread.php\?t=$1&page=$5&pp=10
[I,L]
Clicks install :D
Just realised that \ is not showing up in the code block above so for example /forums/forumdisplay.php?f=$1 should be /forums/forumdisplay.php\?f=$1

There is no issue here. That URL serves a function. It redirects to a page with an anchor on with the most recent post. There is no reason whatsoever to rewrite this URL.

Those things are basically for aesthetics. It helps the user see the topic of the thread they are going to, especially if its offsite.

This is impossible because it makes no changes to your database whatsoever.
I don't know how it happened, but it most certainly did.
When I tried to import the plugin I got a blank white page in admincp that told me that there was an error and that I was either using a vB 3.5.1 file (which I wasn't) or that I needed to upload tools.php and rebuild the cache. When I and everyone else got completely locked out of my forum (including admincp).
Floris came to the rescue and got it fixed today.

OK i tried this but for some reason i couldn't get it to work.
I already have SEO friendly url's running in my subdreamer part of the site so i uploaded the plugin and put the copied
RewriteRule ^f([0-9]+)-([A-Za-z0-9\-]+)\.html$ forumdisplay.php?f=$1 [L]
RewriteRule ^t([0-9]+)(((-p)([0-9]+))?)([A-Za-z0-9\-]+)\.html$ showthread.php?t=$1&page=$5&pp=10 [L]
To my already established .htaccess file
Options All -Indexes
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php
so i ended up with
Options All -Indexes
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php
RewriteRule ^f([0-9]+)-([A-Za-z0-9\-]+)\.html$ forumdisplay.php?f=$1 [L]
RewriteRule ^t([0-9]+)(((-p)([0-9]+))?)([A-Za-z0-9\-]+)\.html$ showthread.php?t=$1&page=$5&pp=10 [L]
It was working in as much to say that the forum links changed to html links but clicking them resulted in a page not found.
So i thought maybe its the base url as my forums, like many, are in the /forum/ directory of the root.
So i removed that, still the same. So i changed too
RewriteBase /forum
Still the same
and tried
RewriteBase /forum/
Still the same. What did i do wrong ? :)

It's not that simple descds. This rule redirects everything (which is a bad thing), but I won't get into a discussion on poor usage of mod_rewrite now:
RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php
This will send every single URL you type to index.php. Why it's doing that I have no idea. This should be a temporary fix for you though:
Options All -Indexes
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^f([0-9]+)-([A-Za-z0-9-]+).html$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^t([0-9]+)(((-p)([0-9]+))?)([A-Za-z0-9-]+).html$
RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php
RewriteRule ^f([0-9]+)-([A-Za-z0-9-]+).html$ forumdisplay.php?f=$1 [L]
RewriteRule ^t([0-9]+)(((-p)([0-9]+))?)([A-Za-z0-9-]+).html$ showthread.php?t=$1&page=$5&pp=10 [L]
Give it a try anyway :)

I personally think a rewrite of all urls would help avoid confusion here. Users are seeing two types of urls in different situations and i know it is only really cosmetic but it would make it look uniform.
So the last reply and who's online SEO friendly urls would just make it look and feel more intergrated ...
But either way its an outstanding hack and i'm happy to use it.

thanks that did it :)
It doesnt re-write the urls to html in who's online though and has the older php relevance. I assume that was intentional ? How would that effect spiders ? if at all ..
Clicking the url to a thread a user is viewing sends them to the

instead of
http://www.talkdvd.net/forum/t347-online-dvd-rental-grows-ever-stronger-with-an-expanding-future.html

This is semi-fixed in the new version. I've just thought of a way I can rewrite the URLs. But at the moment all old URLs are 301-redirected to the new URLs, with no negative consequence.

if you mean that clicking

should redirect and show as

im not sure if this has been brought up before, but when moving posts to an existing thread, using the URL rewritten by this hack results to an error.
in the URL examples above, vBulletin would ask for the URL of the thread to which the posts would be moved and if you put http://www.talkdvd.net/forum/t347-online-dvd-rental-grows-ever-stronger-with-an-expanding-future.html rather than http://www.talkdvd.net/forum/showthread.php?t=347 then you'll get an error.

1) I'm not aware of any bugs with the paging system. If anyone could show me a live example I'll look into it.
2) Please read earlier in the thread for the reason why I am not going to rewrite the lastpost URL.
I believe what he's saying (and I'm experiencing it also) - is that if you have a multiple page thread it doesn't seem to keep track of the proper amount of pages anymore.
IE: there is a thread with 63 replies on it on my forum right now - having 10 replies per page (if you are going by forum default) should net 7 pages - the forumdisplay only shows 5 total, and when you click on page 5 and load the thread the other 2 pages are visible then at the top of the thread.
I swear you discussed this earlier though - but I may have been reading something else.
Oddly enough though - my users are having no issues changing styles via the quick change box...

If it's not showing up in your plugin manager (which I have no idea why), then I can't offer you much more advice. I don't know the table structure of the plugin table offhand, but someone who does can offer you a query like:
SELECT pluginid FROM plugin WHERE name LIKE '%SEO%';
Which will give you the IDs of the plugins you want to delete. But the above query will not work as I don't know the fieldnames. If someone can provide that then I can offer assistance in removing it :)

@Dean C, I'm not sure I read this before in the thread. I just noticed now that when attempting to change a language inside a forum or thread the lang param is pushed to the end after the .html:
http://de.castlecops.com/forum/f3-hilfestellungfaq.html?langid=1
Therefore its not being parsed correctly by modrewrite.
This still a bug?
TIA

It's the same with any additional get parameters applied to the URL. They cannot be parsed using mod_rewrite. I think I may have a way around this, but i'm a little overloaded with work right now, so won't do for a little while :)

Fix for anyone running the beta. Replace the DC SEO vBulletin URL Rewrite (WOL) plugin with this content:
if(eregi("^f|forum([0-9]+)-(.*).html$", $filename, $fmatch))
{
$filename = 'forumdisplay.php';
$values['forumid'] = $fmatch[1];
}
if(eregi("^t|thread([0-9]+)-(.*).html$", $filename, $tmatch))
{
$filename = 'showthread.php';
$values['threadid'] = $tmatch[1];

The whole idea is to get keyword relevance in your URLs. Having it appear just as a HTML file would have very little advantage to you. So to answer your question, no.
The only configurable option in the new version will be whether to use t1-title.html or thread1-title.html :)

Couldnt get it to work either, I've sent you the .htaccess I was using. gone back to using the release for now.

I've had this problem with 3/4 of my testers now. I managed to fix it on one site but not the other two. I'll have to get stuck into the apache documentation as noticably you are using Apache1, and so is he :)

Has anyone had any problems with the rewrite not working towards the end of the page? Take a look at http://www.cigarsmokers.com. At the beginning of the third category (specifically the cigarsmokers.com cat) the rewrite just stops working.
The only thing I can think of is that the sub forum links right above the category are messing things up.
Aside from that, thanks for the great plug-in. I just upgraded to 3.5.1 from 3.0.7 and it sure beats the heck out of all the template modifications I was doing to accomplish basically the same thing.
Does anyone have an issue with server load going sky high with this mod?

Im starting to see results after about a month, you have to remember that search engines dont update straight away, click the following link then replace with your domain to see
Clicky (http://www.google.com.au/search?q=inurl:www.fuo-motorsports.com&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2005-09,GGGL:en&filter=0)
i may give it another shot then :squareeyed:
like i said, its a great idea. i do love the way it looks, but i get search bots on my site alot, and hadn't seen any results on google/yahoo/ or msn

Thanks for the plugin - it's very tasty.
Two queries / issues:
1 - Shortcuts ie. creating a forum that links to a site. If I put one of those in the plugin stops working completely.
2 - Thread tools - One of our moderators is reporting issues with thread tools ie. for merging threads etc. Is there anyway around this?

That's got to be the same issue I'm having. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?

If you wait for the next version it'll work correctly on german boards. Also as stated on several occasions in this thread already, I will not be rewriting the lastpost links on the first page. Search if you want the reason.

I have it installed... but I am having a problem... I think I have mod_rewrite enabled but it does not appear to be working properly.
Please PM me with info on setting it up if you can, server is running Fedora Core 4.
Thanks
What version of apache are you using bitblaster?

There are no apache issues with this version dan. That was just with the beta we tried on your forums (which will be the next publically available version).
Well still it could be an apache specific problem Dean ;)

I am running this plugin on my vb3.5.1 and users are driving me crazy with complaints that when they click last page it doesn't take them to the last page.
example:
http://www.theforumlounge.com/f14-shootin-the-breeze.html
DAK's Daily WTF pics
Trolling Pbase
Both of those do it. Any suggestions of what is wrong?
