News Box v5.1

[VBDev]

With this hack, you'll add on your board a news system that you control from the admin control panel. These news, you choose them, they appear on the forum in a box, with marquee text viewable for each member. They can be used, to display a general message to your members ...

you can insert VBCodes and smilies. You can choose to display or not the news box on the forum.

Improvment in comparison with VB2 version :
- Display of a special news if the user is unregistered. THe news is a link to the register form.
- Use of expand/collapse system to reduce the box. The position of the box is saved

Amelioration par rapport aux precedentes versions VB2.xx :
- Affichage d'une news supplementaire si le visiteur n'est pas enregistr? lui disant qu'il n'est pas enregistr?, le texte est un lien qui lui permet d'acceder a la page d'enregistrement
- Utilisation du systeme expand/collapse pour reduite l'affichage de la boite de news avec enregistrement de la position de cette fenetre

i think that it is interfering with the code for the side bar. If I were to stick it inside some table code would that fix it?

- I updated the .zip, just replace your news.php with the new one, I forgot to translate these 2 words ;)
- Add </div> at the end of the news_fin template, it should bo OK after ;) (I modify it in the zip too)
- To modify the text font, search in the news_news template : $new[comments] and replace by <font face="...">$new[comments]</font>

before the last ?>thats will sort it for you, REMEMBER to CLOSE you board before doing this and when done remove the debug code.

When you add more than 1 news item.

It displays it incorect, it places the next item under the first BUT does not make the news box bigger to put it in.

Suggestion.
why not make it so it scrolls inline like

1. First news post | 2. Second news post | 3. Third news post and so on and so on.

Also maybe have an option to choose the color of the text so you can alternate

the colors, HOT NEWS in red and say other news you can put in another color

- BUT does not make the news box bigger to put it in. Sure of it ? I just tried and all seems to be ok for me, have you a SC ?
- To make news scroll inline just remove <br> from the news_news template
- To choose the color of a news item, use VBCodes !! ;) [.COLOR=red]Text for the news[/COLOR]

Im sure this is a nice hack judging from what I have seen so far. Unfortuantely when I tried to install it, the bottom bar has disappeared, the news doesn't scroll, and it sits at the far right corner, mind you, on top of the news table.

I went thru the instructions twice step by step and I keep getting the same thing. I originally thought it may be a conflict with another hack or two I have installed, yet I'm unsure.

Anyone have any ideas?

Nice hack! :) I have one request though... it would be better if instead of all the news piling up underneath each other, they just scroll continuously through a cycle. eg., news 1 scrolls, 2 second wait, then news 2 arrives.

I like everything to look neat and tidy on my forum. ;) If you aren't going to implement this - do you know how I could?

I could not use the BBcode for this hack. Whenever I put a BBcode (like url, img....) in the comments it didn't show up in the news box (the script doesn't parse the bbcode)
One more question: I don't want to put the $news_affichage in FORUMHOME template but I want it to be in HEADER. I did put it the HEADE but it didn't show up. What should I do?

Ahhhh Just noticed a flaw when checking the hack with Mac's Safari browser. The text box stretches for however much news is contained within... gah.

Any idea how to have browser detection for this, so that either the news hack isn't there for Safari, or at least closed?

i've installed it and it works great..however i am having troubles with some skins ..it just stretshed them to max..i have to place it over the board banner so the tables keep looking ok see the the 2 pictures bellow ..any idea what is wrong here?

@Matthew : herm, I've never used the modcp but I think that if you do the same modifications in admincp/index.php and modcp/index.php and that you upload the news.php in the modcp directoy there would be no problems ;)

Haven't read this entire post, but this hack shouldn't be final.

The templates have french hard coded in them, and you can't input news with apostrophes in them; it doesn't look like slashes are added before the database query.

Once you get all the little bugs and typos worked out, it works nicely.

One suggestion, is to have a text area for the input box instead of a one line input box.

And another little thing, when I collapse the news box, it will not remain that way when I enter a subforum and then go back to the index. What's the use of that function if it's not configured?

but i have a suggestion.
how about if u have built a own vbulletin page and let the users type in new from this page?
It would be better if avereybody could give some information in the newsfeed.
Would it be possible to create something like that?

EDIT: Thanks guys, i read the followups and figured it out that it was missing a debug line in config.php.

Works like Charm, it will be cool if the news ticket is going vertical, instead of horizontal.. because when we add more and more news as seperate ones.. we need a big amout of placeholder for the news. If its like a news ticker, which sends one news at a time but in horizontal or vertical way.. it wud be cool.

In the index.php, when u insert those codes below the other bits, please do this:

Instead of adding:

,
'danews',
'danews_news',
'danews_fin'

Replace tat line with this:

'danews',
'danews_news',
'danews_fin'


Then go to the variable that is right above 'dannews', and add a comma after it in order to get ride of that parase error.

If u dunno wat i mean.. check this example:
Before:

'Test'
,
'danews',

After:

'Test',
'danews'.


As you can see, your comma is what was causing the pbm. I had this erorr and i done exactly like wat i am suggesting u and it worked :)

a lot of small bugs, typos, french translation and also a mixed up xml language file is not the way to share a hack !

it`s gonna be usefull hack when you remove all small bugs...

For example a can`t do last step with vBulletin Options addon in version 5.1 (in version 5.0 it was in text file and it wasn`t able to make it at all). In install file i reach vBOptions page with button provided, where i can add new options BUT i can`t do it proply (as it says in istructions) and i don`t know what i`m doing wrong or it bad istructions or it something else...

It seems that you're trying to install it in English, so please open news51_langage_en.xml and change the version number from 3.0.0 to 3.0.1. I had this same error and fixed in this way. :)

And thanks to the coders of this hack, I really liked it. :)

i just installed this hack on my site and i'm VERY please. it's everything i wanted.

but i was wondering how i would go about adding "$news_affichage" onto other pages on my forum such as in my vba gallery home page and my vba cmps page. i already tried adding them in the templates but nothing shows up. what do i need to do in addition to make them show on ALL or most of my pages?
