This could have been asked before however searching through all these pages was taking a long time.

I just installed the mod on 3.0.3 and I get this error:

Gateway version 2.2.1 1 group(s) gatewayed. Could not connect to NNTP-serverNot connectedNot connected

There seems to have been a slight problem with the Domain.com.com database.

There seems to have been a slight problem with the Domain.com.com database.

Have you set up properly with correct database, news servers?

It mentioned about "Domain.com.com", is this your database name?

Well it installs it self the first time you click on the settings table correct?

I changed the DB and URL so no search engine would not pick it up.

I wish I could find the old version I used because it works great other then a few DB errors I get via cron once or twice a week.

I would use this but I only have my ISP news server and it only allows access from my ISPs IP....
Plus my hosting server only has ssh no telnet...

Could you have a look at the attached email? On my board it imports the message, it seems to skip the .htm attachement, and the .zip attachement is(partially) inserted into the message instead of as an attachement.

I just thought of that i don't have the .htm added as an allowed attachement. Which happened quiet often to me (forget adding attachements types).
Isn't there a way to circumvent the vB attachement types setting with this hack ? It would save alot if so i guess. I'm also not sure about if i even want all members to post the same attachement types that *can* be attached in emails.

Are you using the latest mime.php from the first page?

The attached file could be a virus. (sexygirl.zip)
The html is not an attachment, it is simply the html version of the text message.

I would like to pull the Usenet threads and place them in more specific forums (categories). The ultimate solution for me would be the ability to reply from any forum back to the usenet if that is where the post is from. Is this possible?

The question here is: which one goes into which forum? you need to at least
have some sort of criteria.

The html is not an attachment, it is simply the html version of the text message.
I'm aware of the possible virus, but that is no problem for the members that can access the forum.

I did not use the additional mime.php yet. Only the files from your latest release in the .zip. But even without it, shouldn't it be posting the message with those =3D type characters from m$ products?

Eitherway i will upload the newer mime.php.

Just remove the files you uploaded and delete the USENET forums. That is all.

I have installed this hack and it worked great but now a couple of day's ago i'm getting errors.

I don't know what is going on here but it does not work any more.

I have this installed on one of my forums and it is working great. I installed it on another forum and all of the scheduled tasks are not working. I have imported 40,000+ threads and would hate to have to re-import them.

The original skin is in place and the $cronjob variable is part of the footer. There is enough traffic to keep the script working... I have asked on vB.com forums but was told I could not get support since the board is "hacked".

Do you all know of anything that might have caused the scheduled tasks to stop working? I was hoping someone out there might have had the same problem but found a way to kick start the tasks?

Hi all,

I still can't post to usenet. Everything works fine besides that. I can import all the messages, and post in the thread. But the posts are not getting sent to usenet.

My host has told me that he gets an error stating that there is no "to:" and no email address from the poster. So, I'm guessing since these are missing, the posts are rejected from usenet.

Here's the error message from my host (I've changed my host name and my IP):

So pretty much everything is screwed up. No to, email, organisation, user-agent and the profile and view this thread also.

I have also attached 2 screenshots of my newsgroup settings from phpmyadmin. (I changed my website name to xyz to protect the guilty :rolleyes: ).

This is one of the another awesome hack on vb.org Big thnx for releasing.

I was able to install this hack successfully though i have a few problems.

1. I have setup a Scheduled Task in my admincp -> scheduled task manager -> named as Gateway threads import with foll. settings:

Day of the Week = *
Day of the Month = *
Hour = *
Minute = 15
Log Entries = Yes
Filename = gateway.php

a. I find that there are no log entries generated for same ?
b. This file is now called every minute, i can see new posts/threads from those servers every new minute on my forums ? (I want to import messages @ an interval of every 15 minutes)

2. Unable to send messages back to those newgroups, from forums. I dont have SSH/TELNET access to my server, confirmed with my host and got a reply that port 119 is enabled both ways..
(Please let me know exactly what logs do i post here, to debug)

3. I have checked some other boards using this hack and found they have filtered there threads titles which contain words Re:
or
there body messages which start with > symbol are not there.
Any general idea, on taking those off would be helpful for me.

1. I will check the log problem before next release.
Make sure you do not have another scheduled task which has * set to the minute. If you set 15 to the minute, it should not run every minute!

2. Time and time again, if there is no debug masssage posted, I would not have single idea about why the posts do not go out. People seem think I know all their server situations.:)

3. No idea about this.

It is possible that the server does not allow you to post.

To further debug, with nntp.php file around line 177,
find
$response = trim(fgets($this->fp, 128));

Add a '.' before the '=', ie.

$response .= trim(fgets($this->fp, 128));

Post the debug message again.

I believe the gateway will ignore the moderation (that is your local forums' moderation). If the newsgroup is moderated, than what ever happens after the gateway sending the posts, will depend on the moderation process.

is there something special i need to do in order to have the hack work on more than 1 forum? I instaled it on 2 different sites and both sites will only allow me to pull from 1 Usenet group

Ok I did the special debug you suggested and it appears NNTP posting isn't allowed. I think it's my webhost please take a look at the debug and let me know what you think my options are.

Hey, I've been using this for a few months and everything was good.

Then about a week ago, I started getting this error message when the import would run:

Getting message number 689792: /home/pokerpla/bin/cron_gateway_script.sh: line 3: 24708 Segmentation fault php gateway.php

Any help is appreciated.

EDIT - I downloaded the new interface and used that to set the max message to 689800. That did NOT fix the problem. Now I just get this from my cron job:

/home/pokerpla/bin/cron_gateway_script.sh: line 3: 32493 Segmentation fault php gateway.php

MORE INFO: If I try to manually run gateway.php?debug=1 I get a blank white page...no error, no text...it just is blank.

Still More info: After Setting the number even higher, it imported a bunch of posts, but my cron email which usually looks like this:

lierduh now i am confused, though posting the results above i saw it works, a few of the threads my members are replying to, dont get added to NNTP Server. I cannot get debug logs for same..

Those threads are still present on my forums, but dont appear on USENET. any ideaz ?
this problem was also reported to by few of members who have installed this hack and they gave up its use.. but i want to use the same.. :disappointed:

However, I just redownloaded the file and reuploaded it and now it works BUT - it still starts the output like this:

Have you re-uploaded other files? such as mime.php etc. Or you just uploaded gateway.php again?

I am willing to pay for a NNTP news server. What news server can I use ? Anybody with Usenet.com or Newsfeeds.com ? Or it doesn't matter ? Here is their answer (usenet, newsfeeds):

The question need to be asked is: can the web server access the news server? It is perhaps easier to use the news server that your web hosting company might have. Failing that, you just need to make sure the web server can access the news server on port 119 using tcp protocol. In a nutshell, the web server which runs this script will act as a news reader, it must be able to read news via port 119 using tcp protocol. You might need to check this with your web host company in case they run outbound firewall on the web server. Some commercial news contents providers let you access news (nntp) through other common ports (eg. port 80) to get around.

Prefix is now used for filtering mailing lists. With a single email account subscribed to multiple mailing lists, one group will only import those emails with defined "Prefix" in the subject. eg.

Set:
newbie

as prefix for forum 1.

Set:
develope

as prefix for forum 2.

forum 1 will only import the emails with [newbie] in the subject (newbie as well)

forum 2 will ignore those and only take care of emails with [develope]/develope in the subject.

Ugg.

Ok, I got everything working.

It was all working fine...cron scheduled hourly and it would run great.

Then, all of a sudden, it just doesn't download (import) any new messages anymore.

So, I posted a message in my forum and ran it manually - that message was exported, but nothing was imported.

So, I check the last post ID variable and found it to be 194025. I set it down to 193000 and reran the gateway (with debug =1). Nothing was imported, however, the last post ID was RESET to 194025.

All I get now is this:

Gateway version 2.2.1 1 group(s) gatewayed.

Connecting to server, server says: 200 216.128.74.129

Server responded after user name: 381 Helo adx785 password required

Server responded after password: 281 Authorization accepted

Well, I got it working. I had set the Post ID and not the message ID.

The message ID is in the Groups page and the post is in the settings page.

Message is for the usenet number and postid is for the internal (max vbulletin forum post) number.

There must be some messages that cause this script to die. Once I bumped the message number up again, it worked.

Ok I deleted the 2 databases that get created and reinstalled the files again and you were right it now only posts one message. Everything seems to be working great except for my sql database. I pruned even deleted my entive newsgroup forum but the size of my sql database doesnt get smaller? Is this normal? If it is normal how can I safely prune the sql database to throw away all the old garbage?

Not sure what size you are referring to. The raw mysql file size? or the mysqldump file size?

MyISAM tables keep the space after deletion. New records will be inserted into the empty spaces. You might like to search Google for
optimize myisam table
and/or
phpmyadmin overhead optimize

The USENET posts post only once, but in my statistics box on teh main page, it doubles the amount of posts by all the posts in my rec.gambling.poker forum.

When you say "addressing" are you referring to the address of the newsgroup? If you don't mind, post a link to the Google newsgroup and i'll tell you what the address is.

It should be in the format of something like alt.religion.christian or something like that.

BTW -- if you're new and you're trying to install this, you need to know that in-order to get the news you'll probably need some kind of NNTP news server. I'm using giganews located at http://giganews.com, it's not free though. :)

No, unfortunately I don't. Though I'm sure that if you search Google for "free NNTP usenet" you'll find some. Here's one I found a few days ago: http://news.individual.net

They're free. I registered with them to use as a backup news server. They need to manually set-up your account, I registered a few days ago and haven't heard back from them yet.

In the feature release, I intend to use the traditional Usenet way of quoting, which is ">" etc. It will be much easier to reply a post without insert all the BB codes for each quote tags.

It is technically possible to convert ">"s into Quotes, but people do use other type of prefix for quotes on Usenet. ...and also, you may end up with too many level of quotes if the posts contain ">>>>>>>>".

Ok..this is frustrating, everything is working except now I can import posts fine but none of my posts are being submitted to usenet!

Is there anything I can do to fix this? Maybe something in my settings wasn't done right? For organization I have my domain name and I have this for the email; "no-mx.forums.MyDomain.com"

With MyDomain being my sites real domain. is that corrent, or should the syntax be emailAddress@mydomain.com?

This setting will not affect the functionality. The reason I added no-mx is to avoid your email servers getting hit with all the spam attempts.

Your problem is probably caused by the server not letting you to post.

I got my webhost to open port 119 for outgoing but my posts still aren't propagating to usenet. I logged in to my host via telnet and went to news.giganews.com on port 119. I was able to read posts *and* submit posts to usenet without any problems. Doesn't that mean that port 119 is open for outgoing traffic and I should be able to post from my forum???

I would like to try something else. Could I connect to giganews.com from another port, such as port 80 and post and read messages? if I wanted to do that, where would I find the 119 in the script and change it? I checked nntp.php and gateway.php and saw one instance of port 119 in each, would that be all that is required to connect via port 80 instead of 119?

When I use reply or quote on my forum it threads correctly but when I run the script and it uploads to usenet my posts never get placed in the thread but instead show up as an individual posts - am I missing a setting somewhere? Other then that the script is working flawlessly now.

This error is not caused by settings. It is possible you have a corrupted script. So upload it again.

Just got this run up for ingoing and outgoing data. The cron job works fine.

But debug=1 give me the same mysql error. Also, I have a double post issue but I'm going to test your solution found in thread.

Is it possible to run gateway in sub-forums i.e. forum/forumhttp/forumnntp ?

Trying to resolve the last two issues and I'll click install.

Before to find a new host, it may be a good idea to manually go to the URL of your gateway.php and run it after posting to usenet just to check outgoing.

Just my 2 cents.

Small question here. I have moderation turned on in a forum that USENET posts are going to but they are going straight to the forum instead of the mod queue. This might be a long stretch but is it possible to have all usenet posts go into the mod queue?

Should be ok, but you will need to modify the scripts due to the relative directory locations.

According to the error messsage, the problem is "SET value = ", it is empty instead of a number. The number is fetched through:

"SELECT MAX(postid) as postid FROM post"

This is a very standard query and should work. If you can run MySQL query either through shell or phpmyadmin etc, try out that query and see what error do you get. By the way, what version of MySQL do you run?

Run query but no mysql error. Got: Showing rows 0 - 0 (1 total, Query took 0.0002 sec)
SQL-query:
SELECT MAX( postid ) AS postid
FROM post

MySQL version 4.0.20-standard

Run script on two differents hosts and fresh install with two differents news servers (public and paid). Got same mysql error. I just noticed that Odoin got the same error:

It is possible your news server changed your organization to a default one. Please check the header of the messages posted from your forums. You should be able to check with your normal news reader, failing that, use Google.

The original script only checks the useragent. The reason I added the organization check is if two forums are using the same news server with the same useagent, then the messages posted from the fellow forums will be skipped! I can add an option to disable organization check with the next version. Weekend is coming...:) In the meantime, find:

if ($message['user-agent'] == $settings['useragent'] AND
$message['organization'] == $settings['organization']) {

and replace it with:

if ($message['user-agent'] == $settings['useragent']) {

I have the same problem. Forum pulls the posts made to it back into the topic so there is double posts..

This is referring to an older version. The new version has this function built into AdminCP.

Find: SET value = {$get_max_postid['postid']}
change it to

SET value = $get_max_postid[postid]

and see if you still get the error.

I've had this hack running since it was released. Haven't had one problem. It even brings more traffic to the site and I have users signing up to use the gateway only. Many people don't understand how to use a newsreader or are intimidated by one and this hack makes it easy for them.

Just wanted to say thank you for a great hack.

In the NNTP settings in your admin control panel. Check out the option for "organization check". See if that changing your values fixes your issues. It did for me...

The option "organization check" is already set. The problem is, that if I post a new thread in the forums, gateway.php is sending them to the newsgroups and creates not only the single post I?ve written before - it generates a second one too with the same message-ID.
When I take a closer look at these two postings with a newsreader, they appear as two different posts. One as thread starter (i.e. with msg-no. xxxxx1), one as a reply to it (with msg-no. xxxxx2).

In my forums it?s still a single post (and only the "organization check" prevents the re-import to the forums) - but not in the newsgroups. There you?ll find 2 postings. One as thread starter, the other one as a reply to it (marked with the prefix "Re:" ).
Haven?t had this problem before the update and changed non of the new updated files - and I have no clue, what?s going on...

Hi Lierduh, i still have problems posting messages to newsgroups from my forum :( but anyway i have given up debugging the same now..
now since the new version has some enhancements in admincp logging. i followed your update as mentioned here:
PS, if you want to inject the debug message into the cron log while using the vB3 Scheduled Tasks, edit the gateway.php file, change $do_cron_log from 0 to 1. It is only advised to use this for debugging purpose. As you may not want to fill the log up with debugging messages.I noted that degugging messages are only inserted when the task is ran manually else it just adds up entries in admincp like:

I?ve never seen this before in relation to this Add-On.

We might be dealing with the same issue but two problems here. The posts are removed from the queue once they are posted. In your case, the script might not realise the message was sent and tried to send it again while in fact the message was already sent. If anything, the problem should exist before the upgrade.

I think it is caused by Microsoft news server. Where it chucks out an 340 before taking the message.

I will check this out and fix.

Found the bug, please download again and replace the nntp.php file.

Ok, i'm finally making some progress on this! I'm finally able to post messages to usenet. New threads and replies are showing up fine.

When I saw there was an upgrade, I deleted the old files and replaced them with the new version you just uploaded a few hours ago. Only know I have found a new problem. This is a far smaller problem than before though.(I'm just relieved I can finally post!) Everytime I post a message when I check usenet the sender is show like this in the username field; "newthread[username]"

What have I done wrong?

I saw the new option for designating a name for all users to display in usenet, but I dont want everyone to have the same name. I want THEIR names to show up. I also don't want their real emails to show up. That's an invitation for spam. So I left the new option black.

Is this "newthread[username]" thing in place of the senders name a bug, or have I done something wrong?

It is certainly a bug. I have found one "$" missing in the code. This bug would only show when you allow the Guests to post (unregistered users to post).

I have fixed that and uploaded again. For the folks who just downloaded the v2.3.1, please do it again. To justify all the downloads. I have added a new feature in the script. When you change the $do_cron_log value from 1 to 0. The debug message will be emailed to the site email, even if you use the Unix cron job.

but those messages are not on the NNTP servers, mentioned above..
this is the major problem i have..

I do not understand the need for such. Do you want a working email address to be used, yet you change the username each time someone posts? What would the usernet user say? Why would you want to fake the identity while having a working email address? The normal usenet users will see the same user posting under different nicks.

The benefit of having the senders named changed and the email address stay the same is, only 1 email address has to be registered to the mailing list and people on the mailing list know the post is from more then one user.

Run 2.3.1 + fresh install vb 3.0.3 (reloaded scripts and re-installed forum with an empty MySQL database every time) with two differents news servers (public and paid). Got always same problem: MySQL error + posts correctly imported and threaded but with wrong statistics, it doubles the amount of posts : Threads: 4, Posts: 12 (see screenshot). I have to update counters to correct problem at every cron job.

NNTP Gateway_settings: all default.

Each post has the user name in the signature area any way. You can set the Common user as eg. "X Forum Gateway" and the footer will identify the real user.

Before that, insert one line:

Here is your problem. Do you only have this problem when you do a refresh installation? You will get this problem if you do not even have one post in the post table.

Otherwise your problem might be related to the version of php and MySQL. Basically it returned nothing when the query tried to find the max(postid). It returned 6 in your last message, now it does not return anymore.

Found another bug, at line 1083. I missed another "$".
Change
$from_header = "newthread[username] <$msgid>";

To
$from_header = "$newthread[username] <$msgid>";

(notice the $ before newthread)

I will check the debug/log thing later. I do not use the Scheduled Tasks makes it a little harder.

Please also add some customized security to gateway.php file (should only be able to execute via usergroup id 6 or some user ids which can be added to that file) coz @ the moment any damn user is able to run that file (this may create server load problems or other issues).. or possibly taking the gatway.php under admincp folder.

OK, I run it once more (scripts reloaded + forum re-installed with empty databse). I got nio more MySQL error. Ok, with all of these newer versions of the script my posts are finally showing up in usenet. And with the latest bug fix, the correct username is also showing. However, I still have one little hurdle. My post *only* show up in usenet when I run the gateway myself in debug mode. When the gateway script is auto-run via a scheduled task it downloads post into the forum at the correct time, but doesn't upload any local post to usenet. Very weird! Can you think of any reason why it would do that?

Another question; if I were to change the URL in the cronjobs to say gateway.php?debug=1 instead of just gateway.php, do you think that would work for me? Or would it cause any additional problems?

Didn't I mentioned the script will give error when you have empty post table? I am not sure why you insist on empty database.

I counted you have 8 posts imported and the forum shows 8 posts in there. If you had errors, then the counter could be out.
Weird! You're so right. I only take a look to Forum Statistics, 7 Threads/18 posts. I'll check the counter.

I'm using giganews for my PC's newsreader as well as for this gateway, and I love it. But I also have an account at http://individual.net, which is free. You have to register on their site and wait a few days for them to activate your account.

I have a giganews account. And it works fine. I have tested the script and everything seemed ok, but now my host tells me having a gateway like mine opens up security issues and they don't want me to run it anymore. Also, the cron job is too much juice.

So, I need a place where they will allow me to do a cron job and that is ok with the gateway.

I can use my giganews account. But if my new host had a newsserver and would save me the GGN fees, I'd sure go for it, but it's not necessary.

your hack is very dependable. Since the first release of you hack I noticed for some reasons the gateway isn?t exporting new threads in the forums into the newsgroups. I never found out why this was happening and in a post a few threadsites ago someone mentioned that too.

While bug tracing today I found something that I?ve never noticed before. I guess because I never run the gateway.php through the admincp/cronadmin.php. I always run the gateway as ?debug=1 in a seperate browser window, even if I had set the cronadmin.php to do this job. I only wanted to see the results time by time.

First I got to say that my host is running php as a module under cgi. So my account is restricted by various limitations through that.
My installed version of your hack is 2.3.1 (gateway.php,v 1.40 2004/10/26 14:53:00) modified with your posted additional bugfixes.

As said before, I struggled with the problem that some posts made in the forums doesn?t became exported to the newsgroups. They just never showed up there. I couldn?t figure out why this happend and I couldn?t see or find conditions, which caused this.
Everytime someone informed me about not exported posts, I posted a testpost in my forums and exported this one to the ng through the link http://www.myforums.com/forum/gateway.php?debug=1 - and it worked just perfect. So I never found out what the heck was going on.

Today I noticed that various posts haven?t been exported to the ng again. So I posted some testpost in the forums. But this time - dunno why ;) - I went back to the admincp and run the gateway through the cronjob in admincp/cronadmin.php - and whooops..what?s that ?! I had to recognize that something was going terrible wrong with that:

None of the new posts became exported to the ng - but posts from the ng became imported to the forum. So at least something seemed to happen in the background. Even if I don?t know what exactly.
At first glance I thought I could have uploaded gatway.php to the wrong DIR, uploaded 2 different gateway.php?s to 2 different DIR?s or/and had set the paths incorrect, double-checked everything, but all params were set correctly and gateway.php only exists in the DIR /forum/.

I wrote another testpost and tried to export this one the way I did it the last weeks through a single browser window and the adress http://www.myforums.com/forum/gateway.php?debug=1. Again, that worked perfect, imported and exported all posts absolutly reliable.

After that I thought give it a try and changed the admincron-param from ?./gateway.php? to ?./gateway.php?debug=1?. But that only leads to another error-msg:

I was having the exact same problem. Posts were coming into the forums fine but no post were being exported to usenet unless I manually went to the gateway myself. After a lot of frustration I deleted the usenet schedued tasks (all five of them) from the forums adminCP and decided to try one last idea. I decided to set REAL cronjobs to run the gateway instead of using vB's built in functionality. I set the cronjob to run 'http://www.myforums.com/forums/gateway.php' and now it works perfectly. For anyone else who is recieving posts but none of your post are being sent to usenet, maybe this will work for you as well?

Now that it works... Lierduh, this is a great hack. For me and my forums, this is the most useful vb mod on this site. Thanks for all of your work on it and I hope you keep updating this thing!

I used gateway.php in my limited test. It does not give errors. It is possible the error you received was caused by the php running as cgi. 'gateway.php?debug=1' will definitely fail by the way.

Using "http://www.myforums.com/forum/gateway.php" as the file name in the cronCP will fail on most servers unless 'allow_url_fopen' is turned on in php.ini. Even that, different versions of php will behave differently.

Since the lastest version sends the debug message through email (set $do_cron_log = 1). I would like to see someone with this problem post some debug messages.

If possible, the Unix cronjob is the preferred way to run the script. I think some ISP provides cron job through the ISP's control panel if you can not access to the shell. Because I do not use the vB3 cron, the test done on them is very limited. Also the vB3 cron has been designed to run some simple scheduled tasks. It was never designed to run complicated tasks as gateway.php.

My only addition is that you have to go into your AdminCP and update post counts for the changes to take affect. Try running gateway.php as well.i found the solution in this HUGE thread finally :)

Seems to be working ok but posts aren't being exported. I have vBulletin set up to run the task every 15 minutes. I just made a post and this is what I get when I run it manually...

All is working fine except signature and moderating queue.

1) Signature
Thread and profile links are working fine in outgoing posts. Signatures are showing in http forum but they aren't exported in outgoing messages. Signatures are showing usenames instead the real signature i.e. if username is esfron. signature display is:

2) Moderation
I have both threads and posts moderation enabled in a usenet forum but usenet posts are going directly to the forum instead of the moderatong queue. They aren't held back.

Any idea ?

1). Your profile links should not show since you have "nofooter 1"
Make sure when you post, "Show your signature" is checked. No matter what settings you have. Your user name will always be appended.

2). Your forums set up is wrong somewhere. If local posts show up in moderated forums, then it is nothing to do with the script.

The error you're getting is because the script can't connect to mysql. The script did run so you have another problem.

I can also run it via a Scheduled vB Task, but would rather have it as a cron job.

Okay, so I've been trying to read all 44 pages. :)

I used this hack in vb2 for a while, but then stopped using it because the "Find New Posts" became very bothersome for users when there were 1000's of new usenet posts showing in their search.

It looks as if some have found a way around this? I'd love to install this again and open up Usenet for my users.

I thought maybe I screwed up something on the install, so I reinstalled.

"which php" shows my php path to be:

/usr/local/bin/php

When I try to run the gateway.php via cron w/ the command of:

/usr/local/bin/php /home/<username>/public_html/forums/gateway.php

I get the following error message:

"nntp.php and mime.php files need to be in the './includes/' directory"

The nntp.php and mime.php files are in the ./includes directory. My gateway.php is in my /forums directory.

I can get it to run via the vB task scheduler. Are there any advantages/disadvantages w/ vB Task Scheduler vs cron? Does it matter?

Some commercial provider let you access the NNTP server via port 80 for instance. All you need to do is search for 119 in the gateway.php file, and replace it with 80.

I'm having a small issue. When a user posts to our usenet forum it gets posted to the relevant Newsgroup, however during the next import run means the posted message gets imported as a seperate post on the thread. I suspect it isn't supposed to work that way.

Leave the email as default (empty), then it will behavour the same way as before.

I think someone posted a modification about the chopping of footer for the usenet in this thread somewhere.

oops suddenly stopped receiving/sending usenet posts to/from my forum

I am assuming this is a problem from server end related to port 119, i tried confirming the same with provider he says nothing has been changed.

Any one can confirm what is happening ? I have scheduled this task to run every hour in my task manager of vbulletin.. Here is the log according to same :

Try running the gateway manually using the debug mode and see what message you get.

Also, if you host didn't change anything, maybe it's your new server?

I am changing newsgroup providers from Newsfeeds.com to Giganews.com and it looks like the message numbers might be different? Are message numbers the typically the same between different newsgroup providers? Can I assume it is safe to just "plugin" the new server info and messages will be brought in properly?

If the message numbers are different, then does the system link new posts via this number or does it use another way of referencing posts to threads?

Ok, I have another question that I can't seem to resolve myself. Everything is working fine, but one nagging issue. When the gateway.php file runs (via chron) it sends up and downloads all new messages. On the next download if my site sent up a message, it is posted as a guest user (see attached image). Is there a way to stop this double posting?

The server changes your organization header and inserts advertising, That is the reason why your own posts get imported. You usually should be safe to set it to 0. Are you sure the setting was 0 before your own posts got imported?

How about some kind of keyword filter so that if the thread has certain words in it the thread will not get posted. something like that would help the fight against spam.

Also a way to break the posting into a seperate process from the import will help the larger systems out quite a bit.

I have the script up and running on a new vB3.03 install. It seems as though when I d/l posts/threads (from usenet) that my overall post/thread count statistics increment at a 2:1 ratio (the main forums view stats to the right of the individual forums seem normal though). ie, if I were to have downloaded 10k posts my overall post stats would read 20k. Why would posts / threads be double counted in the overall stats (but not on the individual stats)?

This happened both when I initially downloaded threads as well as everytime I d/l additonal posts when the cron job runs.

oh yeah, and non-usenet forums that are strictly local do correctly update the overall and forum specific post/thread count at a 1:1 ratio.

Just use Giganews, plenty of us are using it for this purpose and it works fine! If you want to use something else than just do a google search for news providers, pretty much any good one is fine to use for the purpose of proving usenet on your forums.

People who spam your usenet forums should be treated the same as people who spam any other section of your site. Just ban them, how you decipline your users have nothing to do with this script.

Go into your admin panel and check the usergroup manager. Edit the usergroup for guests and change the name to whatever you want.

I just thought of this - but setting the sender as

abuse@localhost

might be kind of funny - some of the idiot spammers would collect that address - and start sending spam to the abuse account on their server :)

Sowwy my n00b question, but is anyone using this Hack in vB 3.0.4 ?

I have this currently installed on my production vB 3.0.3, is there anything I should pay attention when I upgrade vB to 3.0.4, do I have to do any additional steps after upgrading to ensure this Hack will continue to work? O_o

The script does not import the attachments. The attachment stats page in the acp lists them all and says 0 bytes I can click on the link for each and it goes to a page not found. Is there something I missed?

It seems to work fine with vb3.0.4 EXtremeTim I don't use attachments on my message board, so i coundn't tell you why it doesn't work or if it should work.

Is there a way to import emails into a specific thread?

I can import into specific forums or subforums, but that is all I have as an option from the drop-down box in the Admin CP when specifying NNTP Newsgroups. I see no place where I can enter in a specific URL or already established thread...Is this possible?
Currently with this hack there is no option for this. It wouldn't be a bad idea though and really shouldn't be to hard to pull off with how this hack is coded.

I did make one change to this script just a second ago so that I can now load in more than one newsgroup at a time. It was taking to long to load in all the messages of multiple groups and I didnt want to start with messages from that point only. Right now I am using my change to safely load in 4 newsgroups at a time which is my servers connection limit.

Lierduh, totally forgot to request this. Is there a way to block messages by their usenet username? For example it would be an extra way to block annoying messages by usenet denizens who like to OT to death certain forums under the same name.

When I try to prune in vb by using that name it never finds them either in the by name or by subject field.

Under the usergroup guest by default the title is "Guest - Unregistered / Not Logged In" and I have set the User Title to "Usenet Poster" how do I update all the old usenet posts to reflect the new user name?

I have two questions :

1. # of imported posts are different from those given by Outlook Express. Is there a way to search for duplicates ? (not that I trust OE, but...)
2. I'm wondering if it's legal to import msg from, say, MS newsgroups ? I mean it's not usenet

You just need to forward the email with the same subject, by an automated way naturally, then it will be imported into the same thread.

The gateway retreive more messages than OE. I tested GW with microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support, I ended with 25,261 threads and 75,698 posts, while OE retrieved 19,520 (OE showed something like 500K msg, then quickly went down to 19K)

Do you have any kill files on one of these?

I don't know, I'm not even sure what is a kill file :o

Table nntp_groups could be corrupted, as the database can not find the nntp_groups.MYI (the index file). You can try to rebuild the table, or just delete it altogher and let the script to create a new empty table.

I installed and it´s absolutely great!

Just a few questions:

I have 2 columns, 1 for the thread starter and 1 for the last poster and long e-mail addresses, that have not set a name, are destroying the layout. Is there a workaround for this problem already been posted? I read the thread until page 27.
Is it probably because i set the table for the mailaccount from 32 to 64?

How do i make to download an archive from a mailing list?

Wow! Just found out this hack but that?s such a useful hack, especially for new forums like mine to create some quick content!

I would be interested in integrating MailingLists and have two questions:

1.) Is it possible...
to use e-mail address x for creating threads in forum x
and
to use e-mail address y for creating threads in forum y
???

Yes. I am using it to pull from multiple email accts and publishing to several different forums.

I just noticed that there is no chariot return between quotes and messages posted on Usenet. I got the following:

My question is: How to insert (in the code) a chariot return after the quote ? Members can do it manually but it's not the best way.

The first three are working successfully with my account at news hosting. The last ones do not populate the forums. I've also tried the msnews.microsoft.com account and still cannot get the forums to show the posts. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Please open 'NNTP Gateway Newsgroups' in AdminCP once to complete DB upgrade first
