[HowTo] Optimize the Navigation bar
version 0.0.1 for Beta 6 of vBulletin (by Floris (xiphoid) info@vBulletin.nl)
DESCRIPTION: With this template modification you will quickly learn how to modify
and tweak the navigation bar to fit your site. This tweak will optimize the bar to
display the location and the quick links so they are easier to read and better looking.
DISCLAIMER: This template modification is written for vBulletin version 3.0.0 Beta 6.
It will (probably) not work on lower or higher versions. Any of these files may not
be translated and may only be distributed by me through the following web site(s):
http://www.vBulletin.nl/ and http://www.vBulletin.org.uk/ and http://www.vBulletin.org/
http://www.vBulletin.com/ or http://www.vBulletinTemplates.com/
SUPPORT: My time is limited and so is the support. I believe that this template
modification shows in a few simple steps where to look for what and please try to
learn from that, so you can quickly adjust it to your own personal needs.

Installation instructions, icons and screenshot are included in the .zip file.
Installed and liking very much :)
Had to remove the three vbnl references before the icons would show but no big deal. Also the page class was no good in my case as its transparent and showed up as a black bar on my site - no good with black text :D

I understand about the vbnl references, but that is just because the navbar function doesn't have stylevar in the global, so you can't use $stylevar[imagesfolder] .. I think I // (blahblah) put a comment about it in the .txt file.
I have updated the .zip file to reflect the changes, it now doens't have vbnl/ as a custom style dir listed, it uses images/icons and assumes the mod is applied to the default style.

I appriciate your reply, :)
I've been using this for nearly 6 days now and I just can't imagine going back to the standard bar. This has to be one of the best hacks I have ever installed, its so neat AND functional, a huge improvement on the standard - a definite must for including in a future version of vB :)

Maybe you installed it wrong? It seems to work fine for both of the above here at vBT :).
Floris

Ofcourse it works there, those pages eval the same navbar templates as the other pages in vbulletin.

Hey Xiphoid,
I just upgraded to beta7...should I just hard code all the image references or should I wait until you upgrade? ;)
Littlebit

nevermind https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/ I looked at it and it was all good. I just kept what was hardcoded before (just changes location) and made the $stylevar changes to the others. Still works nicely https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/
Does this hack work with beta 7 or does it require further hacking?

hmm some coding is changed in vb3 beta 7, you might want to update that.

I love this mod, not only does it make the board look nicer.. In vB3 there's alot more options in the nav bar and it gets reall squashed up on small fixed width forum skins. So it serves a good purpose. :)

As you can read in the first post, it is written for beta 6, not beta 7. Ofcourse there are some changes.
A new version will be presented with vb gamma/rc1 - which will include more tweaks and performance updates as well a few new cool fun things :P just wait.

Installed!
I made one change to one of the links for the new images to match it with the way beta7 calls images.
Instead of using this:
<a href="$vboptions[forumhome].php?$session[sessionurl]">
<img src="$stylevar[imagesfolder]/icons/icon_navbar_02.gif" alt="" border="0" align="top" /></a>
I used this:
<a href="$vboptions[forumhome].php?$session[sessionurl]">
<img src="$stylevar[imgdir_icon]/icon_navbar_02.gif" alt="" border="0" align="top" /></a>
in the SHOWTHREAD template.
Works prefectly. This is soooo much better than the default navbar.
