View Full Version : Trying to create a fully integrated vB image gallery for vB 2.x....

Well.. I've spent 3 hours searching for this mod... couldn't find it.. I only found requests and requests... so, I thought I might give this a shot. I need it, and it will help a LOT of people. The problem is, I do NOT have enough php knowledge to do this by myself... so, here I am.. requesting HELP (not the hack.. I'll try to do this and have the satisfaction of creating this ALMOST by my own.. lol)..
sooo.. let's get started.. first of all, the features I want to add:
Features:
Add image form on non vB page which will create a thumb of the pic.
After adding an image through that form, create a thread with the image at the top and the author's comments below it.
A Non-vB page for each ARTIST with thumbs of their images, number of comments and averagee rating. This page would be Paginated.
On the forum designated for being the gallery I want to change the forumdisplay. I want to create a table of 3 columns and 3 rows, so it can display 9 threads, which are actually photos. On each of this cells I want the thumb to appear and just below it the thread title. As this seems to be the hardest thing to do, I think this can be optional.. but would be kool.
On the user profile, just like here at vB.org, I want to have a list of each user's submissions. No thumbs here, just text links.
Again, just like here at vB.org, I want to have the first post as a "Sticky" on every page of the thread. With a thumb of the image at the right side of the post.
Size and space limiations. Customized at the ACP.
I guess that's all, if I think of anything else, I'll post it...
I think I've seen some hacks that do some of the stuff I want (like the first post as stickky.. I think chen did something like that before... have to search).. but I'll have to develop a lot of script and code...
So.. what I'm requesting is some guru help. Someone to work along with and that can help me out, via MSN, AIM or through here... I think I have some ideas on how to do some of the stuff above.. I'll be posting if I see someone's looking forward to this.. I hope someone does...
Regards.. and..
LONG LIVE vB 2.x!!!!

yes, I saw that.. but it doesn't feature's everything I want... and installing it would mean ANOTHER place to design (change layouts)... what I want is to integrate it completely with vB. All i'm asking for is help, since I'm new at PHP

Good luck on a long project.
Your going to be htiting alot of brick walls, vB2 is very java centric and it would be simplier for you to learn vB3's coding style and php at the same time and code a gallery for vB3.

probably.. but I don't like vB 3.0.. it has LOTS and LOTS of features... that I won't ever use.. even vB 2.x has lots of features I'll never or rearely use.. Also, vB3 tables and all that scripting it has.. I don't know.. I just don't like it.. and I've found vB2.x to run faster than 3.0 .. so I'm sticking with it.. aaanyway.. I'll give it a shot.. but seriously, I'll need help.. I'll start later today and post here my very first problem :P...

Hmm, I dont see how vB3 runs slower, but I've noticed already that you want a feature that vB3 has, cutting long urls, (standard feature) and there is a paid script that will have an awsomely intergrated gallery.
the coding in vB3 is so much more easy to read and follow, but yes it is abit harder at points.
The power of vB3 compels you to upgrade ;P

lol, well, here's a list of what I didn't like about vB3 (things I remember.. it's been a while since I last saw it... :P)
* First of all (And probably the most annoying one): The goddamn navbar and welcome pannel... I HATTED THAT THING. When I first saw it I said "God.. that looks ugly.. it'll be need some modification).. but modyfing the damn thing was HARD!... I couldn't modify it though (can't remember why)... awful thing...
* The "pop-up windows" thing. Like when you click on a username or on the search button, a little window appears.. that thing slowed my computer (it's crappy, I know.. but still it's annoying and it doesn't happen on vB2.x) and again, when I tried to modify it, I was unable (still can't remember why...)
* On the acp, when I was changing templates, it had WAY more colour settings than on vB2.x .. that means,a WHOLE LOTTA WORK...
*ACP taked AGES to load on my 56kbps modem (that gladly is gone.. I'm on 128kbps.. not such a big jump.. but hey, it's better than 56kbps.. :P) since it had lots, lots and LOTS of comments on every single template and colour to modify. This is great for the newbies, but as I already knew what does what, it was pretty annoying....
*As I said above, it runed slower than vB2.x
*When it was released, I had an already moded vB2.x forum, and vB3 didn't have many hacks by the time.. so I decided to stick with vB2.x.
I guess that's all I can recall.. but it was mostly because I felt very uncomfortable at the ACP an when organizing/modding/designing vB3 ....
*sits and waits not to be banned for ever.. XD*

1. navbars not hard to work with if you understand some html
2. you can turn them off with one click on the admincpo
3. Actually if yhou upgrade all the standard settings come over for the most part, more colors just means better options to set things, if yolu need some help your talking to the master ;)
4. ACP has never taken that long for me to loaad even when i was on the road and using 28.8 dailup
5. Dunno how, if you set a few options loading times should be way way way faster than vB2 is even capale of.
6. There are alot of hacks now ;)
Well I can only try to presuade you to upgrading.
template conditionals are a godsend :D

lol, I think I didn't look too much at the features.. still I don't like it :P... I've already designed my vB2 (it took me a while.. and I'm not yet finished.. postibt and forumbits to edit.. and that's it ;)) and it's haked too... the ONLY reason I would upgrade is a very BIG security hole on vB2 that on vB3 would be fixed.. but I guess that, if there's any hole on vB2, it's not very harmful.. hey, that's what I pay for, uh? :P.. a secure script ;)

vB3 is way more secure. but since your stuck on it I will decline to comment further, good luck with your board :)
