one of my members was asking me to restrict people from specific forums or threads via post count

ie you need 100 posts to get into the downloads section
200 posts to get into the over 18's section and so on

i know that people on this forum would love such a feature

Look into the promotion system and secondary usergroups ;) it would be better as a hack because i always have too many extra usergroups if i added this one simple setting it would cause me to have 5 extra usergroups

(COPPA) Users Awaiting Moderation
Administrators
Moderators
Registered
Super Moderators
Unregistered / Not Logged In
Users Awaiting Email Confirmation

Custom Usergroups
Title Primary Users
Miserable users
Normal Banned members
Registered 0
Registered 1
Registered 2
Registered 3
Registered 4
Troll Banned and those are my current usergroups that have these promotions

50 posts = Ability to use the Arcade
100 posts = Ability to use Signatures
500 posts = Ability to upload a Custum Avatar
1000 posts = Ability to use Custum User Title
5000 posts = Ability to upload a Profile Picture

i was thinking maybe add it within the forum settings
need's 'x' amount of posts to access this forum

i also made myself a little more clear in adding Specific forums and threads not just the forums in general

I agree, or there could just be a coded addon in future releases for a forum option, that let's you specify a minimum amount of post counts before the user can enter/post in that forum.

Why add a feature thats already in vB?

Faranth: it currently can only be done via promotions and usergroup permissions, but what if you want it to be non-usergroup related? Then it's no longer possible with vB3 itself, hence, a hack for that is well in its place.

I could make this, but I don't know how much time it would take, and right now I can't risk starting on it and ending up having spent far too much time on it, yet...

Its not hard to add one usergroup to be accomplish this, i already have a large forum setup with tons of usergroups and they all seem to be working fine :)

i'd have to make 5 extra usergroups to accomodate just one change and that would be only for one forum
or post
it doesn't seem worthit :S
ps if it can be done show me how

how do you figure 5 extra usergroups?

Perhaps with the secondary usergroups it can be done, that is, if promotions can work on secondary groups...... I wouldn't know, haven't had the chance or time to look at the usergroups code much, yet :)

Ive been working extensily with vB3's features, :) you can promote a user to a secondary usergroup :)

Then this hack is not that necessary, I guess.

Though I can see msimplay's problem of having to add 5 (for instance) new usergroups for this. What if you have 5 forums that each require their own level of postcount?

Having it as a forumsetting would still make sense, but it's not TOO much work doing it via usergroups, as I had originally thought :)

anyway its still a hack request i'd like it to happen
i mean they changed quite a few things for vb3 to do with usergroups like the custum user titles
and avatars post count but i really would like to be able to do this without messing about a million times with the usergroups coz my promotions have set up if i added a forum count for say 150 posts i'd have to re-adjust the promotions for each time i have to restrict the postcount for a forum

on my promotions 150 is between the settings for
it would get complicated if i wanted to do it for more forums
and sorry about the 5 thing i just checked it is easier then i had thought but still the hack would be easier once set up

500 posts = Ability to upload a Custum Avatar

Ok, so they get added into a secondary usergoup each time, they can be apart of 100 secodary usergroups. ;)

I'd like for this to happen too. Doing it through usergroups is possible ofcourse but a hack would be better...

Considering the age of this thread... It's still better to be done via a promotion.

However if you want the hack I'd suggest requesting it in a new thread.
