View Full Version : Any way to sort a list of sub-forums alphabetically?

I've got a bunch of forums relating to music bands and artists. The forum layout looks like this:
Bands and Artists (category, no posting)
--A (category, no posting)
----A Perfect Circle (forum with posts)
----Alice in Chains
----Amos, Tori
--B
----Bet you get the idea by now
----etc.
--C
--etc.
Right now, the artists are all displayed correctly, because I created the forums in alphabetical order. If I want to add another "A" artist, I would need to reorder ALL the other forums after it in that letter's category.
I know that you can make threads within a forum display alphabetically, is there a way to do this with forums in a category?
Thanks for ANY help!

It defaults to alphabetical if the forum has the same order #.
Using your example:
Bands and Artists (category, no posting) 1
--A (category, no posting) 1
----A Perfect Circle (forum with posts) 1
----Alice in Chains 1
----Amos, Tori 1
--B 2
----Bet you get the idea by now 1
----etc. 1
--C 3
--etc. 1

That is the way that I have the forums set up, but they're not displayed alphabetically.... I added a new band in the "A" forum (Annihilator) and it shows at the bottom of all the "A" bands.

you set the order as reeve of shinra described..what ever you have set as 1, shows as the first in the order, followed by the one you set as 2 and etc.
So:
Cat 1
-Forum 1
--sub 1
--sub 2
-Forum 2
--sub 1
and so on

Yeah, I understand how the numbering works....but there are anywhere from 20 to 50 subforums under each letter, with more being added constantly. Even if I went with a good old BASIC numbering scheme (multiples of 10 so I can fit things in between) it would break down eventually. It would be nice to just be able to say "Sort these forums alphabetically" and be done with it.

Me too. I have loads of little forums each one attached to my members' work in different topics. Alphabetical sorting not there is a big surprise and unhelpful.
Usually lists in a db default to alpha and you can override to numeric or vice versa. These don't seem to have any sort order except how recently the forum was started up.
As the guy says in a large number of items manual numeric (as it is now) breaks down prety messily.

I desperately need this, too. I run a home exchange forum, and it's essential that my members can sort through the message boards alphabetically.

There should be an SQL query to sort subforums like this. I actually need this too, so if you find something guys just drop me a PM.

NuWiki software creates an alphabetical list
You can disable its wiki functionality to just use it for the main page alphabetical list.
Might not be what you are looking for, but useful IMHO

Check out sorky's sub forum manager (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=181939). He managed to code this.
