As the old announcement became just a pure battlefield, we've removed it now.
I contacted KuraFire in ICQ and we have spoken about these things personally.
KuraFire will change the HTL to Produce Simple but Releasable txt files out of the HTL files, which can be uploaded when you release a hack.
So, whenever you release a HTL hack, be sure to also upload the txt install files as well.
That way noone has to use the HTL if don't want to, and on the other hand, there is no extra work for the Hackauthors to release their hack (ok, appart from uploading extra files (phrases.txt, templates.txt...) ;))
We hope everyone is content with that descision. Both, KuraFire and the vb.org Staff just want to get the best for the community, just sometimes have different opinions.

While it is obvious that Americans and Brittish spell words differently, I find it sad to use replacement variables to replace either into the other. It'd be just as retarded for Stefan to replace every english word with its german counterpart...

It's also very problematic for any hack that has something to do with colors. If a piece of hack code has the variable $colour, and the variable gets renamed to $color in the support thread of the hack, troubleshooting can be a nightmare.

color is the proper coding name for it... not the brittish spelling :P

Yes.... but I'm not even british and I learned how to spell it as colour. Why is color the proper spelling then?

Pleaseeee lets not start this argument again lol. It is official that COLOUR is the proper spelling, it is an english word, simple as that. :)
Any one else get the feeling from Xenon's post that one day we will come on here and everything is German?
Also if you want proof the correct spelling is COLOUR, then look in the dictionary, i dare you to find color :)

Hi everybody,
I am very happy that Stefan and Faruk had an evaluation of the current situation and came to an understanding of what would be best.
It has always been clear on the vBulletin.org web site that there is quite a difference in the quality or complexity that some source code modifications bring. Many members, even some staff members like Chen have tried their best to find easier ways to install these modifications. Some users use eachother install.txt modules to create an easier interface for implementing custom phrases, templates and/or find/replace source code sections in the original files, or even total backup setups for the MySQL database changes. I believe it was Chen who created a hack installer that created some sort of file which was easier to read by a default installer and a generator for this. It has brought the same type of discussion as I see now with the introduction of the HTL. I believe it was the effort of Floren that took the install_hack.php file to a second level where it had step by step upgrade, install and revert and/or uninstall options for 'hacks' released on this site. With as alternative the .txt file.
Now the HTL is introduced which helps keep track of the installed hacks and their file changes, upgrades and whatever else. It is a great attempt to get things to another higher step, where both novice as experienced vBulletin source code modders can update their current releases or create new releases without too much hassle, with files which can be installed quickly through one system by the end-user. With control for upgrades and changes. This helps the quality of hacks and gets a better overview in my opinion.
I agree that there should be a downloadable .txt file, but this does bring a limitation for those users - it will be more (old way) work to install it, work on the files and that isn't always as easy to the novice users, as shown in the past. But that doesn't mean a reasonable readable understandable file that can open in notepad or pico shouldn't be provided.
The first version of the HTL is made to be a public release of 'what is can do'.
Feature suggestions and bug fixes will be released in the 1.x or 2.x releases for vBulletin version 3.x - at the moment the next release looks like 1.1 which will include an option to generate a .txt file without too much hassle. And I am sure more limitations that wasn't discussed or wasn't enough time to code in, will be included in future releases.
Adding on to the posts in this thread;
I really did not see the HTL post discussions as a 'war' which is now over.
Everything that is new, innotive and untested, brings confusion and misunderstanding. This is seen all over and hopefully when things become more clearly, those type of posts wear down. (Of which I am sure of, besides that, the rants about it could have been a bit more moderated to stop provoking others to participate without really understanding what they are blabbering about).
Thank you Stefan for posting this thread,
and thanks everybody else for reading it.
Productive, constructive or destructive, feedback is always welcome for it results in progress.

One of the persons in question has been strongly warned and will be banned on the next offense. We have no tolerance for rule violations, so if you see any such hacks, report them.

If you'd read the forum rules, you'd see they already added that a readable text file should be included.
And the staff is removing the threads posted without install instructions.
Because the HTL doesn't offer this option, doesn't mean the authors can't make .txt files themselves. It is not the job of the HTL, but a handy feature (for 1.1).

Personally, I'm glad my shoutbox got removed because I had it HTL only. For ++++ing sakes, when I don't see a rule in the announcement, it's hard to know if it's a rule. Then I go ahead and release a new HTL-only version of my shoutbox and it was days later that the announcement was updated (and assassingod claimed that it was always there when it obviously wasn't, but let's not get into that). I'm sorry, but that pissed me off immensely.

Now you know the rules. Also, do not try getting around the profanity filter again.

Not when I released the HTL only version. Of course, I only heard about it being a rule a few days after. It sure does take a long time to update a ++++ing announcement, eh?

FYI: http://everythingvb.com/forumdisplay.php?f=36 HTL hacks can be released there, without a text installer.
We've opened that forum for the people who wish to release bigger hacks that they've made using the HTL but who don't want to waste many hours on making a .txt installer themselves, and rather want to release their hack now and do the .txt installer once HTL 1.1 is out.

It would not be a wise idea to directly oppose an administrator. Now read that in an ominous tone.

I would not consider it a "waste" to write a .txt file. I know of no product manual out there that requires a proprietary system to read.
IF YOU WANT TO RELEASE A HACK HERE, THE INSTRUCTIONS MUST BE POSTED IN A TEXT DOCUMENT. There are no exceptions, and we hold no reservations from deleting hacks and banning repeat offenders.
