View Full Version : Faster IP banning

When I first created my spider-hack for vB2, I've ported the IP-Ban-Function, but I've soon found out, that it heavily slowed down Who's online, so I've tweaked it to use a single REGEX rather than wading though a huge array, containing all listed IPs, which resulted in a significant speed gain, so I've ported the change to the IP-Banning as well, since we're banning a huge list of proxy-IPs from our forums.

I can't really give proof that it would reduce server load since single users won't recognize any difference, but I'm quite sure, that it does. If someone with a big forum using a huge list of IP-Bans can confirm any noticable changes, I'd be happy, if he'd share it with us.

Notes:
1. I can't confirm any siginificant changed for now.
2. It useless to install it on a small forum and/or if your list of banned IPs is small.
3. If you think, it's useless, just don't install it. No one forces you to do so ;)

PS: I would be happy, if you only click install, if you really installed it. I need to know who is using it and I need some feedback from users, that really use it.

Thanks in advance.

Could a mod be so nice to move this thread into the 'Board Optimization' forum? :)

This just tweaks a function that was always there. No visible change, so screenshots won't show you anything new.
