View Full Version : Request: vBJournal System

I was wondering if the vBJournal System for 2.3 could be ported to 3. It's a very good hack.
yes, i agree, many of my members used this hack often, and it would be a great addition for vB3

if i remember correctly Anime-Loo said he was working on a vB3 version.

I can't give a release date yet, but I can tell you that my Journal system for vB3 is going to be "seriously b!tchin' !", and I've got a good chunk of work on it done and finalized currently. It's just that I'm doing 2 other major hacks first (Hack Tracking Log, a necessity for the Journal System, and the Modules Manager, an not-really-necessary-for-anything-but-my-god-will-it-save-you-a-lot-if-you-have-it :)) which really have a bit more priority.
I'll make some announcements / updates once more concrete details can be given about my new Journal system (based on my current one for vB2 that I never released, found here: http://kurafire.com/thecouch/journal.php ).
Oh, one detail I CAN give you:
my new Journal System will come with Importer scripts for the current vB2 Journal that's grown to be extremely popular. :)

Also to add to this, I've started work again on the vBJournalLite for vB2 which has basically turned into the vBJournalnotsoLite. For details, check the last of the posts in vBxB. I've posted a full rendition of the details there. While I'm not upgrading to vB3 just yet, I do plan on doing so in the coming months once the code for version 2 works. And with the rewrite working for vB2, I plan on releasing a version for vB3. All in all, it's much more configurable, it has amazing options, and it's looks are quite sleek and form fitting with your board. Looks as if it'll make a great tie in for the forum itself.
Look for the Nightingale Journal to pop up on vBulletin.org soon -- for those of you wanting a vb2 hack for the time being.

I look forward to it. It'd be great if you could make an importer that turns an existing thread into a journal, assigning all the posts of one member as entries and all the posts of other members as comments of the entries they proceed, but... I bet not too many people really want that. :)
As it is, I keep a forum for "journals" because I came directly from phpBB2 to vBulletin 3, and I haven't had a chance to install a stable journal. So I have a forum filled with threads of that nature.
Well good luck with it. It shall be smashing!

This wouldn't be that hard of a feature to implement at all with having the system read either threads or the journal sql itself.
However I haven't fooled with phpBB's journal hack or anything. I've seen it on the phpbbhacks site, but I haven't really seen the thing in action.. which is what I'd need to see to fully grasp the concept and the idea to tackle.
are there some features like private journal? membergroup privilage? storage? lenght of journal? etc.
Could you post the coming features here so some of us can suggest for more or comment on the current ones?

My journal will have, among a ton of other features:
various access levels for journals;
password-protected journals;
commenting permissions you can set;
various display methods;
admin settings to control journals in great detail;
most of all that was mentioned in the Syn-journal Development thread on vb.org :)
search for Syn-journal on vb.org to find out more.

Question, what exactly is the journalhack for?
KuraFire
01-07-2004, 12:55 PM
It adds Journals to your forum that your members can use.
Basically, it puts Livejournal (etc...) on your forum.

Will do - and not just because it's a grande system, but also cos I don't do "beta hacks" - I make sure my hacks work 100% fine in all aspects, before even bothering with a release (even just a private beta release).
I like vB3's quality, and cos of that I only want to make hacks that have the same quality as vB3 itself... takes time though :( (just like vB3 itself has taken way too much time for our tastes)

oh wow i would love for that kura, however i have a member wanting to kill me >.>
I already coded this to work for vb3, it just needs somone to fix the templates to work for vb3
if you would like a copy of this, and want to do some template recreation for vb3 just pop me a message on aim (zajako2) i cant release it though cause i would have to get permission first. I dont care for rights to the system i just want to use it, if you know what i mean >.>

Thanks, but that won't be necessary. I've made my Journal system from scratch and it'll take more time if I have to merge it with some other system, than to finish it 'from scratch' on my own. :)

Ditto, I did a similar method as well. That would be awesome.
Good luck with the hack, I'll definitely install it once released.

Oh dont get me wrong, i didnt ask you to stop working on it, or to help me, i just need something temporary till yours gets done, to make my members happy. Like i said its already done and is exactly like the old one, just needs the templates redone to use vbulletin 3 variables.
Seriously i look forward to yours much more than i do having the old one recreted, im not asking for you to merdge or anything, i just have some members that loved recording their journals and i dont want them to goto some other site with a journal cause my journal system is down >.>
My words "if you want a copy of this" i meant you as in anyone reading that post.
So kura keep up the good work you have some nice huge projects coming that i would like to see.

You can use the Journal for vB2 (perhaps on a temporary vB2 site) you know. My journal will come with Importers for the vB2 journal. :)

My journal will come with Importers for the vB2 journal.
When do you expect journal to be available (< 1 week / 1-2 weeks / 3-4 weeks / more)?
I'll probably update to VB3 and keep the VB2 site journal running meanwhile as you suggest, but this will be a pain if new members want to start journals of their own.

That's true, but there is no real alternative that lets you keep journals right now..
I dunno when I'll have the Journal System for vB3 done but I'm hoping to get it done in March (it's a lot of work, still)...
Yeah, seeing him pretty much swamp with his other hacks, I guess we have to be patient with this one, better to have it than nothing :).

3) Journal System

4) Reviews System
4) Ultimate Quotes Hack for vB3
6) Tutorials System
after that I don't know yet what'll come and in what order.. I have 14 major additions planned on top of these :D

Please remember to take your time, KuraFire. It is better to get it right than to have something messy that needs constant fixing.

Spence2 (and others) - what's the latest on journal software for VB? I'm currently running the everythingvb projects journal, but it is quite light on features. Anything else out there I should be looking at?
Spence2 - keep up the hassling! ;)
