Recenty we had been difficulty with our moderators overlooking and ignoring the sticky threads in our moderator forum, which resulted into a heated discussion between all the mods and admins. There were some unreasonable demands such as mass Email or mass PM notifications for all important announcements. But those can also be very easily overlooked.
After putting some thought into this I came up with the idea of active notification. This hack will allow you to call anyone's attention to a particular thread. The notified person will see a popup window that will position itself in the middle of their browser and it will maintain its position as the user scrolls up or down or surfs the board. And unless the user clicks on the link displayed in the popup window, it will not go away.
I have allowed for the hack to notify the following: admins, moderators and admins, moderators of a particular forum, or individual users. It also allows you to see the list of all people with pending notifications.
So far I have gotten positive responses from all the moderators who received notifications. It did freak some of them out. But they all unanymously liked it. :D
I have set up a demo for VB.org visitors. If you click on the following link, you will be taken to the main index page and will see the popup window. you can try and scroll up and down to see the box follow you. Note that since you are most likely a guest, the popup will not follow you if you decide to surf the board before clicking on the URL in the popup. And if you would like to see the box again, you must click on he following URL again. ;)
