After much thought I have decided to re-open development on my journal add on, because gold is here and I have some new idea's I am expanding the hack itself :)

This hack will be released to the public soon in beta testing form, you will be allowed to run it with limited support, everything will not be added at first
so some might choose to wait. While I do plan on writting importers at some time they will not be added until after stable status.

This hack will require mysql 4, and probbly a late version of php 4

User Blogs-

- Show users buddys
- Show users latest forum posts
- Show users latest journal entrys
- User news box (allows user to post important news in their blogs)
- Show the user's buddys latest journal entrys
- User hot downloads box - based on attachments, allows users to serv files

Journal Entrys-

- All postbit functions from postbit area's in threads
- Now playing
- Mood
- Number of comments/last comment
- Paging
- Entry Folders/Sub entrys (for multiple entrys per day/week, so one day of alot of entrys dose not push older ones down the page as fast)
- Important entrys (act like sticky threads)
- Buddy entrys (allow you to restrict viewing to buddies)
- lock down entrys (allow you to have private entrys)
- Full comment system so others can reply to your entry
- Friend mods (you can assign friends on the board to help moderate/manage comments)

Posting/editing journal entrys-
- WYSIWYG editor
- Smilies
- Post icons
- mood's (in drop down or input box)
- Now playing (in input box)
- Can view list (allows you to give certain members viewing permessions for private/buddy entrys)

Manging news-

- all options from entrys as listed above

Usercp-

-- Journal permissions page
- Ban list (ban certain members from your blog)
- on/off switches for all blog options (listed in User blogs above)
- Make journal private/for buddies only on a global scale
- Add friend mods (input box)

-- File server

- Probbly will add a switch to the attachment manager to add certain files to this list

-- Web links

- Page will allow you to add links with descriptions, more on this later

Usergroup/access mask Permissions-

- Allow user to open journal (yes/no)
- Allow user to post new entrys (yes/no)
- Allow user to post comments in other memebers entrys (yes/no)
- Allow user to lockout admins (yes/no)
- Allow user to lockout mods (yes/no)
- Allow user to have friend-mods (yes/no)
- Allow user to have web-links (yes/no)
- Allow user to post private entrys (yes/no)
- Allow user to post buddy entrys (yes/no)
- Allow user to post important entrys (yes/no)

Stuff I know needs to go in but wont make it in for some time:

- Allow members to change the GUI of their blogs
- Import scripts
- Searching

So got anything you want to see added? Let me know :)

I was just looking at a seperate blog system (not vb related) that has the option of posting your entry to your existing livejournal blog as well. Seems like a brilliant way to get people to adopt your system while not giving up their lj.

Would it be possible to have categories of journals? Or multiple instances of this journal install?

Purpose: To allow more than one type of journal. Users can choose which "journal" they wish to post their entry.

For example:
Blogs
Sales Updates
Short Stories
Homework Assignments
Travel Reports
Whatever

Multiple journals on the same board would require that admins are able to name them, grant permissions for each, and go crazy with all the possibilites!

Also, could all of the things like "ratings" or "mood" (the things that IMHO may not be appropriate in all types of journals) be OPTIONAL by the admin?

My hope is that this journal will be able to accomodate businesses as welll as the less formal types of boards.

Thank you, Brad.loo, for being willing to tackle this again! :)

I would too, but a possible addon feature i have for you would be to allow the user to specify a RSS feed and get journal/blog info from somewhere else, just an idea.

I really can't wait to use whichever vb3 journal comes out first and is the best, as is it will be a GREAT subscriber only feature for any board.

feature request:
link from profile with journal entry name
buddies view private entries
search for journal
search through journal
display all journals
display all entries on multiple pages
attachments
HTML allowed in entries
journal catergories
only certain usergroups can create entries
user has ability to disable comments
currently playing music
emoticon legend on add reply and add comment
flood checker
ability to personalise/customize journal colours, fonts and background
New journal entires and comments appear in new posts and searches
admin override that you can edit, delete, or lock
It must have an archive by year / month
A mini calendar with a link to every day posted
If several posts in one day, than than they are united under one date, not repeating it several times.
A WYSIWG panel (as HiveMail)
Download as txt file hack integration and Vb code in titles
Can have multiple attachments and place them where you want $attachment01 $attachment02 style
Zodiac and Age hack integration
Notify me when someone replies to this journal

Thank you to people who are working on Journal hacks/integration. The efforts are appreciated by us plus all of our users. Since this is a call for features, I will add a couple comments. Some of it might be redundant; I skimmed thread but might have missed something.

ability to easily add/remove Journal moderators in admin cp
ability to disable private entries in admin cp
a "report" feature for lurkers to notify the moderators
link from user postbits through to user's jorunal
some sort of paged organization, either by month or number of entries
search capabilties (of some kind)
a "last edited by" forced feature that shows if user edited journal or if moderator took action
integration with a common user warning system (yes, I know this would be a huge pain)
ability to list or display journals in order of who is most active/popular in last week or month (not since beginning)

I know these are some crazy requests, but since this is an open call for suggestions I thought I would just put down some ideas. Again, thanks for the work on Journals.

Here are some more comments:

create ability of entries and comments to apply towards poster's overall post count
allow "ignore" function to be active in journal area
ability for journal moderators to block or de-activate a specific poster's ability to use the journal area (similiar to forum-specific suspensions)
ability for journal moderators to lock a specific poster's journal (without suspending the actual poster)
ability for journal writer to decide if they do not want replies to a specific entry
restrict the length of journal entries to match the number of characters allowed in normal posts (or allow a separate maximum length for journal area)
ability for people to convert from other journals/blogs and transfer all of their material to the message board's journal area (I know it is crazy request, but people always ask for it)

I just offer these comments, feel free to sort out which (if any) are useful or relevant. Again, thanks for the work with journals.

- Allow user to open journal (yes/no)

Also is it possible to make the journals only viewable by certain usergroups, regardless of private or public entries? EG, guests can see that they are there but not read them unless the owner hits an override button.

Hi,
sorry for trivial question. Can you explain me litle what is blog? I know that it is kind of writing system, that you can pos your writing. But what is it genneraly used for? What is the diferrence between blog and news? It just another name for CMS? I also heard, that some blog-site cooperate somehow..... just still not clear enough to me...

thanks
Kafi

blog actually is short for web log.. it was originally intended as a sort of online journal/diary.. except that they are normally open for public view and comment.. nowaday, people use them for link spam and weird stuff..

i have never been interested in them, but everyone seems to be.. was hoping one of these people who said they could code one in a few days would hurry up after these past few months and get one out.. i may not be into them, but i am sure some of my users would be and it would be a decent addition..
