View Full Version : Can't get the "Install this hack" to work

I've entered my info correctly i.e. when I click the link to my forum in my Members section it brings it up fine.
I am liscensed, but when I try to install a hack, it appears as things go well, as the page refreshes and then I get the option to uninstall the hack, however no functionality is ever present on the site. Usually I have to have my friend manually edit the files in order to make it work.
Currently I am trying to get the Warning system hack to work, and I was in the process of editing it manually, but it's just TOO much to do. What am I doing wrong as far as getting the hacks to work correctly? I don't have ImpEx installed, but I can have my friend install that if that is needed.
Sorry if this isnt the correct forum, I'm new to this vB stuff and any help is most appreciated.
Thanks.
Andreas

The Button "Install this Hack" is only meant to keep track of installations, eg. you will be marked as having this hack installed, the auther can send an update-notification and such.
But of course you must install the hack yourself (manually, using the provided installer, etc.) :)
Btw.: Moved to Site Feedback, I think it fits better there.
Wouldn't it be magical though?
Click a button on a website and hundreds of lines of php code are added/altered, images are transferred, templates modified, and database queries run....
All from clicking Install on vb.org.

This was confusing for me when I was a competle newbie. I think something should be done to make this a bit mroe clear to the new guys.

Maybe the button should say "Mark This Hack as Installed" instead.

or simply "Tell the author that you installed his hack and you'll be happy to receive updates when he do so..."
we never have enough docs!

Maybe the button should say "Mark This Hack as Installed" instead.as I have said in several previous threads on the same subject - simply changed it from "Install" to "Installed".

It's a gif image. Mmm... something like "I installed this" or "I uninstalled this" , or "Add to Installed List" would be good I think. :)
I don't know who's got the PSDs of the buttons here... I'll find out and see if we can change it.

you're joking... right? No, I'm not. Looking at the path to those images I would guess that they are only in some styles - there are no buttons in the one I have always used (Stylish Green).

in the new postbit for hacks it's a link ;)Exactly. :)
Should I also take screenshots? ;)Well I nearly said yes - but after searching the page source I found the button, tucked away below the main hack post, next to the thread rating. I have never noticed it there, and always thought the link next to the actual files is all there was. :)

before we did the new design for hacks, there was just that button above the thread ;)

It's a gif image. Mmm... something like "I installed this" or "I uninstalled this" , or "Add to Installed List" would be good I think. :)Yes! Exactly!
The first day I was browsing this site (awesome site by the way, Admins), I was just amazed that a single button could somehow initiate me giving permissions to do the installation on my server.
I was thinking of 1,000,000 questions, like "How are you going to auto-FTP the bits to my server?" etc.
After all, "Install this hack" is a statement that is a directive, not a past tense thing.
So I got up the courage to click the button. And then... ::depressing music theme:: nothing happened.
THEN I felt very very lame :surprised:
I bet it happens a lot but no one likes to admit it :)

Hehe yeah, loooong time ago when I registered I thought the same. I knew nothing about web-development, servers or programming or in fact the web back then :D!

@Dean C
We were all newbies ... once upon a time :)
Approx. 2 years ago I didn't know anything about PHP and such.
