I'm back - Sorta... Plus: UK UCAS applicants? You get any replies yet?

My absence as of late has been due to intense revision for my January AS Economics exams (Units 1 & 3) which are on Friday 16th Jan:paranoid:

I have missed much recently; Lee and Steve becoming vB.org mods... RC1 being bodged up... RC2 being released...

As a result, I have had less time for my online activities: Suffice it to say I haven't viewed my site for several days, have not been remotely active on Core Forums or some other sites I visit regularly, nor have I been active here or on vBulletin.com...

I hope that I can get back into the swing of things by releasing only a few but well-coded vB3 hacks over the coming months (mostly after next Friday), but I hope to get some of my old vB2 hacks ported over, like my latest work in progress, Attachments per Forum for vB3:rambo: (hopefully to be released this weekend)

I have had some new ideas for hacks, and although I will be fairly inactive at times, I will be here as often as possible with my new college schedule:ermm:

Talking of UCAS Applicants: Did you get replies from any Universities you applied to yet?

I got offered a place at 2 universities just before Christmas!!!:D (I only bothered applying to 2 anyway)

I applied to UCN (University College Northampton) and Luton University, to study Internet Computing:)

I firmly accepted Northampton (as it is where I want to go), and it appears they want me to go there, as they lowered the entry requirements significantly:rambo:

I need to achieve 160 UCAS Tariff points (equivalent to 2 Cs at A2) with a minimum of 2 Ds at A2 level!:rambo:

I am currently studying:

German A2 - Predicted grade @ A2: C
English Literature A2 - Predicted grade @ A2: B
Maths AS (with Stats) - Predicted grade @ AS: B/C
Economics AS - Predicted grade @ AS: C

Assuming I achieved my predicted grades (the highest predicted for Maths being a B), this would give me 270 UCAS Tariff points:eek:

With my E grade French AS Level (20 UCAS Tariff points), I can afford to achieve the following grades:

German A2 - D
English Literature A2 - D
Maths AS (with Stats) - E
Economics AS - U

This would give me 140 points, plus the 20 from my AS French, giving me 160 points in total:banana:

Suffice it to say: I have very little pressure to work ultra-hard, however I will work to the best of my ability, to ensure that I do not have a mis-hap like last year:)

If anyone else has recieved offers, post what they are, where you applied, what you need to get, what you are studying and what you were predicted!:D

Quite alot of people from college have not - I am one of about 20 in the college who have, and am one of 3 who have confirmed their offers :)

Guess because I got mine off early and they were local, it was dealt with post-haste ;)

Nice looking college. They've got a nice webpage as well (something I find rare amongst schools).

I've started a degree in Computer Science, and my university provides many web oriented courses covering PHP, Java (just finished an easy course in it), and SQL. Although, the widely more focused languages are the .NET technologies (C#, C++, ASP). I'm looking forward to them. :p

Apparently our single internet course does it, I've seen people trying and failing to do the most simple PHP/HTML things. One of my modules did JSP & Servlets which I hated, I'd have got a top mark if we could have chosen the language to do the assignment in.

Well in my computing coursework we're doing something that would take me a day in PHP + HTML/JS but my tutors insist that those who do it via programming find it harder to answer questions in the exam and normally drop by a grade below the others so i'm having to do it in access which I hate. The fact is they make the exam questions suited to those who use ms access so that the people who have the ability to program can't answer as easily. Are you referring to the comp science course at bristol Lee?

Component Based Software (which was the JSP/Servlet stuff) was part of my Comp Sci degree. The only other web stuff I did in it was very, very, very basic HTML and perl in the first year, however there is apparently a really easy module where all you do is install Apache and do some more basic HTML in the final year, and going by what I heard I could have done it in a week *lol*

They started a new Internet based degree this year which I would have liked to have done as it seemed fairly usefull in comparision with what I've studied during the last three years.

My course will give me skills in most areas of computing (1st year), then I am specialising in Internet Computing (2nd & 3rd years), which will mean I get to do more useful stuff;)

I've one more exam to take to get my Honor's, if I drop out now then I'm just stuck with a plain BSc which makes you look lazy and incapable. Besides I don't want to and can't really afford to stay at Uni for another 2-3 years.

Especially considering this new crap they are planning on bringing in in 2006 to increase fees... it's ridiculous ... :(

Its stupid, its already ~?1,150 for a full-time student a year, so a typical 3 year course, with a work placement year that you have to pay for costs ~?3,600. They already increase the fees by ?25-?50 every year and yet you never get anything more for your money :rolleyes:

They've already given universities the power to charge what they want - Not sure if it is in effect yet, but it definately is soon...

It sucks - Students get punished for the Government's inadequacies ;)

hellsatan - I know you dont know me, and I dont know how i found this thread, but I did and I just got a couple of things I want to mention regarding University College Northampton.

They must be the most unorganised organisation ive come across in a long time.

The facilities are quite shocking really.

They wont listen to anything you have to say.

In my final year - 2 of my 4 modules were taught by someone who spoke very poor english, and had only passed his degree himself the previous year. Do I need to tell you which module I scored poorly in? I was fortunate with the other one he was teaching as it was PHP, and it happened I knew a damn site more than he did. Despite complaining endlessly about being in my final year and being taught by someone with no experience, and who's engligh was very poor, nothing was ever changed and every person on my course suffered as a result of that.

When you finish the course, they send you a questionaire which is required by the government which questions basically what your upto now. In this questionaire is the question, Would you recommend the university to others. I'd have to answer No.
