At http://www.geoexpat.com/, the webmaster is able to pull in the "Latest Topics" in the middle column. Doesn't appear to be using any kind of vbportal.

Looks like he added vBadvanced content, there is a thread on how to do it either here or over there. Was thinking of putting the left column on all pages.
