I can see that is some kind of a hack that makes the URLs short, so search engines will spider.

Q1. Which hack is this?
Q2. Is this a good solution to get search engines to spider, or /archive/ type scripts better?

its the use of a mod_rewrite function ;D

either is fine, personally i just like how vb3 does it ;D
