View Full Version : multi vB, with a multi database layer!

I have been working on this for a while, and now I have it updated for 3.0.7 I will releasing it here. It will be last mod for vB as all my clients have switch to other forum software.
What does this do....
This allows anyone to run multi instances of vBulletin using (1) database, allowing to keep posts and topics and everything else related to each install separate. The ability to do individual backups and reinstalls. The ability to manage multi forum installs from a single control panel. Users can share account information across the forum installs and also have multi aliases if the administrator allows.
It also comes with a wonderful database layer supporting MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle right out of the box. After I release it in a few days, if someone would like to maintain it as in keeping it updated I will pass to them my detailed cvs files that will make it easy to update and maintain.

Are you able to limit the functions in this mod? For example I would be interested in using the same member database on each forum, but would like to keep posts different.

Didn't vbhosting.com do something like that and didn't they get shut down by Jelsoft? I've noticed that in the first part of the licence agreement,
vBulletin licence grants you the right to run one instance (a single installation) of the Software on one web server and one web site for each licence purchased. Each licence may power one instance of the Software on one domain. For each installed instance of the Software, a separate licence is required. Modifications to the software or database to circumvent the one-license-one-board rule are prohibited. , they've added the "(a single installation)" and "Modifications to the software or database to circumvent the one-license-one-board rule are prohibited. " parts since I bought my licence.

Yes you can do that, it highly configurable. You can keep each install separate or you can mix installs....
example.... (forum installs)
1. development forum (linux)
2. development forum (windows)
3. Mom's helping other mom's
4. Medical forum
5. Child development
1, 2 share user information but topics and post are kept separate!
3, 5 does the same thing as 1 and 2, but they can share PM(s) if they want
4. does not share anything...
This all done using (1) database, no extra tables, no extra queries! If you use Oracle or MSSQL there are few less queries too!

If Jelsoft don't allow this to be released that would be BEYOND crap. It should already be a feature FFS!

Which means (correct me if I am wrong) that it should be ok as long as you buy seperate licenses.
2 possible options you can 'create' shared user database:
Option 1: 1 huge forum where you hide / show your sub-forums depending on your domains. This also requires seperate licenses
Option 2: Multiple forums *installs*, 1 user database. Also requires seperate licenses but IMO better and cleaner than hiding / showing sub forums.
Can't wait to see it Sonia, thanks.

I honestly wrote vBulletin about this and never got a reply to both messages I sent them. When I wrote them I went into great detail about this mod and requested that I be allowing to release it here! I don't see where it will violate anything as long as you pay for the number of forums you are installing!
I should have this ready with help files the day after tomorrow the latest! You will need to have Perl to convert your vBulletin scripts, it takes only 30 seconds max! It converts everything including the install files! Please don't ask me to make it work where you have mods already in your scripts because I can't and I will not. vBulletin 3.0.7 downloaded file will convert only!
I also have a list of 20 or so mods that I have already converted that work wonderful with this. They are installed separately! One of the big ones is uCash & uShop, my new Weather system Version 4, vBdate, vBgreetings! Overall, mods are easy to convert to use the new database storing options.

Well if Jelsoft says its not allowed to be relesed on vb.org. That doesn't stop you from releasing it on other unoffical vbhacks website. My site has many hacks released that vb.org will not allow, and it doesn't violate the TOS to create your own hack and share it else where. Keep that in mind, cause from what i can read. Jellysoft will not allow this to be released. And if you did they will just trash the thread and tell everyone that there laywers are looking into it to see if it violates the TOS and they will never get back to you about it. vBhosting for example.

The problem, LiveWire, is that as far as I can tell, it actually violates the License Agreement, and that why-not and anyone that uses this could actually get their license revoked for this.

Yes, this mod requires separate active licenses for each "virtual" forum.

But you see, it will just be an on-going debate weather or not it violates. If this is anything like the vBhosting hack, then it will not violate the TOS. Jelsoft cant revoke someones license for using the vBhosting hack as they havn't even comfirmed if it does. Otherwise alot of legit boards i know will be getting screwed.
Why should the mod be pulled. It is not illegal nor doesnt violate anything.
It is merely a tool that Sonia is kind enough to plan to release ( I am sure MANY have been waiting for something like this....look at the number of requests in the past for this. ) and is probably something that has been difficult to code, for aiding those who have legit multiple licenses to make use of.
Remember, the tool is legit, how people use it should not be of consequence to the tool.
I support Sonia in releasing this, I'm sure it will come in handy for many. In fact, imho Jelsoft owes her one, when she releases this.

To my knowledge, vBHosting violates the license.
If some one uses a hack to violate the license, then we absolutely can revoke their license. I believe it is our policy to not encourage such violations by not allowing such hacks to be published on www.vbulletin.com or www.vbulletin.org. I myself made a template mod for running multiple instances on one installation, but Kier wouldn't let me publish it even with a warning about needing multiple licenses.

Well i definately neeed this now, even if it takes someone to write the software for me, so come on VB Team surely you are able to release this under some supervision without clamming up and deleting this thread? Obvioulsy you can do what you like, but if you are that scared of losing registrations and license fees from people using it instead of registering multiple boards with your, then how about this - I WONT renew my registration, there you've lost one already - oh and the other one I was going to purchase for the other forum.
Anyway I have asked Sonia if i can use her software, but no response as yet. What makes me really wary is the deleting of threads like this, this is obviously a fundamental feature for most users, its not like someone is asking for something trivial, this is fundamental community/information sharing and management tool.
Why dont you just allow stuff like this to be released under supervision - you might lose a few registration licenses with people abusing it - but get a deal with the author that she wont publish this on other sites and then incorporate a dongle into the next release of VB to ensure that NOONE other than registered VB users can use it, viola your license count will keep increasing and you will have a happy community.
it that too much to ask? Otherwise i might just go on to the other sites and find a hack? or worse still use some other forum software?

Hello Paul,
Thank you for your interest in vBulletin Modification from vBulletin.org. I would like to clear something up here. Although this Board is hosted by Jelsoft and we have a plugin for determining the Jelsoft License status of our members, this Board and it Staff is not related to Jelsoft, nor do we get paid for our work here. As you see vBulletin.org have no interest in selling 1 license more or less. I hope that you see that you are addressing your complaint to the wrong people, at the wrong board.
Sonia is also a volunteer, and she might reply or answer to threads or PM's when she have time for it. You can not make any claims on out volenteer Staff.
I hope that you can understand our position. If you want to discuss this further i suggest you contact Jelsoft through the appropriate channels.
Thank you

What claims was I making? Sonia is my hero at the moment, if she can manage to publish something that has obviously been of use to her and would be of great use to me then great, i dont *expect* her to do it if thats what you mean. I just stated that she hadnt contacted me, i wasnt moaning about it.
I hope that you can understand our position. If you want to discuss this further i suggest you contact Jelsoft through the appropriate channels.
Thank you
A number of people including Sonia have tried this but not got any response (but this has been explained by a VB Team member in this thread). BUT you have some VBTeam members commeting on the topics in this thread in this forum. I have followed Jakeman's link to the post in the Vbulletin.com forum re: license but this thread is closed. Thats why I posted my comments here, I hope you understand.
But as you suggested I will copy and paste my post into a new post in the vbulletin.com forum.

There are two similar mods to this, I can't remember the naming of the other one nor find it but I didn't spend an hour searching just a few minutes so if you search the site here and use Google/Bing/Yahoo you might just run into it ;).
