Hello. I am new to using php in websites. I would like to use vBulletin, but I don't know what php portals are based around it; or if there are any. I was told that there are portal hacks, which could, in effect, allow me to use vBulletin for whatever portals had hacks. What portal is this site running on? What are, in your opinion, the best portals which do/can (with the assistance of a hack) utilize vBulletin?

Thanks

There are a few portals, it all depends on your needs.

If low scale you can use a portal like here, just some basic info tossed into a page.

If you want a higher scale there is one called vbportal that cost $20 with alot of add ins (also alittle more server intence).

It is all based on your 'needs' or 'wants' and what you are planning on showing on the portal.

There is a section in the full release code modifications, which has portals in.

As for our portal, you won't find it anywhere else, as it's written by myself for vb.org only.

I have been asked to be the webmaster for a gaming company (here is the website that I am speaking of.. http://www.fighterops.com/index.php). They currently have phpBB, but they want to switch to vBulletin. They don't like how bland the website is (though that could be easily changed) and they want more sections than their original portal. Some things that they want to be visible on the main page are polls, recent forum activity, and news (which they would be able to update by themselves via the internet). Also, the ability to login in and view your membership information directly form the main page is important.

Like I said, I am new to a php style site, as I do more large scale static HTML sites, but I would like to learn how to do this, which is why I've come here for your advice. What portals would meet the criteria I set before?

Thanks a lot!

Do you install vBulletin first? Or the portal first?
Or what is the process of a clean installation (sorry if I'm slow at this..)
They do want to keep to topics and members from the previous forum, which is possible through the vBulletin converter (from phpBB), so where does that fit in the process? Thank you for your time.

I've never installed software such as this. The forum software I've used in the past was installed on shared hosting via a web control panel. Does the installer work remotely, where it will ask you for access to the server and then install the necessary files via the internet, or do you have to actually be on the server (be it shared or dedicated)?

you have to upload the files via ftp.

then you can run the installer via your normal internet browser.

For more infos about the installation process and importers, i suggest you look at vbulletin.com.
There are a lot of those things explained very well :)

Yeah, I figured that would be the place to ask but I was on a roll here so I went for it. Thanks for the response, and for all your help.
