Forum Opt-out/ anti-user group?

The opt-in or user group feature is very handy for letting users access forums that most people may not wan tto see but it is a pain when it comes to forums that you want people to see. I am looking for a hack or a conditional if it is possible that lets users opt not to see a forum just like a user can join a group to opt to see a forum. This would mean that every user who signs up anew sees the forum but those who dont want to, dont have to. Any pointers/ links would be great, thanks!

You could just create a group that can see every forum except the one they're opting out of? Though that means they can only opt out of one at a time, unless you create x number of groups with different settings.

This is something i'd like too. We have a "Chit-chat" forum for general nonsense which is off topic (but on active forums like mine, people get to know each other and do need a place to socialise) but many members don't like these posts coming up in searches and on the New Posts page.
