View Full Version : Two Sites, Same Data Base, Totally Different

I was working on something for a customer and then got a brain storm.
http://sanguin.net (original site main for now)
http://darksanctum.net (same database, same files, same folders)
They break no rules of the one install policy (although both are at this time licenced)
Searches, Posts, Forums all work seperatly (and now new tables for them)
Private messages are global between the two sites as are post counts and so forth.
Thought I would get some input (I know the style on dark santum bites !!!)
Please do not sign up unless they are of interest (not after members) you can see by looking the functionality.

Changed the header on http://darksanctum.net a bit...... intergrated a bit more so they look more seperate.
No clue yet what I plan to do with who's online

so u saying 2 sites can use the same databse so who registers on one will aut be registered on the other ?
what are the drawbacks of all this ? surely it cant be that easy just to set up to 2 sites and point em to same databse and voila ?

It is 1 set of files, one data base :)
Draw backs, none so far, maybe lack of dif id on each but blah that no draw back (could fix if I wanted)

Serious man, please tell us how you did it. But before let Jelsoft judge if this is against their policy :)

It is a bit of coding, also so far they leaning to each has to be licenced (no big issue to me).
This will not be a released hack (although I am installing it for a client later) but they own a few licences as well.

It does require a licence per site, found out from vbulletin.
I do the installs for a small charge, I have demo runnin on sites shown.

Aside for the 1 databse two sites:
-The site could have improved speed (It isn't very fast)
-I'm sure you're well aware of the style on Dark Sanctum
-Sanguinox color scheme is good, but I'm not exactly a fan of it. It's dark, dull and could hurt after staring at it for a long time.
Otherwise, good. :D

I love Sanguinox as it is, I will admit it is on the dark side, but seems to fit the site.
Darksanctum I have not really done much with yet, I am awaiting input from members of my site.
I know the style will be very dark though lol
As for speed, that is odd , everyone I know who hits it on cable or dsl love it.

I'm not on cable or DSL. Of course it will be fast for a broadband connection, but you should aim to make your site friendly to modem and broadband connections, not just the one.

It's not THAT bad, I was only saying that it could slightly improve. I apologize if I came across in the wrong way. It's not too bad though.

No you did not come across wrong way, if my answer seemed short it is due to I am coding and replying lol.

All your sites seem dead. Can't connect to any of them. I'm wanting to see this in action, too.

if you could get it so that the only thing the two sites share is the user table (not pm's, postcounts, posts) then i would recommend that jelsoft bought the technology and used it for vb.org and vbT
then hopefully they could move posts between the two sites as need be and still main their seperate looks, staffing and feels.

I beleive they could do it easy if they 'wished'
I know I could do this if I wanted to put the time in it.
