I think it depends when and where they are used. I find the marjority of newbies (who also tend to be very young) on my forum have no idea of the concept of smilies and just try and use every single one somewhere in there post.

I love using smilies :) I've got into the habit of suffixing every sentance on msn with a smilie as anyone who talks to me on there will tell you ;)

If I'm creating a forum, I'll only use Dark Project Studios's smilie set as I believe that's one of the best set's ever created, but hey that's just me.

Secondly, I ask for permission and I'll give credit in the credits page or footer of the forum. :)

Hi. My name is Rose. And I'm a smilie addict. *ducks*

I don't overuse smilies as Lee suggested many of his members do (and boy do they!) However I try to add them whenever and wherever possible to help get my point across.

When you communicate with someone face-face or by voice, it's easy to get your message across the way you want to with body language and tone of voice. However when you're dealing with a medium of simply text on a screen ... it can be hard to get the right message across. So ... smilies are useful.

:D

Ditto--they're the best smilies I've used, including the newly released vB3 ones.

I think the over use of smilies is highly tacky and unprofessional, whether it's a 'general content' forum or not. There's no need for say 100 smilies to be used on a forum. I've even seen some companies use hundreds of smilies, and some are way out of line for such companies; smilies such as one sticking their finger up or saying F***. It's totally unprofessional.
