How to subdivide forums and child-forums like vBulletin.org?

Hi,

How can I subdivide my forums with their child-forums into separate boxes?
I.e. vBulletin.org's forum is subdivided into "vBulletin.org", "Code Modifications vB3", "Code Modifications vB", etc with their respective child-forums contained in these boxes.

Is this a hack? Can anyone tell me how this is done?
