Likely the source of the version number vB uses for update checks.

Is there an issue with it as I have noticed this today - it takes several seconds to get information returned from that subdomain... not noticed this previously.

<a href="http://version.vbulletin.com/" target="_blank">http://version.vbulletin.com/</a> is used to tell you the latest version of vB.

Its a java script call inside the admincp/index.php page. Your not supposed to see it.

Exactly. What it does is tell you the latest versionnr. of vBulletin and compare that with your current versionnr.

That's also how you get a message in your admincp, if there is a newer version available than the one you have running.

Oh, I think I saw it once when they had vB 3.0.3 available, gotcha, thank you ;)
