View Full Version : Private Threads INSTEAD of PM's
Is it just me, or is the current PM system annoying. When replying it turns into a quote mess.
I post on some infopop boards, and they have a much better function called "Private Topics."
Basically its like each member has their own forum in their PM area. You can send a message to somebody, and if they accept it, then both users have the thread in their PM area. The threads work as normal threads and only those users can see them. When replying, it adds a post underneath, as usual, and moves the topic to the top of your list, just like a forum.
It is 100X better than vb's system. I remember seeing something like this here, but I think it was for VB2?
Does anybody else think this is better than PM's? I would love to see something like this for VB3 to completely replace the current private message system.

Cool. Can you please give me a link to the hack?
I don't have a link to it. I think it existed at one point for VB2, but I am requesting it now for VB3. Basically it would be cool to have private messaging be like the way infopop does it, as I described above.
If someone wants to do this I'm sure there are MANY people who would like it, as it would be much more organized than the current PM system.

wooooow this is very good hack and what is infopop could u put a link here so we can see it there ?
I will try to get a screenshot of it. I don't know how hard this would be. I may even attempt it myself but I would probably end up biting off more than I can chew.. :(

I have asked for this before. Its wonderful. Having used Infopop for 6 years and recently came here its something very much missed. I love VB but this use of private topics was much better.
Basically
You add people to a Buddy list, as many as you want.
You then choose 'Private Topic'
You choose people from your Buddy list you want to invite - (between 1 and many)
You can specify which users you invite can post or just read
You get notifed by e-mail when someone replies
Basically as stated its a Private discussion but in a forum threaded format.
It used to be great for mod discussions or discussions between certain users. I used it all the time. If say there was a fight between two members I would get them both in and faciltate a private thread discussion to resolve it.
But the users loved it. Much much better than the current private message

Isn't there such a hack for vB? :(((((((( They should make it.

There is a private threads hack somewhere on the forum.
There is also a hack to control the quotes in PM's here > https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=73541
:)
Those just aren't the same though. Those create private threads within public forums. And the quote's one is good but again, just not the same.
PamelaE knows what I mean. I'm sure we aren't the only ones who have used Infopop's Private Topic function and it unfortunately is just a ton better than VB's PM system.
Don't confuse what I am saying though. I LOVE VB and personally would never switch to Infopop, but their PT feature blows our PM feature out of the water. That's the only part I like better about them.
Would be cool if somebody who has used them and agrees with us on this wants to take this on. I'm sure you would get a TON of installs! :) I would code it, but really like I said I don't think I would know half of what is needed to take on such a project. :(

this is retarded the point of pm's is so there is are no 2 way thread conversations>_> some people just love reinventing the wheel dont they... seriously the pm format is great except that reply grouping and a gmail type system would be cool;)

How can you guys possibly like the current PM format???Because we do. :p
I liked the old ubb format myself, someone released a hack for vB2 that modified pm's to work like this. The vB stock system just gets out of hand when you have multiple replies on the same topic, its hard to find exactly what you are looking for and even harder to follow the convo from start to finish.
Just wanted to bring this back up in case other people are getting sick of the quotes within quotes. I wish vB would just change the PM feature alltogether to be like GMail or anything better than the current system.

I saw that the private thread hack listed above is no longer supported. Is someone working on a similar add in for v3.5?

What happened to the other people that wanted this modification?
Did you find something else that did the same thing?

This is awsome but I don't think a hack will ever be capable of totally imitating the infopop's built in feature :( especially without file edits :(

I'd love a private threads hack. Not so much the private forums - but being able to post a private thread on a main forum would be great.

A genius is not necessary here (Of course, I am a genius, but that doesn't matter ;))... Alright, I'll do it.

I agree that this hack would be very nice.
Just to add some more input to convince Psionic Vision he isn't making a mistake.

Too late broo, I'm already on it :D
Hmm, so how should this be? No private messaging system, but ability to create private threads in a PM forum, or no private threads, but PMs arranged in threads, like in Gmail?

I had been pondering that myself. Which do you think would be most appropriate for communicating with mutiple users?
I have gmail but I've never used it to email numerous people so I'm not sure if their "threaded" system would be confusing or not.

I am writing a pretty comprehensive private threads product...I'll post it when I'm done. It is my first vBulletin module but so far it has been smooth sailing. My intent is to build a basic version to get it up quickly and test out the theory behind it and then extend it.
I hope to have something to post in a few days.

Did you intend for it to be a private thread for just two people?

So which way are you going to code it:
[1]No private messaging system, but ability to create private threads in a PM forum
[2]no private threads, but PMs arranged in threads, like in Gmail?
