is it illegal if your friend bought a vbulletin, and then sent you the code...and you sort of removed the copyright line, and can't seem to get it back, and uh...how much is the punishment for this. And what can one do to redeem him or herself of this (crime?) action?

Yes, it is illegal, if you want to put your self in the clear you should go buy a copy your self, if you cannot afford it you should try to find another alterntive to suit your needs.

If you take care of it asap nothing will probally happen, but if you persist and continue to run unlicensed you could run into legal troubles

Just to make things clear, if they do own a license, but just have removed the copyright they need to return it. They can do that by reverting the footer template.

If they got the copy illegaly they need to buy a license or remove the info

If you dont want to publicly name them you can pm me.

If you have him start a thread on vBulletin.com i can give him specific instructions on how to restore the copyright :)

He's talking about 2 guys running the same licensed vBulletin on different domains, Zach.

can i keep it until i can pay for a license?
I have started a fund for no reason anyway and i am trying to get people to buy from me so i can get money. I guess i could use it on vB cos i really like how it is.

i am trying to get people to buy webdesign stuff from me.

No, because once Jelsoft finds out (and they will), you AND your friend will have that license pulled and be in legal trouble.

ok, that stinks though.
I will go uninstall it.

If you are running an illegal copy of vBulletin, why does it stink because you have to remove it? Try telling that to Macomedia or Microsoft and see what they tell you. ;)

It's better than being charged with a felony...

Close the site down and delete the PHP files until you've got your own copy of vB.

Although they may want the files deleted, your database can stay intact until you pay, then you get your own copy of the files to run that database with. :)

Your "friend" should be told not to share licences for vB, but as long as you shut down, he should be able to keep running. As long as he adds the copyright text. :devious:

Why did someone message me and tell me i must remove everything vbulletin from my harddrive, at 5:27 AM?
And Yes, i plan to buy a full unlimited-time license once I have the necessary money. You can consider the vbulletin files gone. I don't want to have to mess with this law stuff and get screwed for it. I prefer to be innocent without all of these criminal charges against me....

As long as you 'do the right thing' and remove vBulletin from your site until you obtain a license you will be fine.
