I just installed it on my vb3, I am doing template edits now, then file.... I have no clue on the rules of releasing an upgrade though lmao.... I never had so I never seen the 'rules' on it. That is if I get this done.

Hi all.... wow, I didn't know there was this much support for my hack :) I'm glad that you all enjoyed using it, and that you want a port for vB3.
I've been away from working with vB for a while now, in fact I've been away from all web work, but I am slowley starting to come back...
The whole vB story thing is something I was going to make a dedicated site out of, but alas the idea never took off. but I'm glad it's popular here.
A few people have asked me permission to port it, and I have given permission, as long as I get to see and test it before they release it, although saying this, I do plan (at some point) to release a copy for vB3 myself... more than just a port however, a whole upgrade.
Alas tho, I don't know when this is going to happen.
My suggestion, as it stands at the moment, is that anyone that's keen on working on this project, and porting it to vB3, get togther with me, and maybe togther we can work on building something great.. not just a simple port.. what do you say?
Please PM me if you're interested. Thank you.

I would like to port it myself (plus add some nice additions), but I just don't have the time. Ive given permission to a few diffrent people to port it (provided they show it to me and let me inspect it before it's released), but I don't know how far they've got with it.

... porting to 3.x, but stop it for now , because i have to decide if i want it like the orginal with all that different ways to write it or just have one single row ... (sorry, dont know how to say it in english better, hope you undertand what i mean.)

I guess at this point it's only fair that I tell you my plans relating to this hack. I myself, at the moment, have no plans to write my own vB3 version of vBStory. I have two reasons for this - first of all because I don't currently run any vB3 sites, and so don't have access to the resources I'd need to make it (nor would I have any reason to make one, seeing as I won't be able to run it on my own site - if you know what I mean?) And secondly because I'm currently in the process of writing my own stand alone version of the script using my own user login system for my own purposes (a site that I'm developing)
Now once I've finished my stand alone version of the script, I might release it to the public (with support for the vB login system) - or I might just keep it to myself (I don't know yet), you'll just have to wait and see. But for the foreseeable future, I have no plans on making a release. Sorry.
Due to this, I'm hereby giving permission to anyone out there that wants to make a vB3 version of the script to feel free and do so - on the condition that I'm given original credit (use 'Daniel Hollands' as the name, and link to http://theworldofdan.co.uk/) and that you should not profit directly from it (i.e. you're not sell it, only distribute it freely).
I understand there are several parties interested in producing a version of this. If so I would suggest that you all work on it together ? maybe you'll be able to put some features on it that I never though of (or rather didn't have the time to add to my original release). Although I'd watch out, after all, I am writing my own version of the script, so I might borrow some of your ideas :D
Anyway, good luck.

Any update to this? I really, really, really enjoyed the first version and would love to add this to my new communities using vb3.

I'm thinking of hiring a coder to do the port. I did this w/ a shoutbox hack for my vbadvanced site, and it worked well. IMO, any "free" port here, is going to take a VERY long time IF it even gets completed.
A few of us could get together, and probably get the job done total for under $300, splitting the cost between those interested. To make up for the cost, we could then offer it to others for $5-10. I did this w/ my shoutbox hack and have just about broken even (so thus far, it's really only cost me around $5-10). It was well worth it.
I realize that not everyone is serious enough to pay a coder...so this would be for those of us with more serious sites and the ability to pay for a pro.
I run a debate site that has some very gifted writers. www.onlinedebate.net These guys would LOVE this hack. So I take it seriously. ;)

$300 - heck!!! I'd do it for that!

:) I said we could get it done for UNDER $300. I use a freelancer bidding site. I get coders to bid on projects I need done for my site. The best quality for the cheapest cost always gets my business.
I also always have a completed project w/i a matter of a few business days. While I'm not suggesting that you cannot do the job, I'm merely stating that those I have dealt with in the past professionally, are quite professional, give me top quality stuff, and do so in an affordable and timely manner. They also have a lot to lose if they can't deliver, because it's a very large and popular freelancer site...they lose reputation there, which costs them work. They get ratings (sort of like ebay) based on their performance.

Well, I can tell you now, I don't like the idea of anyone making money off this idea, unless it's me... I don't think it's fair that MY idea should be taken, and used for others to make money, while I'm sitting here poor.
If anyone is going to make any money from this script, with all due respect, it should be me. Now if you're serious about being willing to pay for this script, then maybe we should talk (I wasn't going to release a free verson of the script, but as I have nothing else on right now, i could be tempted to do some premium work).
Give me a shout on MSN or something.

It's not an issue of fairness. It's an issue of demand and being able to fill that demand. If you can do it, great! The fact that you created it means that you know it best and you would be the logical frontline in this endeavour. I just didn't see too much interest in your part. I take my site quite seriously, and as such, I take the projects I bid out quite seriously (else I wouldn't be willing to pay). ;)
Yes, I'm serious about paying. But this largely depends upon independent cost. And that depends upon how much others are willing to chip in. I would need to see more interest from other contributors first, or at least know what you expect for a script like this. I won't bear the burdon of a large cost myself in this situation, if I know that there are others out there fighting for the job at a substantially lower rate.
Perhaps, to get started, how about this... Let's say you hosted the script on your site, and offered it to be downloaded for those who purchased the script? What would this cost be to each of your customers? You know that there is definitely an interest here. This isn't a one-time shot.
I would highly recommend seeing if such a scenerio is feasible as it is the most beneficial to all parties. It allows you to make much MORE money releasing it like this (as opposed to what a bid contract would allow) and it allows for many clients to get a copy of it.
If you did it just as a "bid contract" sort, it would mean that it was a customized product sale. And you wouldn't be able to sell it to others. While you could charge MORE for your work this way, it's a 1 shot deal, thus, getting far less income from it in the long run.
I don't use MSN. I'm quite serious about the project. Once you decide how you want to go with this venture, you can post here or send a pm here. Or even visit me at my site: www.onlinedebate.net if you like. Once we can agree on some of the basics, then I have no problem making time to "sit down" using a chat system to finalize the details. ;)

I don't know if anyone here is interested or not, but the latest version of this project is now online at http://unknowntales.net/
Now before you all go getting excited about a vB3 release or anything like that, you should know that this is an independently scripted revamp of the entire concept. It's not available for download or use on any other sites - it's my own site for my own purpose.
So why am I telling you? Well - why not, some of you enjoyed the concept of the interactive story site, so I figured I'd let you know that it lives on.
I don't have any plans for any more public releases of the script at this point, nor do I see anything like this happening in the future, but I am thinking about offering a remotely hosted story service that webmasters might be interested in signing up for - it's just an idea right now, but more may come of it soon.
I don't mind that the version of vBstory listed on this site remains active and available for download; however I do request that no further versions of the script be made.
Anyway, if you're interested, check out http://unknowntales.net/ and let me know what you think :)
