View Full Version : SEO - Forum Specific Keyword Meta Tags for vBulletin 3
Quarterbore

Attached is a MOD that allows custom META keywords to be added to vBulletin forums or the threads under a specific forum.
Keywords are entered in the Admin Control Panel just as the standard vBulletin allows you to add a description. If no forum specific keywords are added vBulletin will use the default vBulletin keywords.
It has been fun making this and I have it running on a forum I have up and running. I will post a link soon but my DNS is not resolved completely...
I have added a screenshot that shows the AdminCP where you would enter the keywords.
Enjoy My very first MOD :rambo:

Okay, so what makes this different that the default ones?
<not meaning to sound rude, just confused>

Default your entire forum and all threads have exactly the same keywords. Now, most search engines don't put a lot on the keywords but there are a few that do... This mod provides a way for you to target specific keywords for a specific forum...

Cool. Not sure I would use it, I'm lazy. But it sounds like something people will want.

B/c it's easy to fake. Most go by IBLs / relevancy / anchor text of IBL / keyword density / etc. etc.

I believe that translated you are saying that if I was to extend this to work with the archive that the mod would be even better... is that what you tried to say :ermm:
Good point... I didn't look into changing the archive but I will when I get a chance... I don't know how easy or hard this will be to do with the archive...?

I haven't done this with my vb yet, though Colinf had made something similar for me.
I CAN SAY that it worked very well on my ubbt sites.
It may not be the adding of the related keywords (though it can't hurt), but IMO the matching title and description to the content of the thread makes a significant enough difference to make it worthwhile.

Hello,
Well I really like the idea of the mod here and feel it can give us the edge in getting many of our pages indexed by the search engines.
I have one request though.
Can you code it to where the Title of each thread would be inserted in the header with <h1> tags?
Heres an example page that I believe is using you mod. His thread title is: KeyHunt back up, and better than ever!!! (if this title was using <h1> tag it would be great.
http://www.keyhunt.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2369
The header on this thread would be <h1>SEO - Forum Specific Keyword Meta Tags for vBulletin </h1>
This would add that extra punch to get picked up and rank well for many titles.
I normally use this for my header tags: <h1><font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Your Heading Goes Here</font></h1>
We would also need a way to set the font smaller in this header tag.
Any ideas? Can this be done?
Thank you,
Greg

I need some time to document the changes but see if what I did with my Archive page here and see if that is what you had in mind...
http://www.mustangreview.com/forums/archive/index.php/
Note: The archive code is a very different kind of hack but you will notice I got the basics working... I got burried with other projects so I never finished working on that part of this... but the description in this is a little more complicated to get working...
There is no doubt that this has helped...
You can also see it working on my other forum here:

This is a discussion forum powered by vBulletin. To find out about vBulletin, go to http://www.vbulletin.com/ .
there is your keywords and description that shows up when I view your page info, so it isn't working for the archive.

well, I thought this was to customize the forum description and keywords to fit the specific forums....
is this not the case?

Correct, the main forums work fine if you look at the forums (Quarterbore.net) ... I thought the question Treasure Quest was asking above was in regards to getting the forum title to show up in <h1> header tags... That is what I am doing in my archives... Two different problems....
Like I said above, I have not spent the time to work out the archive hack needed to replace the description and keywords in the archive (yet)... Of cource, perhaps I didn't understand what was being asked and perhaps he meant to include this <h1> instide an HTML Head tag but I fail to see how that is good coding?

Thanks for the nice hack, this hack will work great for the first time (first few weeks) laster create problems) this is my personal assumption please confirm.
EXCELLENT HACK! A+
I was having problems with my GoogleAdsense, however with this hack I can target specific adverts in their subject forum. Almost too perfect! Now to implement a sexy 'built-in" system to the forums and mod a bunch of keywords.
I will post my success or otherwise in a few weeks.
Great hack. I tried to install it on my boards but since I have VBadvanced it is interferring with the tag generation. Is there any chance you can do a work around for this. I would hate to have to remove VBadvanced.
Also the idea for thread title being included in <h1></h1> tags is awesome. It would add an additional pow to this mod.
Jaks :)

any way to get this done while using vba? On vba's site someone is offering something that works, but it won't allow for adding of specific title/meta data, it just pulls it from the post title and post content.
I need to be able to set it how I want it. Anyone?

Has this been ported to 3.6.x? I did a search and couldn't find it. It'd be very useful for those who can't or don't want to use Zoints SEO.
