Heres the scenario, we have a forum with a free classifieds section. It was really getting abused by some users and people who registered for nothing other then to sell their crap on there so we buckled down and got some pretty tough rules and made it where no one can reply to their ads (To prevent people from bumping and hogging the top spots. We get complaints all the time now about people having to answer PM's that could be answere in a reply, but we also get people who praise the fact that the ads stay in place and do not shift around. The only other thing is this has become a moderating nightmare, people wanting posts removed, edited, replaced, ect ect. So I came up with the idea, what if people can reply to the posts, but they do not change posistion on the forumdisplay.php page. What would be involved in doing that? It would really be beneficial to us I believe. Thanks for the help.

What causes the bump? The dateline right? *snip snip* XD

you could always do an if check in the php file and if the forumid or whatever you use to identify it is a certain one, then not add the dateline, or better yet, a really old preset dateline.

there is a hack called Slippery for vB2, that do the exact thing... moderators set a thread to Slippery and after that, the thread never will be bumped...
this hack can be reworked to set preferences per forum, or again by moderator needs...

oh, and ...teuf teuf... i've released a hack that permit to do what you wish anyway.. stupid me:
Sort Order and Sort Field per Forum Basis + Sort by Creation Date (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=68382)
Sort by Creation Date Only (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=68434)

the hack will give you the possibility to set some forums to display the threads by Creation Date, so users will not see the threads bump, they all be listed by news thread, or oldest, depending on you...

I have a similar problem ALSO with a classifieds section on a forum....

I was daydreaming that it might be fair for the original poster to be able to RESPOND to a posted question on the thread - but not bump it themselves. If no one asks about it - it drifts off the page...

HOW-EVER!!! - That would be open to abuse by people creating bogus identities just to ask "questions" - to keep their own sale items on top...It would be a pain to keep track of bogus registrations...

Hmmmmmm...

Perhaps idea that HondaATC started with is the best... they CAN answer questions - but as time passses and more items come up for sale the thread floats downwards...

Seems like this would make for a more orderly classsifieds? One that could be studied, and look interesting over a year or so.. tracking who was selling what and when..

.. it could help display sales 'trends' - over time...

Interesting...

Any further thoughts??

What to do about SOLD items?

Is there an idea for that too?

ANY VB3 hacks for all this?

Thanks in advance...

Hey Make Money, I'm using nexialys's " Sort Order and Sort Field per Forum Basis + Sort by Creation Date" (Link to hack above in his post). We've been using it for nearly a year now and only recently had trouble when we upgraded to 3.08. Anyways, to answer your question it works very well. What we do is allow the poster to modify their thread title at any time. If their item sells, they are to edit the thread title and put sold in it. I do a quick run through on the first page of the classifieds once every other couple days, and also do a search for "Sold" everyonce in a while to pickup anyones I might have accidently left behind. After polling our members we discovered that almost everyone prefered being able to reply to posts instead of them not being able to. Its a great mod and it works very well. Does exactly what we want. If your interested in seeing my classifieds, PM me and I'll give you the forum address.

V cool Honda - I may PM you.. v kind offer. Thanks

I did a poll... seems overall.. they LIKE bumping?????

1) Keep the thread "bump" option going in the classsifieds forum 60.47%

2) Keep threads 'fixed' in time in the classsifieds forum and NOT allow them to be bumped to the top of the forum 22.09%

3) Dont care either way 17.44%

Hmmmmm..... not quite the result I thought I would get...

I think it is worried vendors voting...

Thoughts anyone?
