View Full Version : cinq's vbGlossary Hack
Here's some screenshots of my yet-to-be-released vbGlossary hack after some people contacted wanting to see it in action.
I don't have it on a live site at the moment, so these screenshots will have to do for now.
Suggestions are welcome. :)
*Note: All terms in the screenshots taken from some genome site for illustration purposes only :)

Very nice and would work great on another project if I ever get that re-started.
Maybe this would be too difficult but would it be possible to add custom gollasary fields? I ask this because I was specifically thinking about catagories....
Lets say you have an medical site. You could have all the terms just as they are but if theres a custom field where you could add in if the term relates to a surgery, anastecia, etc. Or a book site, you could mark add which book the term is from in one custom field and say good guys or bad guys in another custom field.
Hope that made sense.
And how would 'flagging' them show in the front end display ?

I assume it would work like the $post[fieldx] does and users could specify where they want it to show up in the templates?
As a default, maybe it their is a custom field, it would generate the html for a new column (like how vb can turn on / off the moderator panel)?
I guess to make it easy, I'd just put the first one as a default in the description?
What do you think?

Fantastic Cinq !! i am definitely looking forward to this hack... i have a makeshift glossary made from webtemplates hack but a glossary in such an organised manner would be awesome for my forum... when its coming out ? :pirate: :)
Custom fields is additional work but something I will have to read up more on to be able to implement them in all my hacks. :)

Cinq you are working pretty good I think :) Everyday you are adding some new hack to your signature :)
When are you going to pass some information for them :P
Also when are you going to decide to release the hacks for free or paid .

Chiq, do you put stand alone versions of this stuff on your sites or do you stay tied to vB.
My recent trend is to do stand alones to increase the site's vesatility and try to be more SEO, I love a buzz word, friendly.
What's your take on that?

Very likely tied to vb. I'd probably die if I had to support another general audience as well. Besides ain't the vb crowd just grand ? :p
Frankly, to me all these SEO stuff, site marketing/promotion, doesn't really faze me. I ain't out to make millions on the internet (yes, I've always felt it was all about the molah), I've got my regular job to help me with that. :)
To each his own though, I guess. ;)

Yeah, well this is my job. :D So I have to look at the profit end somewhere. School for kids is expensive!
Anywho, I just got to thinking that all of my eggs should not be in any one basket. Even with an owned license, if jelsoft gets on the ball and fixes all the crap URLS that are in the product, all these things could be obsolete, so I'm going for more options beyond the forum I can count on. (ok, I won't hold my breath)
I'm not giving up on forums, just trying to make them be more then forums. Nothing I added in needs any security, it's to add content for the public, so it's an effort in bloated code. vBGarage is an example, having to go through global.php to show each thumbnail sucks, when I get that worked out, I may be in better spirtis about the whole thing.
Cheers, as always, nice chatting with ya.

Yep, everything I code, is with the sole desire to create a site more of a site, in the traditional sense.
I personally feel too many people buy a license, throw it up on the server and say they have a site. I still like 'whole sites', with all round content, that isn't just all about SEO and Adsense and top placings in search engines etc. Imho, at the end of the day, it should always be about your targetted audience, what they come to your site for - i.e its content.
Too many webmasters take too much time on SEO but leave the content out of the picture. I aim to let my hacks help vbulletin users make it easier and more efficient to add more content to their sites, outside their forums, but at the same time everything is integrated nicely with their boards.
I once even had the grand idea of making vbCMS, but eventually gave that idea up because I knew it would be out of my league, in terms of both time I can devote to such a project, as well as the essential lack of coding skills. But I guess the hacks I am currently making and releasing will still help many webmasters achieve better sites.
vbGarage is one such hack too, and I certainly hope you will carry on development of it. I would be more than willing to offer any coding help to keep that going, help's just a holler away :D

I got stale on the vbg code. Dropping it was the best thing I could do. I had no reason to be creative today and suddenly just opened the editor and fixed the code to do what I had intended like second nature. I was trying to hard I guess.
I too think those extensions are necessary to a site. For me the thing was break outside the box. Then you point out your tools let the users do the work. So it's got to be a balance apparently of the tools available on a particular site being used to your advantage too.
Ok, i got a demo up and should be releasing it soon on my site as well.

Feel free to add terms to the glossary that's related to forum administration/webmastering, save me the trouble of populating it myself :D
In case anyone is interested, I just released v2 (http://www.vbarticles.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62) :)

I would like to delete this entirely from my board.
I have managed to delete the phrases but still appears in the admin cp under settings.
