Hi there,
I am using my forum to cross post and link all product reviews from my ranking sites (full list at the footer of the site)...
The forum is located at www.talkshack.com.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Get rid of the fake IE security bar.

its not a security bar - its just an incentive for people to sign up, once you sign up you won't see the top bar anymore.
It is quite a common addon to vb forums all over the place.

Because it's common doesn't make it right. The pixel font is common and I have yet to see a justifiable use of it. It is deceptive to the user to simulate genuine security errors when in fact you are just trying to make them sign up.

thats a good point - what would you suggest then to make an incentive to get people to sign up instead of just browsing?

I would have a look in the Modification Hints and Tips forum, there are some great tutorials in there on ethical ways of getting people to join and become active. It did wonders for me, have a look :)

I dont see anything unethical in it. Matter of fact of the the writers of one of those great tutorials uses it. I am too tired and lazy to find it for you.

I used it for a little while too but then decided to take some time and try to gain members through informing them instead and it's been very successful. It's all a matter of choice, I don't blame anyone for using that mod, I just think that nagging people into joining isn't a route I care to take. :)

You sound like you feel guilty for those that *have* to sign up at your site... The plain fact of the matter is that they (guests) should feel guilty for not signing up after you paid a bunch of money and did all of that programming to bring the information they are looking at or using.

I don't use it myself but I don't see anything at all wrong with it. It's a lot smaller intrusion than the hack I use to entice people and everyone raves about it.

Do not use it. Never, ever, ever fake a component of the system that appears outside of the viewport.
