View Full Version : n00b Questions...
Hey, I'm sorta a n00b to vbb templates, but not coding and design. Does anyone know of a good place I can find a simple tutorial to give me a push off? How about some free templates that someone is willing to share. I won't actually use them, but rather compare and learn a bit. All I have done so far is install it, so don't yell at me. Thanks...
ight, I finally logged into the admin panel and started messin with that shit. I figured out a few things, but I would still appreciate any templates that someone would let me see the source for, I won't use it, but I learn extremely fast by viewing sources. Thanks.

There aren't really any tutorials on how to mess with your templates. You can ask questions here and we'll see if we can help you out. :)
for editing the templates offline, which files should i mess with?

All the actual template modifcations take place via the Admin CP, meaning they will have to be done online, unless of course you mean the design.

if you mean you'd like to know which templates affect which segments of the pages, you can do 1 of 2 things.
1. turn on the templates names in the options and then check the page source of various pages as you surf through your forum. that will give you a good idea of what goes where.
2. mess around like crazy. that's what i did, and it was the best way to learn. i applied a ton of hacks and by the time i was done, i knew where things were, and that made it easier to modify the site then.
helps if you have quite a bit of html knowledge, so you're not lost in the code.
good luck.

Usually the group name the templates are in help you identify what part of the vB they edit. The templates in the group edit a specific place on that page. Like in the forumhome templates, forumhome_loggedinusers messes around with the Who's Online tables when people are logged in. :)
