Unread PMs in template?

Is it possible to get the number of unread PMs in a template? I have tried adding this feature of my "header" template, but I can only do this using the phrases (meaning I can't get just the number).

Anyone able to get this working?

$bbuserinfo['pmunread'] should contain the users total unread pm count.
