replace withe this:
$forum[forumid]forum_$forum[statusicon].gif

find on the template:

Good idea in theory, I just don't think I'd want to be creating 3 images for each subforum on my site. :p You could probably do the same thing with conditionals, 1 image, and CSS. (Alpha transparency, that's all I'm saying. ;))
