I have advocated something similar for a while...I nicked the way XMB do it and have run my 3.0.7 board like this for some time:
http://www.bowlandcentral.com/forum
My method simply involved using a similar graphic but placed in a new column on the right hand side of the board. This does involve messing about with the conditionals for the mod column but it's not too much trouble.

Nice. If I want the same feature to be displayed for my subforums (once I am viewing a particular forum with the list if subforums), where should I add the code?

when click at any category, it will list only forums in that category, and it should show the "New Thread" icon.. could you add that?

Working on 3.5 RC2. Nice idea.
EDIT: I am getting better at codding. Ok, here is what i did to modify this to fit sub forums.
In the Forum Home Templates gorup find forumhome_subforumbit_post and below:
<img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_statusicon]/subforum_$forum[statusicon].gif" alt="" /> <a href="forumdisplay.php?$session[sessionurl]f=$forum[forumid]">$forum[title]</a>
Add this: <a href="newthread.php?do=newthread&f=$forum[forumid]"><img src="images/buttons/newthread-small.gif" border="0" alt="New Thread" /></a>

I like the idea of a seperate column for this mod.. how would I achieve a similar thing on VB 3.5 Gold? I am quite new to this mod game, my apologies for bringing this thread back up.

On second thought making this an in line image makes it slighlty more comestic on sub forums, and child forums:
<a href="newthread.php?do=newthread&f=$forum[forumid]"><img class="inlineimg" src="images/buttons/newthread-small.gif" border="0" alt="New Thread" /></a>

Nice. Why don't you actually make it in invision-style, with a small button aligned to the right?

In the template look up for the code with the image & link.
<if condition="$forum['link']"> <else /> the image and link code </if>
That would do the trick I think :)
