View Full Version : Define US Zip Code for Member Profile
It would be great if, when a user supplied their zip code in an extra profile field, the zip code could be translated into the actual city and state of that area which would be displayed in the user's profile page.

I'm not expert on databases, but I think you'd need another database table for that... one that stores zip codes and it's corresponding city and state.
Or you'll need one of those longitude/latitude programs/databases that figures it out.
Someone might have either already, but I would imagine they are pretty expensive to buy.

if someone could provide all zipcodes of cities in the US, that would make it easier. ;)

You do know there are like 44,000 zip codes in the US? :nervous:
It also changes A LOT monthly. I only know because we have a database like this at my job, and changes are CONSTANT (they have 4-person department that manages this).

The link I posted is an API provided by the post office, which I must assume updates their database regularly :D
Depending on how many people register on your site daily, it wouldn't be a huge problem to hit some other database to get the info for the city and then store the city in the database.
But my question is this: Why not just have the user enter their city? They know what city they live in. ;)

If I joined a site and found they used my info to provide more info about me I'd be annoyed.
I'm wondering the point of this and how it would affect privacy issues? I mean even if a savey person could find out on their own, would users appreciate this and shouldn't the use of such things be op in and clearly stated in policies?
Just curious.
