I want to create a dowloadable desktop icon on my site that a user can right click and save as to their desktop that already points to my site. I know that a user can right click on my site and choose create shortcut but that is not what i am looking for. I want it to use the .ico file i have already created and not have the shortcut arrow. the problem with just distruibuting the .ico file is that it does not have a destination by default. an examle of what i want can be found here:

I doubt you'll be able to pull that off.
I think the closest you'll get is a shortcut (favorite) that uses the favicon.ico format. But I don't think you'll be able to circumvent the arrow issue. Websites shouldn't be able to alter desktop performance/settings.
The link you provide just points to downloading an executable file to the desktop.
Just a thought.

nobody likes to run an executable that is not a program and only an icon-maker. You should be very trusted by your user to do that thing...

do you have any other suggestions? it does not have to be an exe. file. just something that assosiates both the icon file and my site address together so that it is a single download and the user does not have to manually associate the icon with the shortcut.

the problem i have with the favicon idea is that it is based on 16 x 16 image. it looks fine in the quick launch tray or favorites menu, but when it is on the desktop it looks like crap. thats why i want to use an actual icon

also, when you just create a shortcut by right clicking on the page, the shortcut it produces does not open a new window if you already have an IE window open.
