View Full Version : Embedded media player in post

This is my first mod for VB, I personally need it on my site because it's focus is MP3's, it may be able to be customized for other uses I would think. What it does is embeds Windows Media Player into the body of the post (as well as the regular attachment) using bbcode and plays the attached MP3 file. What this does upon completing the upload is allows the user to copy and paste the URL to the attached file if they choose.

Also, since this bbcode is the Windows Media Player it may also be able to play .avi, .wmv, .mpg etc. So to broaden this you can change the tag to something else like for example.

There is no option to secure this to specific groups, however you can use Princeton's Allow Group to Read Titles / Not Content (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=60178) modification as an alternative.

Better template formatting, also maybe add a javascript function so that a user can click to add the line of code to the post.

If you find this useful please Click Install (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/vborg_miscactions.php?do=installhack&threadid=72162)

Update: Added an option to allow only certain groups to add the option to view/paste the URL in their post.

Yes, that and added bbcode. Wasn't sure where to put this but it does add a new function.

Has anyone tested how this works on different platforms? Specifically Mac for instance? Will it still work if a system does not have wmp?

i am not making any garuntees but usually if you have quicktie installed and you come across a code like this it will just use quicktime.

In fact my PC always used quicktime but i changed the settings to use WMP

The only way I have been able to make it so the video window doesn't show is to use a lesser version of WMP.

I have a mac guy on my site that says it works great. Obviously WMP must be installed on it though, not sure how that works with a mac. Also, the the attachment will still be posted as it normally is, this is an added option to be sure the original format is still preserved.

Sorry, I was mucking with it but this will require different bbcode, have a look at this post https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=72060 stitch has posted a variety of them for us. Like I said though, the only other one i've found that doesn't display the window is an older version. If someone can work out a way with the new one that would be great :)

ok one more problem when i put the code into the template it does not word wrap so its wider then the pop-up window

so i wanted to put it in newpost_attachmentbit

but then after you upload it does not refresh the page like it should

any solution?

Hades-1

i think its the template your using it works for you in your screenshot, when you make a hack you really should do so with the default template.

anyway i notice that ont he default template you should remove the </table> at the bottom in order for the file size and close window buttons to NOT break out of the template.

hence the beta release i guess

Good point Hades-1, thanks for pointing that out. I also played with it some in the attachment template, with a little work it could be setup using a new fieldset as well.

I don't know why it's doing that for you, I also tested this with my default template and it wraps the same as it does in my modified template it's contained withing the table so it should. What version of vbulletin are you using?

Works great. Very imaginative and creative. But, you have to make more changes if you want to upload video, yes?

Also, since this bbcode is the Windows Media Player it may also be able to play .avi, .wmv, .mpg etc. So to broaden this you can change the tag to something else like for example.

This does not change the default ".mp3" that pops up within the new media tags, as a file extension. Or, have I done something wrong?

Right, changing it to [MEDIA] (or anything else you want) is just a label, it will work the same either way. As for it playing video files etc. I think it really depends on your personal version of the player I have heard reports that it works for some and not others.

Also, if you want to use .avi (or another extension) for example you would need to specifiy it here in the newattachmentbit, the user may also simply change it after pasting it into the post:

<b>http://www.yoursite.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=$attach[attachmentid].avi</b>

Yes, understand. Awesome thing you've done here. But, it shouldn't be too difficult for you guys to expand on this, and list options (mpg, mpeg, avi, mpeg4, etc) that users can click on, in a radio box, and have the copy and paste code change automatically. Or, take it one more step, have it insert into the post automatically after the file type changes. Just a thought.

As I'm far from a coding genius, this would be beyond me. But, I don't think it would be something too difficult for you guys to accomplish. And it would make for a great improvement to a wonderful hack.

Oh, and I tried changing it to "media" for the hell of it, and I screwed it up. Not sure what I did, but it didn't work too well. (Works great, as per your specific directions, and very easy to install. Congrats!)

Thanks, great suggestions. My knowledge of this stuff is still pretty limited but I am learning more every day :) As for making the change, I have found that I needed to delete my bbcode and re-add it again when making that change, give it a shot and it should work for you.

I don't need this mod but I figured I'd contribute...

The player code you have would "bloat" any web page with unneccesary code (slows download of page).

Use this instead: NOTE: This code is not for video. If you want to display video you will need to add/edit new params to the javascript.

INSERT IN vbulletin_global.js (or some javascript file that is fetched from showthread.php)
function embedwma (wma,w) {
var str='';
str='\n<object id="MediaPlayer1" classid="clsid:22d6f312-b0f6-11d0-94ab-0080c74c7e95" width="'+w+'" height="20">\n'

Interesting princeton, so will this grab the url of the uploaded attachment and surround it with the proper quote?

Princeton
12-15-2004, 05:25 PM
it's the same as your code ... it just doesn't repeat the player code over and over again (everything is done on the client side)

FYI
you have a previous example with attachment id (.avi)
you do not need to add an extension ... the file is fetched by attachment.php (a function) with the proper extension

Also, you may have to create another function to hide BBCODE if viewer does not have permission to download attachment file; otherwise, user will get an error message.

I don't think that will work because we are basically bypassing all security for this to work. It's unfortunate because I am unable to come up with a way to secure custom bbcode, that's pretty much why i've halted work on this. :(

This hack adds a permission level to your board. Let's say you don't want unregister users to read the content of a post within a forum (A) then you turn off their ability to read posts in that forum (A) with this hack.

They still can be able browse and see the title of thread within (A). The moment they click on the thread title, they will be prompted with an No Permission message and urge them to register.

I think this is the one

I'm using this hack with great success. But I had another question about embedding players inside of posts. I'm embedding QuickTime, to show videos, and I'd like the background of the html that the QT player lives in (which gets embedded within the actual post), to match the postbit background color (all changeable, with the current style used, of course) Here's my html code:
<html>
<head>

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
</head>

<body bgcolor="#000000">

I currently use black, as a default. Any idea what html code I can put into this, so that the background is not black, but, the color of the viewer's style's postbit background???

First of all Id like to thank ericgtr for the nice hack that I got working, and all the others that contributed with ideas and developments. Great job!

Now, I am in need to display Quicktime mov-files in posts in the same way, and I was first very happy to find docvaders contribution above.
But theres something fishy going on here... I have allmost no hair left on my poor old head. :ermm:

First out is the expression OBJECT CLASSID="xxxxxxxxxxxx".
Im a noob in vb and php, and even I can see that this will simply not work. It was easy to solve by going to Quicktime website and check the ID. Correct expression then becomes: OBJECT CLASSID="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" A bit different... But that is NOT my problem.

My problem is passing a src parameter for the file location and name, to this statement: <PARAM name="SRC" VALUE="dechengwuxingbafa.mov"> and for the statement: EMBED SRC="xxxxxxxxx.mov"
The Windows Mediaplayer solve this by using {param} instead of URL+filename. Basic... :tired:

In the "Apple universe", I simply cannot find the same thing. I have to give an absolute URL+filename to make it work, but then my BB-code manager just plays the same movie whatever I do with the tags later on.

I mean, pressing the new icon mov.gif in my wysiwyg editor gives me the tags and in between I just want to give the URL+filename for my excellent movie. Different in every post...

Wont work... :o

I have tryed the trick using the "sample.mov" in my website root. No good.

My conclusion right now, before I felt forced to ask u expert guys for help: "How on earth can these wealthy MAC-users stay alive?" :tired:

I'll put up a reward of ?1.000.000 thanks to the individual who can explain how the apple code communicates and passes arguments in this case!

I really like the looks and sound of this mod so I have installed it on my test board. I followed the directions to the letter but for some reason I see no sign of it when I go to upload a mp3 file. I do hope you continue work on this. It has great potential I think.
I will go back and double check to see if I could have copied something wrong from the post.

Keep up the good work and don't let this die out :)

It doesn't actually appear until after the mp3 file is uploaded :)

oh yes of course Eric ;)
OK so now when I go to upload an mp3 I get the dreaded 'page can not be displayed ' error. Not sure why, it has never happened before. Nothing I did should have affected it. I will try another file and see what happens. So far I have tried 3 different mp3 files.
Love this, can't wait to get my little problem figured out. I am running vb 3.7 if that matters.

Do you have your files set to upload to the filesystem instead of the database? I would recommend it, especially if you are allowing mp3 files.

Curious, the hack is installed correctly, the player appears in the post, and the attachment is underneath it. However, when I press play on the player in the post, nothing happens. Am I missing a setup option somewhere?

Also, I added the mp3 as a storage type, since I didn't have it. What should the Mime Type be if it matters?

Thanks!

It sounds like the mp3 isn't pathed properly, make sure you change it in your attachmentbit template to your settings here:

yoursite.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=$attach[attachmentid].mp3

It shouldn't matter for this but I use:

Content-type: audio/x-mpeg

Thanks, I can download the mp3 attachment and it plays fine in my local player. It just doesn't play inline. I click the play button and nothing happens.

hi i'm a little confused as to where this goes

Now, in your newattachmentbit template add this to the bottom and change the URL to your own.
Code:

<div style="padding:$stylevar[formspacer]px">
<table class="fieldset" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" border="0" width="100%">
<tr>
You may optionally add the following line by copying and
pasting it into the body of the post. This will allow it to be played in an embedded
media player inside the post.
</tr>
<br />
<tr>
<b>http://www.yoursite.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=$attach[attachmentid].mp3</b>
</tr>
</table>

does this go into new attachment php???? i can get the WMP to show up ok on my board but i cant get the songs to play,mp3 files are uploading ok as well,,i just dont know where to put the above file please help

ericgtr

No, that section goes into the newattachmentbit template only, just scroll to the bottom of the template and paste it in. Then be sure to change the url to match your site, where your vb directory is:
http://www.yoursite.com/vbdirectory/attachment.php?attachmentid=$attach[attachmentid].mp3

Please read the instructions carefully, the first part you posted is the bbcode which is added through your admin CP > bbcodes (in the left menu towards the bottom). Then you need edit the newattachmenbit template by going into admin CP > Styles and templates > Search in Templates and type in newattachmentbit which will bring up the template where you will post the code that I gave.

I think I see it now, try this:
http://www.sats-general.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=$attach[attachmentid].mp3

You don't need to use /vb that is an example of your vb directory, not what you actually need to use, it's supposed to be specific to your url which is /forum.

How would you make it so people would have to sign in to view the video? I don't want to lock the forums down to that as quite a few of my members do read while in guest mode, but i'm not wanting to just allow anyone to click on the video's that might not be registered either.

as a n00b, im not following that instructiuon m8.
im having the same problem, where i have uploaded the attachment, it shows underneath the player, al is well, except i cant hear the file playing, and the player just seems to stick on "connecting"......

The bbcode will work for an outside link as well, as long as it's a file it can recognize, it's just a parser. So give it a try and see if it works for .wmv, if not it's a matter of finding the right WMV code which is pretty easy.

Okay, to make sure you are storing your files in file system and not the database.
Admin CP > Attachments > Attachment Storage Type. If 'Move Items to a Different Directory' is checked it means your files are stored in the database, you need to check 'Move Items from File System into Database' to move them into the file system.

Another common problem for it not playing is an incorrect path in the template, make sure this matches your site structure exactly:

http://www.yoursite.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=$attach[attachmentid].mp3

So from looking at your site in your profile it would belike this: (note, ++ is there because the language filter on this site doesn't like it, but you get the idea)

Great hack, just installed and after having some trouble uploading songs (because the files were located in database, after moving them to thr filesystem, i was able to uploading the songs) - but there is a new problem now. And I bet you've answered it before :) but I am still not able to work it out - so I need your help.

I am not able to run the file. I am sure it has to do something with the path -....

Short Noob question,
I'm just getting my Vb set up and I'm searching for hacks to have a coder install for me. I'm possibly needing this one as I'm about to attend a convention and will be trying to find a means to show Video that I have edited to the members in a easy to find means.
I had played with insertion of links to a .wmv file just to see how it worked. It did but of course it opened a window to do this in.
If i get this hack, and save the video to wmv, will the user have to download anything for this to play in that post that I drop it in. And also does it work for the version that I have?
Thanks,

I use:
Content-type: audio/x-mpeg

But it should still show up either way as long as it's in the extension list, not sure though so try adding this and see if it makes a difference. Also, you may want to try to upload the file anyway and see if it allows it.

OK I got it to show up. Thanks, but the only problem now is that its saying "File Too Large. Exceeds PHP's limit of 2.00 MB. " How could I increase this.
By the way this is cool once I get it working, do you have a donation set up to contribute for this hack.

Have a look at this thread to change it so you can allow for larger files, keep in mind that you need root access to your server, if you don't have it talk to your provider and they may be able to do it for you https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=81061

Thanks for the offer but I don't have anything setup for this, it's a pretty minor mod as it is :)

I just installed this today, it's great, thanks a lot!
BTW, I added a button to insert the code like this and it works:

-- In template editor_toolbar_wysiwyg
--> search for
$vBeditTemplate[extrabuttons]
--> insert just above it:
<td><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_editor]/separator.gif" alt="" width="6" height="20" /></td>
<td><div class="imagebutton" id="cmd_wrap0_media"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_editor]/media.gif" alt="$vbphrase[wrap_quote_tags]" width="21" height="20" /></div></td>

all you need is to put a gif image "media.gif" in the editor folder!

Ok,
I'm having some issues... I don't know if this is 3.5 RC3 compatable. Since RC3 was just released I'm almost positive it's not. Anyhow there are a few issues I encountered. In order for anybody to be able to upload huge files such as full MP3 songs over 2mb you need to tweak your php.ini file. For those of you in a shared environment it is not possible and most hosts will not do it for you. But if you get past that point and you add MP3 as a valid extension you're almost there. Now if you follow the instructions after you upload the file you'll see that it directs you how to post it so it is embedded i.e. You may optionally add the following line by copying and
pasting it into the body of the post. This will allow it to be played in an embedded media player inside the post
Now I'm fine and dandy but for some reason it still will not recognize the bb code. Yes it shows up in the admin and yes I can attach mp3s. Yes I have rebooted the server but no love... Any suggestions?
Thanks,
zoe

zoe, this has never been tested outside of 3.0.7 so I can't claim it works with any of the later versions. One thing you can try is to delete the custom bbcode and re-add it again, I've had to do that before.

Ok,
I'll give it a shot... If not I can always take double the dose of Zoloft and work the code to figure out the problem. Any ideas where to start?

Hey Ericgtr,
Hope you don't mind if I port it for 3.5 I think I may have a possible solution. I'm working on it this morning.

Ok,
For all of you that are interested this works for 3.5 with a few minor modifications.
In the newattachmentbit you now change the code to:
http://www.yoursite.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=$attach[attachmentid][/MP3]

Please make sure you've followed each detail of the instructions. It's hard to tell from that description but you will want to make sure that your template changes were applied.

Right, that's the one. You applied the bbcode and it shows up right in the admin CP after you added it?

yes bbcode shows up in admin.

It's hard to guess without seeing your setup, which template modification are you using, the one with or without restrictions (there are two options). If the one with restrictions try replacing it with the one without just to test.

I am using without restrictions and have tried the original and the slight adapted line given by zoe further up this thread but both show up as just the code not a player.

As I said the file can be attached via manage attachments and shows up fine and is clickable opening quicktime player.

the bbcode appears correct in admin and have double checked this in the post.

The replacement code in bbcode [mp3] is as follows

Okay, in your bbcode what did you setup your tag to be i.e. mp3 etc? We want to be sure that this line matches the tags in the template mod.

So if it's MP3 it should look like this:

http://www.yoursite.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=$attach[attachmentid].mp3

Do you have windows media player installed? It will not work with quicktime using that embedded media code. I would register at your forums to see but it looks like it may contain adult content and I am at work.

I've managed to set up this for the most part. But there is an issue with bbcode parsing in some special cases:

What could possibly cause this:

If I add an url into a forum posting inside bbcode and it contains an ampersand the result looks like

http://www.soundchilds.net/backstage/play.php?band_id=29&amp;song_id=24&amp;mode=song_hifi
and gets parsed all ok ie. the media can be streamed when using the [MEDIA] bbcode tag..

example post. http://www.soundchilds.net/loud_lounge/showpost.php?p=45435&postcount=3

If I add the same [MEDIA] tag at member.php in a profile field that can take bbcode the url breaks at a few places and looks like

http://www.soundchilds.net/backstage/play.php?band_id=29&amp;amp; song_id=24&amp;amp;mode=song _hifi

My member.php calls the functions_bbcodeparse.php. Including the file got the img tags properly showing instead of plain url's (I have the image resize hack installed).

Is there anyone around with an idea what might cause the above difference in parsing? Where would be best start looking?

I'm running a vb v 3.0.3

Thanks for any ideas!

Best regards,

-Mika

is there the possibility to have ALL the posts (also the old ones!) with mp3 to display the player inline?

I do not know what I do not have set right, but this will not work. Can someone please give me a hint of what may be the problem. The player shows in one post that I am testing this with. But when you push the play button it just stops.

See here: http://www.bigfootreferenceguide.com/showpost.php?p=245&postcount=1

Please help, this will help our Members so much rather than having to click back and forth from 2 different windows.

I spent my past week in looking for something like this, just a simple but perfect mp3 players.

What surprises me is that this is rare, after AnyMedia goes obsolete. All other mods are focused too much on the youtube thingy and totally neglect the simplest.

Moreover, I think that by increasing the size to 500 x 400, the same replacement can be used to play wmv video clips. I have yet to try it out.

/* Sigh */

:up:

Hawkins

So I tested it and it works fine for wmv type video clips.

I made another tag [wmv] using the same replacement, but increased the display size,
