View Full Version : Allow BB code in sticky thread titles
Sticky threads have a tendency to be overlooked by the users. So I came up with the idea of allowing BB tags and smilies to be used in the sticky thread titles to make them more noticeable. I made this hack for VB2 about a year or 2 ago, but I neglected to publish it. Another reason why this hack is limited to sticky thread titles is because there are less sticky threads in a forum than there are regular threads, and if this were to be expanded to include regular threads it would be nothing but a can of worms. And also due to the fact that it can only be used in sticky threads, it allows only admins and moderators to use this feature.
This hack is such a simple hack that I am actually embarassed to call it a hack since it actually takes 2 lines of code to do it. :D
The instructions and a screen shot of the hack are attached to this post. :)
allows only admins and moderators to use this feature.
Unless you have uShop, or some other means for regs to make stickies. :)
Regardless, I'm checking this out.

I can use it regardless of how simple it is. Thanks.

pretty cool, but is it possible to have BB codes be used other then stickes, but only limited to a certain group can use bb codes in titles.

yer i had this added to my forum months ago but lost it on upgrade and never bothered adding it again. It wasnt yours but something very much alike. Anyway i have clicked install as its worth adding and will remind me to install it again when a new version comes out. :)

*edit* Damn. I seem to have messed that up.

thx kall but is their any way to hide the bbcode from being seen in the title since it displays fine in forumdisplay you can see the actuall code in showthread.
second when someone puts a url in the title field it wont go to the actuall thread it will go to that url, just so everyone knows that if your going to use this mod consider who you give access to use this mod as you never know what can happen especially when they have the ability to use almost any of the bbcodes and it will work as regular html.

A bit of an issue with it on my board unfortunately. Works great for thread titles but the BB code is displayed in both the breadcrumb and thread titles within each post. Attached screen cap....

That would require additional logic to determine whether to call parse_bbcode() or not per usergroup. :)

At the risk of sounding naive, moderators are usually the more responsible group of users on a board. So this shouldn't really be a problem.

I've had that happen, but on a different matter. That person was demoted and banned for a month. :D

Is there a simple extra hack to parse the bb code with seach.php when searching for new posts?
Cause people use newposts a lot at my forum. That would be great. :D

does this restrict the url tags??? cause if you use it, just like the old 2.x hack, it will go to the url instead of the thread. This can be misused.

^ ^
it's a mods only feature, no problem. :)
Zzed, great idea! :D
But it doesn't show the bbcode parsed titles in many places, like the search, who's online, title in the threaddisplay page, the title on forumhome , print page etc etc.
It only shows on forumdisplay ( which figures since the only code change was there ).
Any plans to cover the rest as well ?
Would be a more complete hack that way :D
Hope to see updates soon ! :D

It isn't very professional to have these code brackets in a thread...

I fixed it in a few places where I felt it was needed mostly.
To display in the search results
in /search.php find// get info from thread
$thread = process_thread_array($thread, $lastread["$thread[forumid]"]);and replace with// get info from thread
require_once('./includes/functions_bbcodeparse.php');
$thread['threadtitle'] = parse_bbcode($thread['threadtitle']);
$thread = process_thread_array($thread, $lastread["$thread[forumid]"]);
To display on the top navigating bit of the thread
in /showthread.php find$navbits[''] = $thread['title']; and add above itrequire_once('./includes/functions_bbcodeparse.php');
$thread['title'] = parse_bbcode($thread['title']);
I couldn't figure out how to add it to the post titles :devious: This worked fine for the others though. Not bad for 1st timer :)
note: this would allow nonsticky's to show in the search results and the navbit but not in the forum dislpay

This hack does not like quotes in thread titles.... it displays them as "SO- a title that said:
Say "HI" to the new guests!
now reads:
Say "HI" to the new guests!

Here you go Triple_T :)
@Zzed - Feel free to use this for a 3.5 release - I began to work on getting the navbits to display the parsed text as well, but there is still the thread-title aspect of the postbit to consider and of course the lastposter info from forumdisplay and in a user's profile ;)
Edit: I noticed my attempt to get the navbits to parse has destroyed the structure of the navigation tree - That will need some additional work :)
I've also posted some screenshots - You can parse smilies and basic BBCode functions within your sticky titles:
Beware: If you allow user's to post stickies you may risk causing layout damage to your board if they are over-enthusiastic with their BBCodes... ;)
