I'm planning to move to vBulletin (being sick and tired of phpBB vulnerabilities), but before that, I need to know if vBulletin offers me two features:

1. can i programatically register new users?
2. can i programatically feed the forum with posts?

I want a tight integration with the actual site. For example, when a user registers on the site, he/she should be registered on vBulletin, too. Also, I want that users can post comments on articles, comments that should appear as topics on the forum.

Thanks.

1. That can be done, but it will need a hack (modification).
2. Standard vBulletin can use RSS feeds, there are also other hacks around that make automatic posts.

About the integration is more difficult to answer whitout knowing more about your current situation.

I have done that kind of mods for phpBB, but the code is so ugly in phpBB that every time i need to update i spend too much time doing it. And I have several forums to update...

It would be great to have some kind of "web service" or plugin that does this actions.

If I get the one year subscription, do I get the PHP sources? Can I use them to find out if vBulletin is suitable for my needs? I would like to try the cheapest version before investing in several vBulletin licences.

All license options will allow you to downlaod the vBulletin source code.

Best advise would be to get an owned liscence or upgrade within thier alloted time frame since its cheaper for you over the long run that way. I am sure you will enjoy vb. :)
