Welcome to my first Release of

Smilie Category Hack or How-to-organize VB smilies in a nutshell

This small Hack helps you to organize your smilies in a better and easier way:

How does this work ?

You have to have to create multiple Smilie Categories with your ACP Smilie Manager. This hack will offer you a form select screen in your smilie popup window. So you can now easily choose from different categories.
The integration should take about 5 minutes and is very easy. But please remember that you need to have at least 2 categories created with your smiliemanager in your ACP.

Required actions:

- 1 template change
- 1 php file change

Please click on this install button (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/vborg_miscactions.php?do=installhack&threadid=65394) or on the install button on the upper right corner if you wish to get support for this hack.

Update 1.01
Bug in the WYSIWYG editor fixed.

Enjoy it.

Hi Enrique,

this could be implemented but smilies are publicly available in VB. So even if i would implement the onclick implementation per usergroup, people could just guess or ask how to create a smilie like :confidential: and then everyone could post this smilie without using the VB click smilie method. So it would not make sense to implement something like this. Sorry.

Great hack, Pseudomizer! Thanks.

One thing: Where would I add padding so everything isn't pressed up against the sides of the box?

Looks good Pseudomizer . I noticed you have a similar smiley hack. What's the difference between the two?

Hi Intex,

the differences between these two hacks are:

- navigation menu like navbar for smilie hack
- no click-add function for smilie hack
- [IMG Tag for cut and paste into thread in smilie hack
- you don't have to define replacement words for the smilies in the smilie hack
- smilie hack is a total diffent page and totally independant of the VB smilies
- no database entries

- the smilie category hack uses the VB smilies
- drop down field for categories
- easy click and add function into thread

Hi MindTrix,

thanks for pointing this out. As it looks like as soon as a category name has a special character in the name like &,$, etc no smilies are showing up.

I will investigate why this is happening and i will fix this in the version. Until then please do not use any special characters in the name ( german umlaut work in the names *weird* ).

Sorry for this inconvenience.

Hi MindTrix,

do we still talk about the same board ? I just tested it and it works for all smilies for all categories. The only problem that could occur here is the focus command. So if you have multiple new thread or answer thread windows open, then the vb script will not know where to put the smilies. But this is VB and nothing to do with this hack.

Please give some more details. Thanks.

Nope definetly not working now, and yes its the same board. Ummm i only have one window open, click MORE to show the smilies, choose a catagory, then if i place the mouse over a smilie it shows the mouse cursor turning into a hand like normal, but clicking it does not place the smilie in the post. :(

This is very strange. I just went to your board and logged in with the guest account you gave me and tried it. It worked for all categories and i tried at least 5 smilies in each category. Which browser are you using ? Perhaps it's a browser problem ?

It works with my browser. Any other people on your board experiencing this problem ?

Hi MindTrix,

i just checked again. I opened a reply thread clicked through some smilies. Changed the window, came back again, changed the category and i could always insert a smilie.

Then i posted these smilies in your specific thread and it worked.

Your problem is not reproduceable by me. If i do not get the same error i will not be able to find the problem to solve it.

I am using IE6 SP1.

Then we have to do it step by step. I would suggest the following:

- close all windows and open one window with your forum
- log in with the guest account you gave me
- reply on one post and try some smilies

This would be my first step. Perhaps it is dependant on usergroup rights or something like this.

If the smilies work, then we will have a deeper look into it why it behaves like this. If they do not work, then some of your clients ( including yourself ) have something diffent to my PC.

I will try it with my 2 other PC running Windows 2000 and XP.

I also tried it with Opera 7.03 and it works fine on your domain. The only problem with Opera is, that the smilies are added at the end of the text and not where the cursor is, but this is a know problem of the VB implementation.

Then it looks like that some parameters are given to the first page which i did not pass to the other subpages. I just checked and i could not find it. Any idea which parameter this could be ? The wyziwyg editor seems to use more hidden params.

Any help is welcome to find this bug.

I played around a little more in the WYSIWIG settings and found that if I removed the clickable box and changed WYSIWYG Smilie Menu Total Smilies from the original 15 to the total number of smilies, then I could pick one from any category. The problem is that I have almost 1000 smilies (which is why I needed the category hack in the first place) and setting the menu total to 1000 makes the postbit load at a snail's pace.

So it's obviously not even close to a solution, but hopefully this experiment might you a better idea of how to procede towards a fix. I truly love this hack, Pseudomizer, and I very much hope you can pinpoint the problem. Until then, I'd far rather have my categories than the WYSIWYG editor. :)

Hi,

this is really weird. If i could reproduce this problem, i would sit down and try to find the problem. But if i can not reproduce the problem, i can't do anything. It works on my board without any problems with the normal mode and the enhanced mode.

Could someone of you where it is not working try it out on my board please ? Go to http://www.LoveTalks.de and login with "vbulletin" password "smilies". Go into the LoveTalks Support Subforum and create a thread and try the smilies.

If it does not work on my domain, then it has to do something with your browser. If it does work on my domain, then it has to do something with your server. I have no better idea how to find out what is causing this problem.

So any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Pseudomizer,

msimplay is right, I think. You probably have "Enable Standard Controls" set in the Message Posting Interface Options instead of "Enable Standard & WYSIWYG Controls". If you change that then we can try to recreate the problem with the test account.

Hi have enabled now everything that has to do with WYSIWYG. Please have a look now.

Cheers,

Thank you, Pseudomizer. The WYSIWYG editor causes the same problem on your site as it does on mine. Specifically, all the standard smilies in both the pull-down menu and the clickable sidebox insert normally; any of the smilies in the special categories will not insert when you click on them.

On the other hand, you can r-click, copy and paste all the ones in the nonstandard categories into a new post. Mystifying, is it not?

Hi @LL,

i am totally confused now. Please let's try it step by step.

We do NOT talk about the quick reply box. We talk about the window that opens when you click on reply. A new window opens and you can write your posts in there. At the side you have some smilies and you can click on the "more smilies" link to open a new window.

I am confused because i do not see any difference with the WYSIWYG editor enabled. It looks the same as before. The same options, nothing new. And if i try to click a smilie, it works.

Please help me and tell me where you click and what buttons you are pushing to receive this error.

Thanks.

Hi Pseudomizer,

These were my exact steps on your forum:

Chose Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG Editing in my user options
Clicked New Thread in the Support forum
Clicked on a smilie in the clickable smilie box to the right - it inserted into the post as normal
Clicked on the More link
Selected Special 1 and clicked Go
Clicked on ":igitt:" smilie - it did not insert
Clicked on ":armor:" smilie - it did not insert
Right-clicked on ":igitt:" and clicked Copy
Right-clicked in the new post and clicked Paste - smilie inserted
Clicked on a smilie from the smilie drop-down menu on the bbcode toolbar to the right of the font color option - it inserted into the post as normal
Clicked on the Show all Smilies link at the bottom of the menu
Selected Special 2 and clicked Go
Clicked on ":duschen:" smilie - it did not insert
Clicked on ":bad:" smilie - it did not insert
Right-clicked on ":duschen:" and clicked Copy
Right-clicked in the new post and clicked Paste - smilie inserted

I hope this helps. Thanks again for all your hard work.

Ahh. Ok. Now i got ya. I did not had the WYSIWYG editor enabled. I thought by enabling it via the ACP it should work. Ok. Sorry for that.

But in addition that i can reproduce your error now, i get a javascript error that this object does not support this function. So it is a javascript error and not as mentioned before a PHP error.

I will try to find the error now and fix it.

and replace this line with this line:

Hi Pseudomizer,

I really can't figure this out. I just want some space (like 20 pixels) between the left edge of the popup box and the dropdown category field. Also, I'd like to be able to resize the pop-up box. I tried messing with smiliepopup and smiliepopup_category templates and nothing worked.

What am I missing here? :ermm:

Hi tmhall,

you can define the size and location of the pop-up window in the "editor_clientscript" template.

And if you wish to create more space then add HTML code in this line:

$new_smilies .= "<form name=\"smilieform\" action=\"misc.php\">";

You add your code before the < FORM but after the ".

Even if you go with conditionals this would not be a solution. If someone knows the URL of your smilie, he will be able to use it.

The only way to prevent specific users from using specific smilies would be a .htaccess solution combined with queries to your database.

This would be a performance impact and very difficult to be implemented.

I would not recommend requesting this feature.

Yes. I needed it for my over 1000 smilies. Now we have to figure out 1000 expressions, one for each smilie. :rolleyes: Let's see how many we will integrate with this hack.

But i am glad you like it. :)

I love it! I do have a problem though that I am hoping you can help me with. I use VBIndex and my smilies won't show on the front page shoutbox unless the full path is written. If I do that then my all my smilies are starting to show up in the "Add Smilie" section. I did not see this issue before, but I cannot be sure that it is because of the hack. Do you have any suggestions? Any and all help would be much appreciated! :D

Hi Diva,

did you replace the URL of each smilies with the http full link? I had to do this for my board and for my portal. But this should be independant of this smilie hack.

I did. Now I have them in the categories with the full url and as new smilies with just images/smilies. For some reason It's reading them twice because of the url.

I am not sure if this is the hack I was looking for or not. One of the forums I go to have it where on the new thread/reply page they have their smilies categorized like:

Basic
-smilies here-

Other
-smilies here-

Is this hack supposed to do this or did I do something wrong when I installed it?

Here is a snapshot:
http://locodreamers.com/snapshot.jpg

Is this correct? And if it is am I looking for a different hack or an add-on or something?

And yeah, I have 2 different smilie categories in the admicp.

Hope that made sense...

Thanks.

Hi,

this hack lets you categorize all your smilies when you click on the button "more smilies" on your reply page. It does not categorize your smilies on the right side of your reply box. Only if you click on the "more" button.

Hope this clarifies.

Cheers,

Did you ever find a fix for this?

Pseudomizer, and what about to add a item in the form list to show all smilies (from all categories)?

It's posible?
How?

I like this hack, but some users who don't want to know all smilies in certain category would wish to display all of them, like the old way.
Is too hard to add a "show all" item and display the entire collection of smilies?

Hello TCattitude,

this would be possible but i would strongly recommend not to do it. Before my hack you had all smilies on one page. With my hack you have the ability to show the smilies in different categories.

What you are requesting would be a major change to the userprofile, the templates and the smilie php file to add the ability to set which mode you wish to have to display the smilies: with or without categories.

If you would implement something like this then some of your members who would like to see the smilies without categories will get timeouts because you have to many smilies or the load of the page would take ages.

My hack is aiming for the boards which want to implement a lot of smilies and make it browseable with the appropriate performance.

So my suggestion for you: If the majority of your members don't like the categories switch back to the normal view. Otherwise stay with my hack.

Cheers,

i was thinking the same thing a show all button
implemented into the hack
no need for user profile changes just one button that allows to show them all as a choice in the smilie popup itself

Then why do you need my hack? Your show all smilies button would be the standard smilie integration from vbulletin. I do not see the need here. Just deinstall my hack and you have all smilies there.

A simple modification to make a "show all smilies" button appear, and make the life of some users in a board with this hack installed a little bit easy.

Ok T3media,

now we determined what we talk about. But let me ask you a question:

What prevents a user which is NOT a premium member of using the bbcode for the premium smilie? E.g. :-& would be a premium smilie and only premium members would be able to click it. But the system would not prevent other users of using this code to post this smilie?

I had this discussion before and due to this nothing has been done in this direction. And keep in mind that users will share the information how to post these smilies or just use the quote button to see the bbcode for the smilie.

My personal opinion is that this is overdozed to distingiush between standard, premium, gold smilies for postings.

Sure. Just implement for admins something like:

if ( $bbuserinfo[usergrouid] == "6" )
{
echo "<option bla bla>My Category</option>">
}

But be aware that other people will be able to use the same smilies as soon as they copy the code from the originals postings. So for me this does not make sense at all. But the solution is above.

Look for this code in the install.html file:

foreach ($new_categories AS $input)
{
$add_select .= "<option value=\"".$input."\">$input";
}

It should look like this:

foreach ($new_categories AS $input)
{
if ( $input == "yourcategoryname" )
{
if ( $bbuserinfo[usergrouid] == "6" )
{
$add_select .= "<option value=\"".$input."\">$input";
}
else
{
// do nothing
}
}
else
{
$add_select .= "<option value=\"".$input."\">$input";
}
}

And if you want to add more categories then replace this line:

if ( $input == "yourcategoryname" )

with this:

if ( $input == "yourcategoryname" || $input == "secondcategory" )

{
if ( $bbuserinfo[usergroupid] != "6" || $bbuserinfo[usergroupid] != "7")

//eval('$smiliebits .= "' . fetch_template('help_smilies_category') . '";');
}
else {

Nice hack. I may use it in the future.

I have a 3.5 - style one done and posted on my website if anybody needs to get it. it's freely available for those who need it.
Actually it's not. When you click on any of the links you get an error message saying it's "not a public forum". Even when you click on the link to contact you this same error message pops up :(

That's the only reason why we came here looking for a hack like this. Otherwise we would have used yours.

Sinaluna I feel your pain :)

Hello,

just to make it clear here, that I will release an update for the 3.5 version but due to my current relocation to US (within my company) I will not be able to work on this until November.

So you should expect an update end of November or December 2005!

Cheers,

You're freaking kidding me with that c'mon, right? That is the ultimate height of rudeness. NOBODY here is required to release their code for you. Write the code yourself if you need it so badly. Otherwise, mind your manners.

sinaluna

I believe the phrase you used was "freely available". Which wasn't true.

As a way to lure people to your site, it was worse than rude. I won't buy from people who use such dishonest tactics.

My apolgies to Pseudomizer, this doesn't belong on your thread. I will wait for your code and thanks. :)

Sinaluna - yes, it was true. We were having an upgrade issue the day you tried. However, I have since removed the offer. I am no longer making it available for just anybody at my site. But, my above post was in response to Gotti's post telling the original author to 'cmon.

I offered the code to the original hack author because I don't have the time to deal with request approvals and such. I don't believe he was interested though.

Also, what do you mean by drag and drop problem?

This works brilliantly...just need to change the one saying in the plugin for the pulldown menu...it's in another language...but I changed it to say something like "choose a category".

Thank you BUNCHES for sending this to me! You rock! Now all my smilies work in IE and not just FF...

Psst...send me a PayPal addy in a pm and I'll send you a thank you ;)
