Choose the forums for new Posts?

I want divide my new posts on 3 forum ranges:

music forums, real world and offtopics, rss feeds...it´s would be also okay to tile it to new posts on category x, new poosts on category xy...

A other guy, which using phpbb board using the phpbb hack: glance to tile the newest entrys to 2 varios overviews

My solution to a similar problem was

Putting several searches on one page will be difficult, however, the capability to search for new posts in a forum and it's children is already in stock vB. Just add &f= then the ID of the catagory to search in to the end of the find new posts URL.
