I might, but VB3 is so powerful... I just hate its template/style system to death.

I will never install a vB2 board again. I can't live without vB3, especially it's style inheritance system... it is a huge improvement.

vB3's code is much more optimized, so there's no reason to stick with vB2 except for the hacks, and this should not be a problem as more hacks are released and updated.
I'm still on a vB2, when vB3 Gold releases and I test it all out on my localhost board, maybe then I'll convert ;)

I will stick with vb2.3 for my big sites, but I will convert my small sites eventually. I acually installed vb3 on a new forum that is designed to get the political and other debates out of my other forums and I must say, IT IS NICE.. http://www.thewaterfountain.com/forums

Im using vB3 now as i just started a new forum. Its alot different to vB2 in all aspects and some can seem daunting especially to people who dont know PHP or understand the new template scheme etc.
But i realised the only way to learn is to install one and get used to it so thats why im using it for my new forum, Only problem is having to now do all of the php edits again when i upgrade (IF i upgrade)
I'm still going to install a vB2 as a test board for support purposes :p

I'll be sticking with vB2 until at the very least vB3 goes final..
Even then, I'd rather wait until the Arcade and Journal mods are ported to vB3.
I haven't really liked the new admin panel or the styles used for vB3 since it was released.. When I do upgrade, I'll be making it look much like a vB2 in layout.

For right now I plan on staying with vB 2. I guess you might say I'm a chicken. I'm afraid to change over without someone to be right beside me helping me along the way.
I'm not a great one for knowing what I'm doing. I've learned a lot yes on making my board look the way it does, but I have to follow step by step the hacks and changes.
Shoot, I'm still afraid to upgrade even to 2.3.3 and now 2.3.4 is out. I don't want to mess up what I have.
This is my board, and if you look when I set up the board, I still have upload in my url.

you SHOULD at least update calendar.php :) regradless of anything
but the longer you wait to upgrade the worse it will be
I think the best way to upgrade is to make a backup and use the backup on a local server and try it out that way first..... if everything runs smoothly and u dont find anything missing, then the upgrade should do fine on your live board

Let me see if I have this correct...The longer I wait, the harder it may be to upgrade?
So a process that is purposly for the sake of improving the product, will make it worse later?
You guys need to listen to yourselves sometime. The whole point is to improve where problems are found. I expect those problems to be gone by the time this product goes gold. Not hindering me during the upgrade process.

A product is always improved, they are still releasing vB2's now :)
So it does not matter when you install a board, or upgrade, if you want it completely up2date or as secure as they get at the moment, you will have 2 upgrade.
You do not have to upgrade to vB3 now if you do not want too. But remember vB2 wont be around forever once they focus on vB3.

Well, this thread got me interested, so I made a backup of the current vb2, went thru all the upgrades (I was still running 2.2.1 (don't shoot me), pretty painless actually and my board is hacked to death. All told, including indexing, updating counters, etc, it took about 9 hours (34K members, 700K posts). There are some "gotta have" hacks I'm wating on before I can switch over.

I upgraded to VB RC 2, but my users really hate it alot. I like the admin features alot more like the ban option (i have to use it alot), but my users really really relaly hate it. Too a degree that there was a petition that everyone signed for them to switch back to VB 2. VB3's template system is way way too sophistacated, I missed the days of it taking a half hour to customize a VB2 board to a spiffy look, then the one month wait for VB3 to figure out its template system from hell. I hope the manual comes out soon

dude its the vB2 system wtih conditionals, nothing more :)
maybe a new appernce but not much else :)
what DONT your users like about it, ask them why. alot of people HATE Windows but there still using it? ok bad example but they dont know WHY they hate windows or why windows is always messing up 90% of the time its their own damn fault :)
but it only takes about 10 min to customize a board with vB3 with conditinoals it saves tons of hacking that would have needed to be done in vB2
i wont even work with vB2 boards if i can help it

I'll most likely be sticking with VB2 for several reasons.. 1) I've just now got comfortable with how VB2 works and writing code for it... 2) I've spent alot of time getting the look and feel of my forum exactly how I want it... and 3) If it ain't broke, why fix it?
I have VB3 running on my PC and it is nice.. But I'm happy with my VB2 so I'm sticking with it.

writing code for vB2 is meh, im much more confortable with vB3 i learnd on it and from what ive looked at in vb2 vB2 looks and is sorta sloppy. in comparsison.

As of right now there's not any that really concern me. I've manually added all of the security fixes myself, and the other minor bugs don't really bother me. Besides, I'm sure there's plenty of undiscovered VB3 bugs aswell. As long as you use ANY forum software bugs are something that you'll just have to deal with.

I haven't noticed any slowness with the admin cp.
And I think my bandwidth is just fine as well.
But I will not be going back to vB2, purely because I love the vBulletin 3 template system, it's much more organized and I can customize all of my styles simultaneously.
Not to mention how organized the code is, I've noticed that installing hacks is actually easier than installing them on vB2. Don't ask why, it just feels easier, ya know?

That's what I was going to say. If you just bought a license, you might as well start with vB3 RC3, it'd be the best route to take. Going back and using vB2 really wouldn't work out well for you in the future, even if you have had some experience using it in the past

I like VB2 for all the skins hacks. I recently loaded VB3 on a local system to mess around with it since my board members don't like downtime even for a better board =/. But VB2 has so many mempires, and even thought VB3 is better and faster it won't replace VB2 it will just make VB2 less on demand and then they will stop.

Shinra moved away from vb2 a little over a week ago.
It was my decision to do so as I couldn't stand how horribly Palmer had hacked in all of these features, we were running vb2.0.3 hacked up to oblivion, and eventually most of those features stopped working and then getting anything more than the usual done was a dificult task.
So I figured instead of fix the bugs, why not work on upgrading shinra.
you guys got a few bugs in your upgrade scripts that I had to fix ;)
so um yeah, if you do plan on upgrading to vb3, make sure you copy your forum to a secure location, and try upgrading it on your own if you run a version as old as mine.
otherwise you're going to get boned during the vb3 upgrade scripts.

It may be more powerful, but only due to the phrase and if condition system. Structurally the design is poorly implemented for anyone wishing to modify their board in a major way :)

you see, someone is on my side!!!!
if there was a way to convert my skins and have a admin panel i like then id get vb3 in a sec
nope, i won't go back to vb2.
vb3's code has so much improved, much better to work with
I remember one time when all "old school VB2" coders used to think VB3 is really bloated. :D
